I remember watching the "trailer" for this movie in theaters. Disney just did a quick "coming from Disney" card and then the "trailer" was the opening of the movie. The entire Circle of Life thing. We're just sitting in the theater with our jaws dropping and watching the gorgeous animation. No additional explanation, no voice over to explain any of what we're watching, just that whole stunning opening number. Most effective movie trailer EVER.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight- The original song title was "Mbube" (the Zulu word for "lion") and was written and first recorded in 1939 by Solomon Linda, a South African Zulu singer. In 1961, a version adapted into English with the title "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by the doo-wop group The Tokens became a number-one hit in the United States. It earned millions in royalties from cover versions and film licensing

It doesn't matter how many times I've seen this movie, the scene where Simba finds Mufasa dead in the gorge always gets me in the heart. Especially the fact that Scar gaslights Simba into thinking it was his (Simba's) fault and Johnathan Taylor Thomas' line delivery.
Also, I am very glad they cast James Earl Jones as Mufasa. As much as I respect the actor, they almost cast Christopher Walken.
Side note: Some of the character's names have meanings translated out of Swahili
    Simba: Lion
    Nala: Gift
    Mufasa: King
    Sarabi: Mirage
    Rafiki: Friend
    Pumbaa: Slow-Witted
    Zazu: Movement
    Shenzi: Savage
    Banzai: Skulk or lurk

Timon (His name actually comes from Greek): Respect or Honor

The voices in this film are incredible; starting with Mufasa (James Earl Jones who R.I.P, also was the voice of Darth Vader among another epic roles), and Scar (Jeremy Irons).

I always wondered too why Mufasa never told Simba the truth, but I understand now.
Mufasa died, Scar made his choice, and there was no going back. If Mufasa had told Simba the truth, he would've rushed there with anger and hatred in his heart. Killing Scar would not bring Mufasa back, but it would change Simba. Despite everything, Simba gave Scar exile, and he squandered it.
Besides, Mufasa knew his time would come one day but never imagined that Scar would betray him.

I probably keep repeating myself forever. A kid's movie from the 80's.
A few easter eggs in other movies and shows related to this one. In 'Coming to America' (1988) James Earl Jones wears a lion skin in a scene. Though you should watch 'Trading Places' (1983) first to get another easter egg in 'Coming to America'. Also, Scar's skin is in an episode of the 'Hercules' animated series.
Edit: Favourite Disney movie? 'Robin Hood' (1973) of course. The one the traumatized me was 'The Fox and the Hound' (1981). In the past every generation had a Disney movie that traumatized us a little. And I believe that was a good thing.

Timon is a meerkat, and Pumba is a warthog :)
Earlier concept designs had them looking more realistic, with Timon having a long pointed snout and Pumba being beige-ish gray in colour, but the final designs were done more cartoonified

The Lion King was a core childhood memory for every kid in my generation. For a lot of us, it was our first realization that one day our parents would die, and that there isn't anything you can do to stop it - and more importantly that it's not your fault. It taught us that life goes on, and that sometimes a change of environment can be what we need to become who we're meant to be.

I've always loved Simba - the cuttest Disney character ever. 🐾 Also, The Lion King platformer for SNES and Sega MegaDrive is my all-time favourite game. On the other hand, I've heard The Lion King potrayed hyenas wrong and that's why real hyenas are so mistreated. I don't know what to do. The Lion King made me fascinanated in lions and wildlife in general, therefore it's so heartbreaking to know the same movie made people mistreat hyenas. :(

    • @joehoy9242
      @joehoy9242 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Absolutely - however it's worth mentioning that when recording "Be Prepared", Jeremy Irons put so much force into the line "YOU WON'T GET A SNIFF WITHOUT ME!" that he actually blew his voice out. The last chorus and coda of the song was apparently performed by Jim Cummings, who does such a good job that the end result is practically seamless.

13:33 Somewhere aroung here there is the funniest part to me, nobody else talks about. When Simba says 'I'll go with you' and Scar says 'No', Simba moves his paws in a comic way. You have to play this part in slow motion to notice how hillarious Simba's paws movement is. It looks just like Simba got scared of a mouse and quickly trying to protect his paws from a mouse' bite. xD

I saw this movie 5 times when it first came out and again during a re-release (6 total). Once it came out on video, I watched it enough times to where I could practically recite it.
On a side note, you mentioned how this movie was based on Hamlet, the original ending would have had Scar throwing Simba off the top of Pride Rock but the flames would have then risen high enough to consume him as well. This would have played into the Hamlet ending where just about all the main characters are dead, but fortunately Disney decided to go with a happier ending

Honestly this and Aladdin were my two favorite Disney movies growing up. Saw them both in theaters when they came out.
They don't make movies like this anymore. The live action remakes (even though they're not live action, they're fully CGI) just dont cut it. Because they went with the look of the animals trying to be as realistic as possible, they dont have the emotional reaction in the face. Like cats especially don't show much emotion on their faces so like you dont get those exaggerated expressions like you do with either traditional cartoons or even exaggerated-realism.
