Always nice to watch you videos, great job. As some kind of follow up question. Do you have any routine with the first film you use with a new camera? Do you bracket some shots? Thanks for sharing you experience.

Thank you! Great question. I often play a lot with the cameras I use for the first time without film in it, which helps me get a sense of the settings and functionality. Yes, when shooting with manual cameras, I do bracket some shots especially when shooting without a light meter. However, I dont do this too often as I am not very fond of wasting film. Thanks for asking!

I recently bought a Nikon F2 (made in 1976 according to the serial number). I've cleaned it and replaced the light-seals and the mirror "bumper" but so far I haven't attempted to lubricate it. Any hints / tips for doing this?

Nice! I am not very experienced with lubricating film cameras, but there are a few tutorials on youtube for that. Good luck!

Looks good. Pentax Program Plus is one of the few I have never used. I know people love them. I may have to pick one up. The f/2 lens is a great lens. Enjoy!

Regarding fungus, electronic cameras are hard to take apart and clean. Mechanical cameras, less so. Spotmatics are like Model T's and can be easy to take apart, clean and fix. Takumars can be relatively easy to take the elements out and clean. Tak 50mm being among the easiest. Russian range finders and lenses are fairly easy too.

Hey first of all, thank you for the great video! So i recently got a couple of cameras from my grandfather that he bought back when he was a young boy. 2 of them are from Zeiss (and the one that is most dirty is called "contaflex") and since they have been laying arond for a couple of decades they have collected a lot of dust and there is even some fungus in certain areas (I'm not sure but I think this greenish stuff is called that way). I actually have little to no experience with cleaning and taking care of old film cameras and so I'm a bit uncertain what to do first to get the cameras clean again. Would you suggest going to a professional that is able to take care of it properly or should I just try it myself? (of course I won't touch anything of the insides)
    Again thanks for the video
    Greetings from Germany

Lucky you, Zeiss cameras are great. They have coveted lenses. The green stuff could just be grime or oxidation of the metal. Some metals turn green when they oxidize and it's not really a deal breaker on the body. There are products you can use to remove that, just research what is available in your area. For the body, use microfibre cloth and q-tips ( for the hard to reach areas) with your product plus disinfectant spray. Spray onto the cloth then apply, don't spray directly on the camera. You can gently clean the insides ad well, just avoid the shutter mechanism. What is the condition of the lens? Is it clear, hazy, or does it have white spots in it?

@@retrotechmall Yeah, I've looked at it again and the metal oxidated especially around the view finder. I'm not exactly sure about the condition of the lense. So it kind of seems clear in the middle but there is defenitely some dust and particles on top of the glass that sits behind the first glass (?). The outer part of the second glass is defenitly hazy, this might be due to the conditions my grandfather stored this camera in. Added to that unfortunately there is some rust on the metal located at the bottom of the camera. But the actual mechanism (the wheels on top, the wheels to adjust everything in the front and all the things that happen on the inside seem pretty intact and not effected. The view finder is pretty ok as well, I think with a bit of cleaning I will easily get rid of all the dust.

@@godsavethememes4973 Great. Since the camera got into contact with some moisture, it is very likely that there is some fungus and haze in the lens. There may be a way to take the lens apart and clean it nicely. A few videos on TH-cam cover that. Caution, only do that if your a very comfortable with the process. Good luck!

I just bought a 35mm SLR for the first time and when I look in the viewfinder it looks a bit gray ish/ dusty on the edges. I’ve cleaned it with lens wipes I’ve bought at CVS, just the lens and the viewfinder but it didn’t do much. Does that mean the inside or outside is dirty ? I don’t want to touch it too much and scratch or ruin it.

    • @retrotechmall

I cannot be 100% sure, not haven seen your camera, but this may indicate an old or ongoing fungus problem on the inside of the lens assembly for the viewfinder. My suggestion would be to look up viewfinder disassembly instruction for your camera and try to take it apart, then clean and reassemble. Be careful to take photos at each step along the way on your phone, to help you as you reassemble.
