There are four surviving FPA-4s in Ohio on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. 6771 and 6777 wear the cvsr livery, 6780 masquerades as B&O 800, and 6767 is awaiting restoration currently. All were built by MLW and served with VIA
actually it is and it is rusting in it's cn paint scheme.I and friends with the crews and i asked and they said the railroad it was being restored i think went bankrupt and they will restore it sometime late this year or early next year
@@ArturoRailProductions CVSR is a tax-exempt non-profit, and does OK financially. My understanding is that 6767 is/was mainly a parts donor for the other three operational ones.
The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad will soon be the largest operator of the type. Their current fleet is comprised of 6771, 6777, and 6780. All three are in operational condition with 6780 experiencing some downtime recently. They had another FPA-4, 6767, but that unit has been gutted after serving as a parts source to keep her sister units running. Her cab was recently donated to restore an ALCO PA. The CVSR will be acquiring the Grand Canyon Railroad’s FPA-4s and FPB-4s sometime in near the future
That's really awesome to hear! The FPA4 wasn't preserved very well, only some surviving examples remain! So to hear a railway is actively trying to restore and get more is awesome to hear!
Actually, one is in the livery, she is located at the DL South side yard in Scranton, she serves as a both a parts for a certain block, and a possible OCS unit.
Nice memories brought back.. Thank you/Merci! I remember I was just a tot when my (deceased now) dad used to take me to the Sainte-Foy station in the late 60s, waiting for the Montréal-Québec City train to arrive and pull in about 8:00 ish p.m..That was before the advent of Via Rail neddless to say. It was the CN passenger service. Later on about 1976 through 1985, they rerouted the train to get to downtown main station,:la gare du Palais. I also fremeber a day and age when we would go to Chicoutimi and there was the Montréal-Chicoutimi and Montréal/Québec City trains running through the city and honking their horns non-stop.all tracks in Chicoutimi have been removed for a bike path. The same for the line in Q.C. en route for Chicoutimi. So many alines were canceled and terminated too from Q.C. to different and diverse destinations within the province or outside.Too bad..I also remeber when the first Bombardier LRC train and engine came out, they put it on display near Q.C. Palais station. That was the ultimate technology at the time.We were looking forward to take or see it on tracks and in operation. Tyhe tracks were removed since then where it was showcased and on display. I've actually always wondered why they didn't keep them any longer than that as a matter of fact.
The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad in northeast Ohio (my backyard) owns four of them. 6771, 6777 are their most popularly ran and the other two, one is a parts engine and I believe the other has been converted into a head end power unit.
FPA-4s were not built from 1950, only in 1958-59 and never used for freight. CN and CP used FA-1s(built '49-'50, with 1500hp 244s) and FA-2s (built '51-'53 with 1600 hp 244) for that purpose. LRCs had 251 prime movers, the 251F.
Great video, glad to find this ! There's an incorrect reference to top speed in there somewhere. Actually, top speed was 92 MPH (stenciled on the roof above the engineer control stand) for the FP4's and 89 MPH for the FP9's. 6765 is currently restored and repainted at ExpoRail in Montreal. There are 4 others in operational service pulling the Napa Valley Wine trains. Pics available upon request!
MLW FPA-4’s were geared for 95Mph (153Kph) but since there was not a RSC (Reset Saftey Control) or an Event Recorder system in them they would not “overspeed”…. So that being said…. If the crews let them go 105Mph ( 169Kph) was not heard of …..
Benthetrainkid, not to mention the other two FPA-4 and FB-1’s are also Ex-VIA, the Napa Valley Wine owns four FPA-4’s and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway has four FPA-4’s of which three are operational.
I do remember, though it was a while ago! VIA was using the blue & yellow paint as early as 1976 on passenger equipment. On locomotives, the red CN nose logo was first applied to blue & yellow VIA 6516 in June, 1976. The red VIA nose logo was first applied in mid-1978.
As Eric said the VIA logo and colors first appeared in mid 1976 on some CN passenger equipment. CN had set up it's passenger rail service under a new division called VIA-CN. CN's turbo trains were the first to get the yellow & blue VIA-CN colors and logo. By the fall of 1976 VIA-CN and CP Rail issued a joint passenger timetable under the VIA name. By 1977 the government set up VIA Rail to be a jointly operated company run between CN & CP however their was conflict between the management of both railways and eventually by 1978 VIA was set up as a separate government owned crown corporation independent of CN & CP. CN had their trains taken over first in 1977 and CP's went under VIA in the fall of 1978.

They are amazing ALCO built locomotives. And are also beautiful.
Not Built by Alco, built by MLW....
Multiple FPA4s are around; not just the 6789.
nice

Some of the FPA4s exist on a short line in cuyahoga falls Ohio it’s called CVNP if you want to check it out

Wat horn(s) did the MLW/ALCO FPA4s get?
There is an via alco FPA4 in scranton Pennsylvania USA
4 of these engines can be found to today on the chahoga valley national park
There are some on the Grand Canyon railroad
Love the Blue yellow Lagoon scheme...wish they would bring back these colour schemes..
Really Cool video. I'd really like to learn more about via rail and their operations. One thing you forgot was saying what horn they were given.
105 KPH, hmmm seems a tad slow to me. I have paced them along the 401 back in the old days and they were going more than that. 105 MPH maybe?
Its awsome to see that the canadian uses the same consist but has f40ph-2
If I'm correct this is an old FPA4 stored at the DLW Shops th-cam.com/video/-CCpCGLBGcA/w-d-xo.html the FPA4 is at 0:54
Rex_ The_Railfanner that is an FPA4. Piece of history right there.
Have you ever noticed that early 70s to early 90s Canadian and American locos were really smoky? Oh, and super dirty also
Not only F7,But also E8 and E9

Nice video👌.. Keep up the nice work
The FPA-4's also ran on the Ocean not just the corridor.
They were also used on the Super on occasion
fact: on April 1 1989 All VIA FPA4's Were Banned From Leading Trains Due to Their their lack of Reset Safety Controls

What!
What's the music used in the video?
All VIA Canada Trains are the best
Fpa4’s topped out at 92 mph. 145-150 kph.
