  • Now I Belong to Jesus.
    1938
A huge photograph appeared in the New York Times on October 1, 1944, showing Madison Square Garden the previous evening packed with twenty thousand young people, including soldiers and sailors just back from World War II. It was a Youth for Christ Victory Rally. The meeting was scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., but by midafternoon the lobby was already packed with hymn-singing crowds. Following an exuberant song service that night, Jack Wyrtzen, director of Word of Life, gave an evangelistic message. When he asked those who wanted to receive Christ to stand, hundreds of people rose to their feet, including many men and women in uniform. Right in the middle of it all, working alongside Jack Wyrtzen, was Norman J. Clayton, author of “Now I Belong to Jesus.” Clayton was a Brooklyn boy, born January 1903, the ninth of ten children. His mother, a devout member of the Church of England, had helped establish South Brooklyn Gospel Church, and there she attended regularly with her children. Norman was saved at the church at the age of six, and by age twelve he was playing the pump organ (and later the trumpet) for his church-a role he occupied for fifty years. Though initially a builder by profession, Norman’s real passion was Scripture memory, evangelism, and the ministry of music. In 1942, he joined the staff of Jack Wyrtzen’s ministries and helped coordinate the New York City rallies for Word of Life, such as the one profiled in the New York Times. For fifteen years, he played the organ and vibraharp at these meetings and directed the work of the inquiry room and the follow-up teams. He also worked with Word of Life’s radio broadcasts, as well as the “Sunday Morning Radio Bible Class” of the Bellerose Baptist Church. Throughout the 1940s and ’50s, Clayton published some thirty Gospel songbooks, and he became a writer and editor for the Rodeheaver Company. He remained active in the Lord’s work until his death in 1992. He’s also the author of the hymn “My Hope Is in the Lord.” “Now I Belong to Jesus” is one of those hymns that provides endless comfort for today . . . “not for the years of time alone, but for eternity.”

God stuck this song in my head first thing this morning. I had to find a good rendition to sing along with in my heart. Found this one and was blessed by your God given gifts. Thank you for using them for the Body as Romans 12 states. To God be the glory!!

Same thing happened to me, this very morning! After searching youtube for the 'right' sound (that would resonate in my heart), this was the one - thank You, Jesus! Played it more than once! And what a beautiful story behind this song!!

Today's "praise teams" give us warm dog turds when compared to real hymns like this. The song's writer would be overwhelmed to hear their song so beautifically done.
