Ben was ridiculously energetic and absolutely nuts during this number. At my show Michael was playing Connor and he was also hysterical. Those three worked to well together. However I will never forgive Will Roland for saying “hot” instead of “kinky” at my show.

everyone is saying that the only person that put any effort into it is Will so i have a few points to make:
1. you're opinion is most likely extremely biased because he's a member of the original broadway cast
2. you aren't accepting the fact that Mike and Ben have moved on to other things, so you're shitting on the INCREDIBLE Alex and Michael just because they weren't obc members
3. Will has the least amount of lines/the shortest lines in the whole song, and most of them are just funny quips for comedy relief. he's putting in little dance moves along to the music to make up for the fact that he doesn't have a huge singing part so that people don't brush him off as a side character.
4. these people put on the same show 8 times a week so you can't blame them for not wanting to do the fully choreographed dance for it.
5. the vocals were so amazing, so please don't tell me Alex and Michael weren't putting in enough effort.

Y'all need to chill. Most of you guys are blatantly hating on this.
1 - Will has worked on DEH for nearly four years. Michael and Alex are new to the production (Michael having about half a year in and Alex having a few months). Obviously Will would be more "into" it.
2 - They're in a literal alley. At 11 AM, after performing an emotionally draining show 8 times a week. Alex literally has to play a charachter that kills himself 8 times a week.
3 - Alex was technically on vocal rest here. Go watch his Spring Awakening videos before judging his singing. Michael also has an EP out, listen to that.
4 - They we're in charachter. Will's playing a somewhat upbeat charachter, Michael is playing a more secluded charcter, and Alex is potraying a dark charachter.
5 - Ben and Mike aren't the only good actors in existance.

Another point I wanna make on 4.
Conner is d34d, and this song was basically Evan and Jared “rewriting” Connor’s life to make Evan look good, and considering the fact that neither Evan nor Jared knew much- if not- anything about the real Connor, I kind of find the somewhat…monotone(?) voice Alex uses to play Connor in this performance to actually be a pretty nifty detail since the version of Connor that Evan and Jared are portraying here is basically their…puppet on strings, if you will.

I know I’m a year late but it really annoys me seeing all the hate towards Michael and Alex in these comments. They were told not to do choreography because the stage was too small, even though Alex couldn’t help himself at times 😂. Alex was technically on vocal rest during this performance also which is why he doesn’t sound as amazing as usual, even though i still think he sounds incredible here. Y’all need to get over Ben and Mike, people move on in their lives and it’s not fair to keep comparing people to them

One thing I always loved when Ben was playing Evan, that whenever and where ever he performed, as soon as the music started he was 100% in character. I know they probably agreed beforehand they wouldn't do the choreography and all that, but it still feels like a bit of a disservice to the audience, that they (at least the two that aren't Will Roland) are putting zero effort into it and just making it a really casual, fun and relaxed performance. There might be plenty of the people in the audience who hear this song for the first time and they deserve better - so does the show that they could be advertising here, in which I'm sure they also put in all the effort.

They were actually asked not to do the choreography, as they could have fallen off of the small stage, injured themselves (which I doubt they could have but still) doing the choreography if they were too hyped up by this style of audience, tripped over chords on the stage, or dropped the microphones which would cost hundreds of dollars to replace and ruin the rest of the show if they were a mic down

The lack of dance moves was not the point of my comment, it was the lack of emotion and engagement, for which you don't have to hop around or follow any dance moves.

I saw MIchael Lee Brown and Alex on a Saturday matinee three weeks ago. They were fantastic. And so was Laura Brescia and Mallory Bechtel. The rest of the cast was outstanding. This show deserves to live on a good long while and the current cast does the show proud. It really is a masterpiece.

I love Alex and his voice, but I don’t know why he isn’t getting into it? I’m usually not Original Cast-oriented, but I do prefer Mike’s hyper tone during this song.
I do, however, prefer Alex’s voice. Everyone seems low-energy in this song except for Will. Although, I am certain this is not the usual tone from Michael. He’s usually into it.
The Council of Doom they were asked not to do the choreography on that stage as there were chords running up to the instruments and there was a risk of them dropping their mics if they went full out. Also if you saw his Instagram story from that day, you would have seen that he was meant to be on vocal rest and explained he didn't want to damage his voice for the show

Tbh, performing outside in a live venue compared to a rehearsal room or indoor theater is waaay different. Will has performed at Stars in the Alley before in the same role, so he has an idea of what it's like (he also has less to sing and more chances to have a lot of fun). They sounded great and I bet they sound even better on stage.
