"Nail polish for men" reminds me of those "tools for women" that are just normal tools with pink handles and higher price tags. All tools are for all people. All nail polish is for all people with nails.

I remember a post on reddit asking about skincare for men, and I commented that skin care isn't gendered. Like cetaphil doesn't melt male skin. I got so many replies from upset men 😭 they really need to break down those mental barriers holding them back
@@p1ish they have dr. squatch and all these other soap/deodorant companies marketing teams telling them their skin is different and special and needs separate products. Companies spend millions of dollars to create a false need so it is hard to combat that as a single tiny voice without a giant ad budget behind you.
@@p1ish that is really sad because the truth is that women's skin care is probably better than those male targeted brands. I actually have been liking Old Spice commercials because their tag line is "men have skin too" and they're showing a husband and wife fighting over the products and demonstrating that women and men can use the same stuff. I would like to see it go the other way more though, since it's alway been more acceptable for women to use male targeted items.
If this were wattpad Harry would contact you about how no girl has ever fairly critiqued his nail polish before and he would invite you backstage to his next concert

i think it’s very important to note that when she said “i don’t like this” or “this isn’t right” she gives a very detailed explanation as to why she feels that way
I am SO GLAD she mentioned the "using people's insecurities as a marketing angle" thing, even if only briefly. It never sits quite right with me either tbh
I agree typically but mgk specifically deals with a ton of mental health issues and had talked about being more transparent with what he’s going through, so I genuinely feel like that is why he did the marketing the way he did

i know (as she mentioned) that some people don't trust her reviews now that she has a nail polish line but I actually trust her reviews even more. before, to me, she was only a person who painted her nails regularly and knew nail polish from an experienced consumer's perspective. now, she actually has developed her own (very good quality) brand and her reviews include an even more detailed developer's point of view. and she really did and still values honesty in all her reviews.

I totally agree. She is one of the few TH-camrs I trust to give honest accurate reviews of products. She simply isn't the kind of person who could do otherwise. The fact that she always tries to include something positive speaks volumes. Plus, she gives good criticism that actually has value instead of just saying it isn't good or she doesn't like it.

I'm confident the MGK brand is simply custom packaging from a cheap wholesaler. It would explain the generic color names printed on the labels, the odd brush, and the generic black and white topper (which I totally have too from SH). Especially because slapping your name on a product made by a wholesaler is nothing new.
I'm positive Primark and MGK's line have the same supplier. The Primark bottles have the same shape, brush and design as MGK's nail polishes. Primark polishes go for £1 each, and MGK's are like £20 a pop

Harry's polishes are sustainably and ethically made, so I'd say the price is pretty fair. I think a lot of people are used to stuff not being made in a sustainable or ethical way so the price seems steep, but all things considered, I think its a solid price.
@@elisabethbug-wiltse8828 christine's polishes are $16/18 per bottle and are ethically made, high quality and have better packaging (her bottles, brush and box packaging are all custom) so that argument doesn't hold up. even mgk's polishes were better quality with much better packaging and were $18. harry's polishes are sorely overpriced

Much like Cristine's other recent video about luxury brands! I like that she is diving into the economic implications of these products. Shining a light on it and offering social commentary is needed and necessary. I imagine it's probably creatively satisfying for her, too. Her perspective as a producer of polish, being intimately aware of the details of what it takes to make a truly good product, makes her views here valuable. I'm not even much of a nail polish person, but I have great respect for Cristine.
The mgk brand where they just wrote the colors is actually soo helpful because I’m colorblind and when brands make fun cute names for the shades it’s hard to tell what the actual color is sometimes so when they actually use the name of the actual color it’s refreshing
While that is helpful I don't believe that was the intention if it was it'd be even better
Considering the creator I doubt that was the intention. The best option would be to write "Product Name (color)" similar to how bath and body works scents are named "Scent Name" with a description of what notes are included below or on the back

Valid point. I think that just means they need to have both on the bottle. The disconnect between the names on the site and the names on the bottle are confusing, if only a little. Accessibility is huge so that little change is awesome!

When a celebrity brand is super overpriced, that’s almost always a sure fire way to know that the celebrity isn’t actually involved in the brand and is just being paid for the use of their name.

@@Moody__Mango If a celebrity is involved in the brand, they’ll want it to succeed. In order to succeed long term, they’ll need it to be priced fairly so that is appeals to a wider demographic within the market and not just their fan base.
If a brand wants to use a celebrity’s name, they have to pay tens of thousands to millions of dollars (depending on the level of celebrity) in licensing and fees. In Harry’s case, I’d say millions. Those costs are reflected in the cost of the item ultimately making it super overpriced.

the Pleasing set is just 4 comum but overpriced nail polishes. Here in Brazil this set cost around R$ 660 and considering the monthly salary of 80% of the population is R$ 1200..... yeah... the price is more than half the salary.

