Hi Tim! It would be very interesting to compare the GP27Q with the KTC M27T20, them being the exact same monitor but differing in the panel type (IPS for the CM, HVA for the KTC). I've read that FALD with VA is a much better combo than with IPS. Also, the GP27U and KTC M27P20 Pro are literally the same monitor with same panel it would seem, so I think it would also be interesting to compare and see how each others tuning makes a difference. Sadly, it seems KTC is lagging behind on firmware updates, as they haven't addressed the initial issues with these monitors, but have offered the update this month (March 2023).
I'm not convinced this monitor has even been released in Europe. It's not listed on most sites, and never been in stock on the two I've seen it on, making me wonder if it ever was or is just a placeholder listing.
Others have noted that the GP27Q firmware is up to version 1.2.1. It would really be nice to find out if the worst problems are fixed. I don't know of other mini-LED QD 1440P 27" monitors. If its firmware was good, I'd probably own one by now. Any chance, Tim?
@@EvanXDev i'm thinking about this monitor as well, but I'm afraid of the blooming, ips glow and backlight bleed. With a OLED I'm atleast certain those 3 issues won't exist
Blooming is a non issue when gaming. Only one game I could noticeably see it was MS FS 2020 at night. Even then going down to local dimming low or medium basically solves it. No back-light bleed either.
Appreciate the update on this. I'm still interested in the GP27u, but thats mainly due to companies still not releasing products they announced at last CES. Guess there is no point in waiting for the release of products from the upcoming CES either.
Just returned my GP27U. Not enough dimming zones and blooming was very trippy and noticeable on my unit. I have just ordered the REDMAGIC 4K Gaming Monitor, which appears to be specced identically except it has 1,152 dimming zones (twice as many as the Coolermaster) but I don't think it has quantum dot. Thank you Tim for providing an update and speaking on the flicker situation. Flicker is a major concern for me. I wonder if there’s any chance CM can decrease or remove the flicker with firmware on this hardware.
Thanks for the followup, I really appreciate your work. By chance has the KTC variant, the KTC M27T20 and M27P20 Pro, come across your radar? Apparently KTC is the panel manufacturer for the GP27U and GP27Q so it should have similar performance, and hopefully a better firmware.
Hey Tim. I'm really interested what local dimming in SDR looks like with these mini-led FALD displays. It would be awesome, if you could implement this sort of testing in your upcoming monitor reviews/comparisons. Thanks :)
In this case, it's not great. The gamma goes pretty far out of whack, making mid-tones lose a lot of detail. In my experience, FALD on with contrast taken way down looks OK-ish, but not quite right. SDR content in Windows' HDR mode looks closer to right. Cooler Master does say they're working on improving that in future firmware updates, though.
Yep, still the best all rounder HDR monitor out there. It's just that I don't want to be a test subject for firmware issues, I'd like to know how things are nowadays...
@@JoeMaranophotography fair enough hahaha... I had to send back a Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 34... No warranty for burn ins, and no freedom to configure long nor short pixel refresh/compensation cycles. Had to taste it to realize it was a scam.

