there is a gem pack deal in the Alliance Carnival you should use to stock up on gems. But you need to still have your 10 double downs. Its a $9.99 pack. it has 25 of the 5k bundles. Used with the 10 double downs you will end up with 500 of the 5k bundles...2.5m gems. I did this once before and used the gems to do all 6 parts of my wall general gear. This even i am going to use the gems to get my first sub to gold level. K45 did not drop the last time i used this pack + double drop. Now i need my first sub to gold quality then i will go back to doing refines.
There's one caveat to what you said. Once advanced refining is unlocked it stays unlocked even if you change refinements. So in my opinion it's a good strategy to get 3 gold attributes that you want and then take anything for the 4th to unlock advanced refining and once it's unlocked re refine to get the right thing
