(From another 10b area) My strawberries were never really growing all that well, so I've been experimenting with companion plants, and I found a companion that helped my berries thrive: Carrots. I just mixed them in all over the place. The other planters I have with other experimental mixes still have the same underperforming plants, so there's something about the carrots that the strawberries like.
Wasn't really something I expected, but, hopefully somebody else finds this comment useful.

That’s so bizarre, my daughter in law just told me yesterday, 5/10/23 don’t plant strawberries with carrots because the berry tendrils choke out the carrots. She ran out of room in her garden due to not wanting to plant berries with carrots but I’ll tell her of your success with this method which just gained her more room, thanks for sharing! 🍓🥕

Mulch is also important to keep dirt off the strawberries and keeping them from going moldy. Straw is a good choice (thus STRAWberries) but wood chips are decent too. Strawberries make a nice ground cover in a food forest or orchard. You might think about rooting the runners that will come from those strawberries into solo cups and soil, and transplanting those runners around your fruit trees when you put them in. They can do alright with partial sun, but if you are concerned you can plant them to the south side of the trees to maximize light. If you let them set runners, the number of plants will easily triple by the following year. That'll triple your fruit production. You might harvest 8 oz a week this year, and then 24 oz a week next year. That'll be enough to start making strawberry jam. :D

I planted bare rooted everbearing strawberries last year. All of them produced well. With the daughters (the runners), I now have nearly 100 plants in my raised beds. Although I mulched them, I added a layer of pine straw once winter temperatures dropped well below freezing. Just checked them, and they're all happy 😊 Loved the video!!!❤

You are my hero. I’ve been trying to do them from seeds for about a year now and haven’t figured out the magic formula. I currently have a mini pot with a couple of sprouts (not too excited, I’ve killed them after this before) and another seeded mini pot in the fridge. Such a frustrating project, esp for a fruit that REALLY likes to grow itself everywhere al on its own. 😂

@@RistoPaatsama Tell me about it. I started Rügen (alpine strawberry) about three weeks ago, and while most popped out pretty nice within a couple of days, they a) grow slow as hell and b) some lost their leaves and died soon after coming up without me having any idea why. The remaining still have only few millimeter long cotyledons - and this is after three weeks of growing.

Yes, I’ve grown from seed and from runners.
And starting from runners are so much quicker.
Good luck, with your alpine strawberries. Once they get a bit established they really can handle a lot.
But in the beginning they can dry out and die very easily, because they have such shallow root systems and are so small plants.
Probably one of the easiest things I’ve ever grown (and one of the most delicious).
My verity of alpine is a runner verity, so they quickly become their own ground cover. So I have more or less no weeds to handle.
They leaves quickly cover all the available soil, so it’s under shade and helps keep the moister.
Most summers I don’t even water my alpine land. Only occasionally if it’s a dry spell. But that will obviously depend on your climate. Alpine strawberries grow in the wild all around me in my area.
And my relatively small land produce so much I can make a small harvest every 1-2 days, that is enough for a berries and cream desert for 4 ppl. And it produces for months.
Letting the berries get a dark red colour I’ve found really let’s the alpine taste amazing.
And the berries grown a little slower under the leaves in shade or partial shade often are the sweetest.

    • @RistoPaatsama
      @RistoPaatsama 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@laartje24 There is no magic tricks. They will grow very slowly and you will have to just baby them, making sure the soil doesn't dry out as you said. I prefer using fairly low nutrient soil, and giving fertilizer only when i see signs of too slow growing. In general I probably use less fertilizer than others since I always prefer growing good root system before pushing the plant to grow.

Removed any dead/decayed growth. 4. Planted them in pots with good raised bed soil. 5. Kept them watered to damp (not soaked or dry) point every 1 to 2 days. 6. I had to laugh at your spacing, planted all in neat rows....... we all know what will happen by the end of the season, that bed will just be a huge mass of strawberries. No gaps and no space. I love using strawberries as a living mulch.
This brings me to another point. I know you have blueberries in pots, but for those of us who can grow them in the ground, if you get the medium to tall blueberries, plant the strawberries around the blueberries, cut the strawberries back from the base of the blueberries. Now you have the perfect companion plants, they both use the same fertilizer mix, both have similar water requirements, the strawberries don't mind the acidic soil, the strawberries will help keep the blueberries moist and the strawberries will help attract pollinators for the blueberries. I have 11 varieties of blueberries with 11 varieties of strawberries all in one bed. We are still getting fruit going into autumn.

I’ll be starting the Alpine strawberries from seed. I have a few in my grow cabinet now. Finally got a greenhouse and put up the framing for it. Cover will probably go on this weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing how they grow in a Mr. Stacky. I finally put my Greenstalk together and planted that with Purple carrots, Beets, Leeks, onions, chives and peas. I just hope we don’t get anymore bad freezes. Zone 8a in Virginia. Keep up the good work Kevin! Your place looks amazing!

Doing my research on growing strawberries and I’m excited for this season, I tried growing some transplants back during the pandemic but was unsuccessful this time around I’ll be trying it in a vertical planter and being more diligent about the varieties I grow. I live in Los Angeles, CA so I’m between Zone 9 & 10, I’ll be keeping the strawberries indoors for a bit until the frost goes down. Also expecting and due in April so I want my baby to be able to have his own strawberries by summer maybe 🤔 😅🍓❤️

I live in a much volder climate than you and a good and cheap way to lower the PH of the soil over heris to cover the strawberrybeds with chopped up branches from the spruce tree. It is very rich in vitamin C and the spring rain will carry that acid into the soil. thank you for this nice video.

ohh nice I had a few varieties of everbearing strawberries in a raised bed 2 years ago and 1 of my chickens got out and decimated the entire patch so I'm starting over this year with some from stark bros

Man. I needed this video 😂. I bought a “bag” of strawberry plants one day and got them home and there was this weird looking wad of roots in the bag. Didn’t see any green or crowns or anything 🤷‍♂️. So I then order some surecrop junebearing strawberry’s from stark bros and they came pretty much the same way but o could see the crowns and green portions you pointed out in this video. 😅
I was about to throw them all out and go buy some single plants lol.
This sounds incredibly dumb but I had no idea how these came. I just assumed they were going to come as strawberry plants that were already planted in little pots 😂.
    Thank you !!

Totally! Bare root is the way to go. I also grow alpine strawberries from seed, which really saves me money and, with the right type, can create a less demanding groundcover than the garden-variety. Berry season is almost upon us!!! :)

I have alpine berries 2 white plants and 4 red. This is the second year and they are blowing up. Even with my tortoise accidently "pruning" them last year. Can't wait for the berries this year. Already flowering heavy.

I planted 2 dozen Seascape bare root plants in Indiana a week after buying them, I kept them in the fridge in a wet rag and plastic bag. A week later after planting... leaves on all of them.

I'm no expert I just want to make that very clear.
But I had a very good laugh over how much you said to be gentle with the strawberry plants. I tried the plastic covered mound method with mine this year and it was just stab lots of holes in a black plastic bag, jab fist fulls of strawberries into said holes. No finesse, certainly very little gentleness. And I packed them in. (I've a very small cement locked urban garden.)
So far so good, they are the tallest I've ever seen home grown strawberries, it's barely May and there are so many flowers!
With any luck the plastic mounds will keep the berries from going soggy and gross like they usually do in the rain.

some people don't like to soak strawberries in an anti fungal, but I would encourage it to help prevent root rot especially if they have been in stassis all winter it will also help to wake them up in spring. There are also some great organic options for those who are concerned about that.