For a price comparison to anybody who didn't think to check, Holo Taco's cremes are 11$ a bottle. The holos and shimmer toppers are 13$.
As per the volumes, Pleasing's bottles are 0.43 FL.OZ; UNDN... doen't have it on the website, but thank Lord it's on the labels: 0.5FL.OZ; Holo Taco is in there with surprisingly the smallest bottles at 0.4 FL.OZ. (We could debate on the number of use, since pleasing has some weaker coverage and UNDN has a much thicker formula meaning a single layer will use more product while Holo Taco is both fluid and covering, but let's put that aside for now...)
That means Pleasing is at 4.65$ per 0.1 fluid ounce; UNDN at 3.6$ per 0.1 fluid ounce and Holo Taco down at 3.25$ per 0.1 fluid ounce (for the holos, the cremes are down at 2.75$), So yeah there is a steep jump comparing the same quality of polish (Pleasing vs/ HT's holos and UNDN VS HT's cremes) for the same quantity.
Just putting that here because I was suddenly Math-Crazed x)

Cool. I don’t own many nail polishes but every “drugstore” brand I’ve tried is super runny and doesn’t dry down hard like holo taco (though I need some thinner for the topcoat… so thick)

I really wish the last monologue was a separate video in itself so I could share it, because I think she’s speaking on something that everyone really needs to start thinking about

Other you tubers who don’t necessarily do it often but who I would trust a hundred percent are Kurtis Conner, Danny Gonzalez, And Drew Gooden (there’s more but they are so sweet and super honest)
I know I'm late af but I really liked Cristine's explanation at the end. When a celebrity comes out with a new brand or smth, you have to be able to separate the celebrity from the actual product. I remember back when I was a HUGE fan of Ariana Grande and she came out with her first perfume. I really wanted to get it but the price stopped me (plus I was like 15-16 so I didn't have any money). After thinking about it some more, I realized buying it wouldn't make sense for me because I rarely wore perfume so I never bought it. Then the same thing happened with BTS. The only affordable things they have on the official merch site are the albums and books. I'd love to have one of the tour shirts but they're like $300 each and I'm not about to drop that much money on a shirt. Later on I discovered fan made pins and clothes that were much more affordable so I bought those instead. I've since come to the conclusion that it's more accessible to buy from indie creators and small business owners who don't already have millions of dollars. That's not to say that you shouldn't support your favorite artists, but you should seek to support them in ways that won't have you spending half your paycheck on their stuff, and instead support them by buying their songs or just streaming their music
What? BTS Shirts are that expensive? Two weeks ago, I saw one of their sweaters at a second-hand-shop for 11€ and I considered buying it, but I am not a fan, I SHOULD'VE. Welp. Maybe an actual fan found it.
The products didn’t seem too bad painting wise, but didn’t seem to look any more unique or elevated from Sally Hansen or Revlon products for double the price.
I swear I had that matte blue topper and black and white glitter topper from Revlon 10 years ago

They scream white labelling to me. When a manufacturer creates a batch of product and other companies buy it and add their branding

No tea, no shade.. But seeing MGK being praised for "designing a gender neutral nail polish" when my _essence_ base coat has nothing feminizing on it (even has blue as the only colour on the bottle), neither the nail oil or cuticle remover from the same brand... while on the other hand my Bronx Colors top coat literally has a Venus cross on it made me chuckle.

That's what I was thinking! Like most nail polish bottles are pretty neutral I'd say.
Also, I have to say, Holo Taco is also wonderfully gender-neutral. Just didn't think of it because I didn't have some literally on my desk.
It's nail polish. Groundbreaking. But the design is sleek, there is a wide variety of colours, the names are often puns (and not on the front of the bottle, so even if it was _"Shimmering Rose"_ it wouldn't matter), and it's a neutral brand, compared to let's say Maybelline New York who is associated with ladies' makeup. You just didn't use that as a marketing tactic, and it is to your benefit in my book. :)
Also, Cristine never said that her polishes were exclusively for women, Ben regularly wears her polishes. It's interesting how it has to be a guy who will come out say "It's okay, dudes, you can wear MY polish, it's neutral".
And also fact that what is considered "gender neutral" is literally masculine like omg

I've always thought about what Cristine said at the end about the Glass Escalator Effect, like why are male beauty gurus more successful than women beauty gurus, when makeup is supposed to be a "women" thing. obviously i agree that men can do makeup and be beauty gurus, but they are more successful at everything just because they are men. women are always left behind even in feminine lines of work.
same with cooking and chefs, i only know famous male chefs when cooking has always been seen as a woman's job
As soon as it's related to money and public consumption, products created by men are more paid for than women. It's really weird. A lot of the top make up companies are run by Male Ceos.