I experienced flickering with VRR on the 27U in games with bright skies like Kingdom Come (80fps, Skyrim and Death Stranding with or without HDR. In darker scenes I could not notice it. Really a shame as I really like a lot of aspects of this monitor.
Seems like they uploaded new firmware versions. For GP27U, it is currently version 1.3.1. For GP27Q, it is currently version 1.2.1. BTW, seems like the company making those monitors is in fact KTC. They have released nearly identical monitors.
I personally don't use VRR for the variable in the moment purposes, but rather to lock my display to a random refresh-rate for locked content. I may not be able to play a game at 120 fps at all the bells and whistles, but maybe I can at 95, so I lock the game to 95 for that synced goodness. I'm assuming in my use case, I wouldn't see that flickering, right?
@@Berserkism Someone in the comments reported seeing flickering with the GP27U in 3 games specifically when looking at bright areas such as the sky so it's not like Tim is just making it up. Tim also said you may or may not have the issue but as a good reviewer he has to be honest and cannot tell you that you won't have the issue in games for sure because even he noticed a little bit in games not only in stress testing but he also said it wasn't major flickering in the games he saw it in.
Been waiting for this! Thanks. The GP27U is the one I've been looking at for months as a work/gaming monitor due to the color accuracy and high refresh. Happy to see input lag has decreased a lot in SDR mode which will be great for competitive games (not concerned with gaming in HDR, it's cool to try but not a major thing to me). Cooler Master should fix those issues with the GP27Q soon as well for people who have or are looking to get that monitor. Good on them for at least being honest on issues they had and delivering on their promise for a November firmware update.
Thanks for this been waiting for this to land, your vids are great. I’m torn between the CM27U and Neo G7… both are in my price range and I have seen the Neo G7 below £1k GBP but torn as to what to get as the CM is still an attractive price V features now with firmware update… any thoughts? A comparison video of both would be good 👀😂👌🏻
Appreciate the video. I’m all in on the gp27q now that they’ve fixed the vrr/hdr issue. Flickering in a stress test is a non issue for me (and I suspect most people) and the other issues mentioned are minor (imho) and are sure to be patched in an update. Shame they are sold out for now
flickering is not just in stress test, just only noticeable in stress tests, a complete deal breaker as anything less than flicker-free for long term usage will tire your eyes and increase vision loss.
@@Jack-he8jv never had a problem with ‘tired eyes’ and give me a break with the vision loss claim. If it’s not noticable then it’s as good as being not there to me
VRR via Gsync (haven't tested AMD/Intel) is still broken. Applications like Photoshop or Slack will crash the display output and disconnect the KVM. The KVM on the GP27U is borderline usable, if at all. Whenever the monitor has to adjust to a change in the input signal (screen blanks black for a significant amount of time), the KVM is disconnected from the upstream computer. It sometimes even takes long enough for games to open on the secondary display instead of on the GP27U.
I got the GP27U. I’ve had my frustrations with this, and I think most of them will be ironed out with updates. I don’t use this for PC use, as I only game on my Series X. I will say the panel looks incredible, and the blacks are nearly/on par as good as my Lg OLED.
I really hope the USB hub sleep problem will be fixed, and the black screen on wake. The USB KVM hub powering down is one of the most annoying issues, especially since it means I have to unplug my mouse to wake my desktop…
I wonder if these issues you describe Tim are resolved in the GP27Q as the firmware-version is at 1.4.1 as of now. It's on sale at quite an attractive price and if the issues are resolved it's hard to pass on...
I want to add to the review of this monitor. I tried to setup triple 4k setup, however, only 2 monitors at a time were able to be connected while the 3rd monitor remained off. I checked around forums and found out the display port DSC function did not work properly. So, the monitor can only be used for single display or dual display mode. It is a very pretty monitor, but, the blooming artifacts really hurt my eyes. I tried to adjust settings, but, this was hard to do. I would suggest waiting for another year to see what happens in the OLED market, wait until prices come down , or wait to see if these mini-LED panels improve in their ability to be connected in a myriad of configurations. I did get the gigabyte m28u instead and although it has a softer showing in picture quality, it s 85-90% of the quality of the gp27u at nearly half the price. For this channel, a tutorial on how to tell if monitors can be made in triple monitor setups would be great. More importantly n how to spot these issues ahead of time before buying so we can also save our time, too. Overall, thisis the best channel for monitor reviews.
Bought the 27Q for myself for Christmas. While not on the newest firmware it was capable of HDR and Adaptive out of the box think it was ahead of the software in this video. Haven't noticed Flickering but I'm not a pro. Things unreal imo!
@@amirmohammad527 I am really satisfied, I have noticed the flickering now. That's mostly because I keep windows in HDR permanently, which means I have the backlights on causing the flicker. I'm lazy and like the not overly saturated colour vibe. The colours and HDR content are gorgeous but my only influence of OLED is my phone. Along with that the contrast and blacks are amazing too. If you have no context next to it to compare, the blacks are black black. I don't notice bleeding unless I'm past 140ish + degrees. I wear glasses and lights always twinkle and look funky so your mileage may vary on that. It's good yeah alright 😎
I'm not sure where Hardware Unboxed got their results from, or how they measured HDR and SDR input lag. The monitor's total input lag in both SDR and HDR with Local Dimming is around 2.5 to 3ms, with a grand total input delay of up to 8.8ms at 60Hz.
I'm loving my GP27Q though, it's a far better monitor from my Asus PG278QR, sure it's not perfect but for £500 and for what it offers it's amazing. HDR peak brightness is blinding, at the FPS2 mode its really blinding, I haven't noticed any flickering issues so far, and to be fair I haven't really tested HDR, apart from one video on youtube. Overall I'm well satisfied Mini Led IPS, also noticed a significant improvement on input lag, my accuracy on the likes of Call of Duty is far better now, I'm less likely to see the kill cam when I die and find out a completely different thing than I saw on my screen. I just would like to get an ICC profile to better calibrate the colours as I don't have the equipment or the patience to do it or even the knowhow. Thank you for your input Tim, really appreciate the work you guys do.

