This game... I just shed tears watching this. One of the best (and my first game) in my life! First time playing it as a kid, I got scared when the sea animals got sucked into the sky. And first time that I felt loneliness in a video game as I scramble deep into the undersea cave. For me, this is simply THE best game of my life. And salute to the guy who did this longplay! I'm glad you said this. I remember it as a fairly peaceful game, but I remember not getting very far. I put that down to me being a bit of a wuss. :-) I don't think the music helped...
Such an awesome game, one of my all time favourites. The atmosphere of mystery, the story. The music. The creepiness of the vortex queen chamber, and the fact that if you die there you have to redo the entire machine again. Such a hard game, but you are so compelled to keep trying. Fantastic game

This game was so special, i found it sooo hard when i was a kid. Haven't played it since, but it was one of those games that will have a lasting effect. Maybe because i never completed it. I'm only watching a few mins of this so remember it :P
The Dreamcast follow-up to this and Ecco II, Defender of the Future, was still just as tortuous, but in 3D! In fact, I'm still trying to finish it (taken five years on and off so far). It even has two awesome "hidden" side-on levels reminiscent of the Mega Drive games here :)
Ahhh sweet nostalgia! I've got it as my screensaver and some times fall asleep to it lol. I remember this game being really hard! Still haven't managed to complete it despite hours of gameplay. I mostly remember it having an incredible soundtrack (even though it was in MIDI) and although it was such a peaceful and relaxing game it also had an eerie/lonely feel to it. I finally completed this game two weeks ago or so. It was utter pain and punishment in the end. Let's just say that I could memorize the whole Machine now and I trained how to finish the last boss before actually going through both levels in a good manner. I may finally put my Megadrive to rest! Well there must be something really good in this game despite the difficulty that made me to finally finish this game. If it had been a tad easier it was easily the best game ever on Megadrive.
Oh, man! The music, the fact that the water gets darker the deeper you go, the puzzle element, the sense of urgency that having limited breath brings, the ATMOSPHERE! What a charming game! The one thing that's kind of weird is going back in time to get that globe for the Asterite... if you'd never gone back in time to steal it, it would have had it the whole time... the whole reason it's missing is because you stole it... weird. Why wasn't Ecco around when he went back to the time of the storm to get sucked up?

Developed by Appaloosa Interactive for Sega of America. This game SCREAMS Sega of America. The games they published always had a unique vibe that was quite different from the stuff Sega of Japan did. It's fun to compare the two and see the different approaches and philosophies in game design, from the gameplay to the graphics and sound. I will say this, though: Japanese developers generally had a better grasp on the Genesis/Mega Drive soundchip's capabilities than Western developers of the time. There are, of course, exceptions, but those abrasive sounds that quite a lot of Mega Drive and Genesis games are known for, and that are also present in Ecco here and there, are much more rare in Japanese developed releases. I think Ecco is a really interesting and unique game series. Creeped me out when I was a kid though.
god damn this game was hard, i swear me and my friends played it for an hour straight just talking to dolphins and we were completely stumped. such a hard game, ninja gaiden has nothing on this game.

My talking dolphin spoke to me
He spoke to me in symphony
From freedom's peace beneath the sea
He looked to me eyes full of love
Said yes we live behind the sun
Behind the sun
The sun goes up
And the sun gets down
But like the heart of the sun
My heart continues to pound
Behind the sun
Now while I shower in the rain
I watch my dolphin swim away
The one who listens to the surf
Can feel the pulse beat of the earth
And like my dolphin swims so free
The sun does swim into the sea
Behind the sun
An island flying through the sky
One day your son might ask you why
And if your son should be a girl
She too might ask you of this world
The sun shines sweet upon your beach
And yes my dolphin loves to teach
Behind the sun
The sun goes up
And the sun gets down
But like the heart of the sun
My heart continues to pound

There are, of course, exceptions, but those abrasive sounds that quite a lot of Mega Drive and Genesis games are known for, and that are also present in Ecco here and there, are much more rare in Japanese developed releases. I think Ecco is a really interesting and unique game series. Creeped me out when I was a kid though.
I always thought that Ecco made more sense on the Game Gear. It's like sudoku, it seems weird on a TV in your living room.
O.M.G. i totally remember this from when I was younger:O
god damn this game was hard, i swear me and my friends played it for an hour straight just talking to dolphins and we were completely stumped. such a hard game, ninja gaiden has nothing on this game.
Happy anniversary to this aquatic game🎉
This game used to scare the shit out of me when I was playing it as a kid. I’m looking now like “what the fuck was wrong with me?” Cryptic ass in-game messages. This game was hella dope though.
Welcome TO THE MACHINE aka the wtf scrolling level
lol, I love this game. It was really hard, especially the last few levels, which I cannot beat without cheating! Undercaves (level 3) is tough, but passable - it took me a long time to figure out how to get through it without suffocating!
Watching that just brings back a lot of fun memories
ahhh the game that scared the crap out of me as a child
One of my favourites games on the MD, if not for The tides of time.