I saw a tweet that said "Tell your boyfriends to break gender norms by cooking and cleaning, not by painting their nails."
And it's true. A lot of the time, cooking, cleaning, doing laundry is still seen as a "female" chore.
My dad is the one who does the cooking, cleaning, laundry, washing the dishes, feeding and bathing my 19 year old disabled brother because my mom is unable to do it. (Edit: some of you are taking my comment the wrong way. I didn't comment this as to say "see, not all men!!" I commented it because my mom is in the late stages of heart failure and my dad knows that this stuff can really take a number on her. He knows it isn't fair, so he decided to take over all the house chores so it wouldn't ware her out. They would always take turns but he decided to fully take over so she can't injure herself ♡)

I think if someone on MGK's team actually utilizes the criticism given in this video, the brand could be quite successful honestly. The product itself honestly isn't bad - one coat was actually enough. Just get a better brush and take actual photos of the product for the website instead of the edgy marketing and bam! A successful brand.
Short brush isn’t really a problem for everyone. As a guy that bought this product it’s much easier for me to control the smaller brush as opposed to the longer brushes most companies use.
@@MrLSDownliner It would be nice to be able to buy like a set of 5 brushes or something, so your bottle comes with a regular medium brush, but for like 7 dollars extra, you can get a compatible brush set

@@ccalvinn too be honest, sometimes it is for the 1 coat but I tend to always do two cause I’m still very new to doing my nails so I do two coats atleast just to correct any fuck ups I make with first.

The one “celeb” brand that is not clout is Fenty. Fenty is affordable, quality, and inclusive without pandering. Rihanna did right.

Yes, unfortunately you can. You can smoke while painting them. While doing reverse stamping. I have not encountered anything I can’t do while smoking.
I’m happy for you. I’d hoped it would help me but not at all. I do 3-5 Manis a week. I’m on Chantix, chewing nicorette between cigarettes. I just haven’t been able to stop.

The only 3 celebrities products I genuinely like: 1.) Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty and Fenty Skin is phenomenal and I’d recommend it to anyone even if you don’t like her music. It breaks boundaries with diversity and having darker skin tones for people of color. 2.) Selena Gomez rare beauty. I think this line is clean and modern and timeless. I can see people of all ages getting into this line even if they don’t keep up with Selena. 3.) Holo Taco. Seriously I never buy “TH-camr merch or products” but your nail polishs are amazing and aren’t something I can find in the drug store. I also love your transparency and kindness as a person. That makes me want to support your brand. You also don’t over charge for products when you could. I respect that.

Rare beauty is also affordable with all of the products being in the $20 to $30 range
I recommended selena's lipsticks to a friend and it turned out she already owns it and loves it and she didn't even know it was from her. So yeah, I guess this is it - do you know anyone that uses other celebrity brands without knowing it's from them? then maybe the brand is legit.

I don't think it break boundaries, there were already brands which had darker skin tones: MAC had (and still has) 60 shades, Morphe, Clinique, Estée Lauder and Tarte all have had more than 50 shades for a while. It's great (should be the norm) that Fenty went this route but it existed before (and cheaper than Fenty if I may add).
I just appreciate how she erases their celebrity value and tells her honest opinion

as a hardcore harrie: you were nicer on him than i was lol. for the price point i was so let down - the colors are nice, but it took 3-4 coats to become fully opaque, and even with a genuine base and top coat that i trust with my life it still chipped within 12 hours.
I would be very annoyed if I bought mail polish at that price point and I needed 3-4 coats PER nail. I would be done with the bottle in a few uses
thats crazy that it chipped that fast!! I didn"t use a top coat or base coat because I was so excited to use it when I got mine and I didn't have any, mine lasted for almost 2 whole weeks without chipping!

Crete is, by far, the best “gender neutral” nail polish line. The design of the packaging is more like a clicky pen instead of a nail polish bottle. The company was started, in part, by Lil Yachty in response to a young boy who was punished by staff at his school for wearing nail polish to school (even though there was no rule against it).
My husband has bought the last few Crete collections, and we both use them regularly. They’re awesome and they’re great for people who seem to struggle with not making a mess when painting nails.
I definitely would recommend them for a review.

i just wanted to quickly comment that i had no idea that top coat helps dry nail polish!!! ive always been frustrated doing my nails bc they always got imprints in them bc i would wait for them to dry for HOURS before attempting to put a top coat on!!!
I never knew of top coats until Christine, me and mom just used regular clear nail polish and the struggle ro not mess them up as they dried was awful. I would never go back to no top coat.

Despite the supposed bias that some would accuse Cristine of having since she has her own nail brand, I think she reviewed the polishes fairly. She said what she considered good points while also pointing out the flaws, all of which I agree with. Especially the points at the end about male celebrities having an easier time selling something if they label it as "gender breaking" when it kind of isn't.