This is an incredible monitor for the price, super deep blacks, amazing colors, decent HDR. The only issue i've had is really that is goes to black after switching to or from HDR, the only solution is to turn on/off the monitor. Hey Tim, it looks like that your sample (GP27U) works better than my one. After the latest FW Update the gamut was clamped correctly in sRGB or P3 mode but the WP is all over the place. Meaning the calibration is gone! The GP27Q has the same issue: all color space presets are broken. So after I checked this I stopped testing because with the broken factory calibration one of the key selling factors are gone. However, thanks for your revised to these monitors!
I'm looking forward to this, as I'm fed up with having to tiptoe around the fragile little flower that is a desktop OLED. By now, it seems like most of the firmware issues have been addressed.
Not really, the firmware is still so so broken it is not even fun no more. I can't install the latest firmware on my Q model the 1.4.1. If i use that firmware i end up on a death loop when i turn on my screen, only thing i see is a never ending CoolerMaster logo and nothing more. The monitor is getting no signal from the DP or HDMI, only solution is to unplug all cables and turn off the monitor, then plug it back in and turn it back on. The moment i restart my pc it is game over, you can start over. If the monitor turns to sleep it is over. I'm using 1.2.1 again, most stable for me. And guess what? No support from Coolermaster just dead silence nothing more from them.
I've got the Q model too now and it comes with 1.21 out of the box. Was one step away from installing the latest, then read a few reddit posts claiming that some of the settings get locked in hdr mode after the update (1.41). Kept the factory firmware and going by what you're saying - not even considering trying to update. Seems like CM software for these is a total crapshoot. Quite satisfied with the screen otherwise though.
@@edwards409 Agreed, the monitor is amazing but i got a love/hate relation with the Q cause of the firmware. The black screens is what's bugging me in HDR gaming. CTRL SHIFT WINDOWS B is my best friend on this monitor. And when that fails only option is to turn off/on the monitor to get the picture back up. Lots of people complaining about this on Reddit. I did provided CM lots of information with pictures and what is going on with the latest update. It is a shame how CM is giving us the silent treatment. I bet you they are ignoring us until there is no more support on this monitor.
Haven’t gotten around to updating my U yet but I’m glad to hear they’ve followed through with the HDR+VFR issue. It doesn’t really affect me as I’m fine with 120 or even 60Hz, but I’m personally more happy to see they’re addressing colour accuracy, that was the part I was kinda more concerned about as someone who’s gonna be video editing on this. Me personally, this (the GP27U) is exactly what I was looking for.
Does local dimming work in SDR now? This monitors ticks all the boxes for me and my budget. It's just the local dimming in SDR and flickering (Although Rtings say there is not noticeable flickering). Could somebody advise? Thanks
Newest update fixed the blown out sdr image when local dimming is on. They added a new low flicker mode in the local dimming options too. I've been using local dimming on high and havent noticed any flickering when hdr and adaptive sync are both on. I use a 3090 so most of my framerates are pretty high 90+ in multiplayer games. I get around 50 - 60fps in hogwarts legacy and havent noticed any flickering at lower framerates. I think the KVM issues are still there but I dont use that feature.
This is a great video. I am in the market for a new monitor to replace my current Viotek GNV34DBE. It's currently between the GP27Q as a cheap option or the AW3423DWF. If CM finally ever fixes all the issues with these monitors they will be great.
I'll tell you one piece of advice, the alienware oled is good but burn in is going to happen, I'm on my 3rd one since release , dell has to keep replacing it. Although other than that it's a pretty good monitor for hdr and even sdr content. The main culprit for burn in on these is youtube and content with black borders.
@@mattg768 Are you using HDR 1000 mode? I got the DWF finally and have only been using HDR true black. That's plenty bright enough for my location and using Win11 SDR content slider turned down to 25%.
I appreciate the follow up on these monitors, as they did for moment, seem like the perfect affordable HDR 10, mid range, high FPS monitors for a moment. I think I will wait until the real next generation of monitors with better HDR performance come around.
Does it flicker when moving/switching windows (alt tabbing) in windows? The LG C1 does this when windows are mostly white - not the standard dimming when the full screen is white, but quick flickers a couple of times in one second briefly.

