It works only for clockwise vertices. If you swap b with c. The area will be minus.

in polish school we have 1/2 * | (Xb - Xa) (Yc - Ya) - (Yb - Ya) (Xc - Xa) | so basically a,b,c the same of 1,2,3 and if you write the same numbers with good place the answer will be the same :DD
This tricks not work in exam instead use easy formula 👉 1/2(x1y2+x2y3+x3y1) - (x2y1+x3y2+x1y3) just you has to take vertices as (x1,y1) (x2,y2) (x3,y3) its that easy try questions with this formula 👈

Please help. i have a triangle with the coordinates: Q(0,17) P(4,1) O(0,0). Everytime i do this method, i always end up with -34 as the area. But my answer booklet says the answer is 34. I have tried this with different coordinates as x1 in different orders. but i am still wrong. Is if somthing to do with one of the coordinates being the origin?

what is my determinant is negative? do i just write it as positive in the answer because area cannot be negative?
Dear Mafizur, even if the value turns out to be negative, just make it positive (take absolute value) as you rightly mentioned that the area can't be negative!

Alternatively, use homogeneous coordinates and compute a 3x3 determinant. If there are convenient zeros among the points’ coordinates this could be less work.
