I always saw "Sou Hiyori" as a persona, a mask handed from Midori to Shin as a way to (unhealthily) cope with the situation. Sou represents that worst of the death game, the betrayal, the manipulation, and the nihilism. Accepting Sou *is* giving up hope on trust and friendship and accepting the philosophy of the death game.
From a certain perspective this is the case. In Shin's case, it's likely the only healthy outcome is to part with Sou, unless he himself can find his own way to redefine it. Personally I believe the ultimate outcome of the Logic Route will be an end to Sou; where the Emotion Route Shin dies and Sou lives, instead Sou will die and Shin will live. But Sou is also defined by the people who knew him. Kanna, who saw his kindness and love, didn't know Sou to be that at all. Even after everything she still calls him Sou, because to her Sou was a good person. Thanks for the comment and chance fo elaborate on things I couldn't really put in the video due to getting off topic.
9:57 yeah! The ambiguity here is genius to me. It’s easy to blame Joe’s death on Sou in one’s first play through, but there’s never evidence of that. (Side Joe spoilers in comments)
And there comes the truth-kind of. Joe was going to assemble everyone and met Sou and Kanna while they were walking out of the bar. Their conversation then was exactly like when Sou lied to Sara about voting Joe in second trial that Mishima died of. Sou didn’t led Joe into picking up sacrifice. But one, if they wanted to paint Sou as the villain so badly, can still argue that Sou said something about rest so Joe would go into the bar! (I don’t buy that at all) Trusting your fellow humans really is the key! I love this game and your analysis are very interesting!
it took me watching this video to realize that shin isn't wearing the scarf during his death in the emotion route. the scarf representing this facade of "sou hiyori" is brilliant in that case!!
i really like this take. sou is just a facade. i never fully understood why kanna trusted him but this video makes it so much clearer! thank you! nankidai really put alot of effort into creating him. so now im thinking, everytime hes kind and humble hes shin but when he loses all of that he becomes sou. it shows how hes a good and bad character who either dies a noble for saving kanna or redeems himself for being sou. this is such a interesting perspective i rlly enjoyed it!
For a second there I thought this was going to branch off into a theory that the scarf is haunted and anyone who wears it turns evil, but Sou Hiyori was up to his shenanigans even on days he wasn't wearing it, so that theory was short lived.
wow, this video essay is just so well done. perfectly encapsulates shin as a person and the circumstances that pushed him into his persona, becoming the reason why he acted the way he did during the death game. thank you for pointing out the scarves representing sou hiyori as an identity! i didn’t realize there was such a stark difference when he embraced his death as shin in the emotion route, as compared to keeping the scarf and his identity as sou during the logic route. amazing work!! ❤️

I agree with you!
I love how nankidai writes the character's psychology so much
The scarf is very interesting. It was never explained how Shin ended up having it since it is implied to be owned by Midori first
FACT: midori made up sou hiyori so shin would feel bad for him, and in general

Where is the chapter 3 part 2?
It’s currently in progress I believe! No idea when it’s coming out but I am waiting
Never saw him die, i heavily disliked Kanna. She was nothing but a hinderance and weighed down the group. I will probably never see the emotion route.