Tim, I beg you! Become the champion of pc budget gaming by being the person who consistently informs the masses about CUSTOM RESOLUTION! The world of pc gaming at large is ignorant to the fact that they can set up an array of resolutions between 1440p and 4k for example, so they can have the fps as well as the graphics quality settings they want! 1530p 1620p 1710p 1800p 1890p 1980p 2070p...! these resolutions installed in our gpu's resolution options allow for the best gaming experience possible without the unnecessary and often abysmal side effects of upscalers like fsr and dlss. It's an absolute game changer having these and we're talking maybe only 4% of the gaming world knows about it. Because out of the 25 or so people I've brought it up to, 0 have been aware of it! And with '8k' kicking around the gaming world but not taking off CLEARLY there is a serious problem with people having this as a go to, all these 8K videos, choppy as can be , I can't what them as their performance drops into the 40's, all they have to do is do a custom resolution of 3600p and there video will look almost every bit of 8k but flow at 60fps easily. playing FH5 I get 95-105fps with max settings at 4k with my 3080, all i do is drop it to 2016p and I get my 115 desired 'frame-buster' GSYNC fps setting on my 4k 120 tv... flawless, beautiful, the scaler in that game creates nasty artifacts on the road and the DLSS option is a HUGE step back! I just don't understand why I'm the only person I've ever known to see and express this... not sure where I'm suppose to send you a question for videos where you answer comments but I'd love it if you could plug this in. Okay thanks Tim you are the monitor man! I got a MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD for my mother who has eye issues on sale back when it dropped because of you and it's been a real pleasure for her, she's on it about 16hrs a day lol!
This is how things are done everywhere now. Products released half baked and best case scenario get fixed along the way. In less ideal scenario they never get fixed.
I love and hate my GP27U - love the colour, the contrast , the brightness but HATE the fact I can't select between inputs without getting a black screen (no OSD). Even when it does work the OSD occasionally refused to operate and the only solution is turn the monitor off/on. Probably going to return it as even with 1.2.1 firmware it's just toio flaky for daily use.
You don't have to reboot the monitor, press CTRL SHIFT WINDOWS B it will reset the drivers. (sometimes you need to do this twice) Way more easy then turning it off and on again. This works 9 out of 10 times, the 10 time only solution is indeed off/on. ALT WINDOWS B is HDR on/off

I didn't understand, does the flicker happen even with VRR disabled ?
With FALD off, though, it looks about the same as any other good wide-gamut IPS panel.

The 1.4.1 firmware update was released in November. Any chance of updating your verdict?
New firmware update V1.4 - 11/27/2023, would love for you to test this again.
Seems like they uploaded new firmware versions. For GP27U, it is currently version 1.3.1. For GP27Q, it is currently version 1.2.1.
BTW, seems like the company making those monitors is in fact KTC. They have released nearly identical monitors.
I still can't find one in stock. Especially in Canada, but not even in the US.
He is definitely over selling the flickering. In practice and not in a super specific, unrealistic testing scenario, it's a non issue.
Save $500 and go for the GP27Q. 4K isn't worth it yet.
have you tested the 1.2 firmware? I think there is a low flicker mode now, but I'm curious what the tradeoff is.
It sometimes even takes long enough for games to open on the secondary display instead of on the GP27U.
there is 1.4 update relased on 24.1.2024 can you make update?

You need to advertise this channel more in the main channel. You could mention it in the end of every video.

Quite satisfied with the screen otherwise though.
@@edwards409 Agreed, the monitor is amazing but i got a love/hate relation with the Q cause of the firmware.

What is it like with SDR content and local dimming on? Do you know?
What does the picture look like in SDR? I'm not a fan of 'no detail in shadows' and 'nuked highlights' that HDR causes.