As a man who wears nail polish - I wholeheartedly agree about the marketing tactic of trying to push the inclusivity of men wearing nail polish. This isn’t a bad thing, of course. Compared to Harry’s nail polish, MGK’s definitely was better. I like wide widths for the brush and the opaqueness was on point. However, when I buy polishes like holotaco and other lovely brands that actually meet every detail of nail art I can’t help but be biased. Lol I would not spend money on those polishes. I rather go to a drugstore and probably get a better quality for my nail art.

As a fan of Harry and someone who knows nothing about nail polish I've been waiting for this video for an honest review.
Literally never buy super hyped up, expensive nail polish. It's ALWAYS garbage. Not to sound like too much of a fan girl, but the best polishes are honestly from people like Christine. They're in the $10-15 range, which is pricy but it's usually because they're using high quality ingredients with American manufactoring. They're usually only sold online through a website or Etsy, etc. Otherwise, if you don't want to buy indie, you're best off going for your wet&wilds, your OPI, etc.
Kitschy themed brands and celebrity brands are never worth the markup with nail polish. Literally never.
honestly me too. I'm a fan as well and I was excited when I saw Harry working on some new things, but I could tell something seemed off with the packaging and by the photos and videos I came across on the internet, it didn't seem that great. I was patienly waiting for cristine to review this so I could find out what is actually up with this nail polish
I will say I LOVE inky pearl but no one needs to pay that much. I’ve had luck with the polishes and like the performances for the most part but I definitely bought them for him and the packaging and to try something new. They aren’t a must have :)

I get owning your own nail polish brand definitely gives you a bias on other products in the same market, but I thought it was really interesting that Simply gave her opinion on packaging and branding. It’s just a different perspective than what you’d normally get from a product review.

In that little montage near the end of celebrities and influencers releasing beauty products, Cristine and Holo Taco were there too. I think it was a small but significant gesture of self-awareness and honesty, and that's why we love you :)
Tbh I don't really include her in "celebrities" or "influencer" categories, she is just a gal obsessed with good nail polish and so created her own brand. She actually stands by her product and developed it herself, unlike alot of other celebrities/influencers who seem to have a major investment company, marketing and distribution companies backing them.

i feel like the people who decided on the small brush for mgk's nailpolish line were thinking: "men have small nails so you need smaller brushes for that unlike the nail polishes that are being sold right now which have longer brushes for longer nails of WOMEN! we've done it, we've created a genderless nailpolish line!"
As a male that uses this line as well as other lines that has longer brushes, I actually prefer the UN/DN shorter brush for my nails as opposed to the longer brushes.
I'm a woman and I prefer the short brush I hate those nail polishes wish long ass brushes. I hate the ones with super wide brushes too.
It's what everyone prefers, some will like the longer brush others will find that the shorter brush helps them better to achieve the look. For whatever the reason may be, I'm glad that all sorts of companies make diverse nail polish for everyone's liking.
@Jo Ray i am a woman and i have really small nail beds. it was hard for me initially to paint with bigger brushes because i'd get nail paint all over my fingers but i've gotten better with practice. my mom literally has nonexistent nails and she is fine with the bigger brushes too. the small brushes are a nice alternative for people that dont like bigger brushes but i dont see how they can really pertain to anything gender related?
While I’m aware of potential bias Holo Taco adds to these reviews, I also think it’s important to note that your experience owning a nail polish brand (and, as we have witnessed, your experience making the formulas) adds a new level of value to your review. You have insight from your own trial and error. I remember the first few collections had some hits and misses and you have done an excellent job reformulating to account for this. I see the difference firsthand when I use my first winter collection versus newer polishes with a similar flake.

Let's be real, WE ALL KNEW what you were thinking at first swipe of Harry's white polish vs MGK's white polish....Time and time again I've tried using other brand nail polishes and they just don't hold up to Holo Taco! Longevity for wear is key for me in a mani and HT has it! No other polish can stay on for a literal week and not chip than Holo Taco!

You mentioned one of my peeves about some nail polish sites, when they don't show swatches. 🤔😒😑Um...yea I really don't want to see a bunch of women biting into bon bons, giving a victory sign, or counting on their fingers. I want to see SWATCHES. Of JUST the nail polish. In different lighting, on different nail lengths and shapes and different skin tones. THAT'S what I'm looking to buy. The nail polish. I’d love to hear simply´s opinion on the „cruelty free“ argument that harry´s fans are justifying his prices with. Im not sure what that even means. Do nail polish brands still usually do animal testing? Is it really more expensive to make something cruelty free? Or is it just a publicity stunt justify the high prices?
Edit: some people have said that the mark up is due to the fact that his nail polish is “sustainable”. Again, I have no idea what that means when it comes to nail polish and I’m guessing most laypeople out there don’t know either. That’s why I’d like someone who is familiar with nail polish production and its ingredients to shed some light on this.
As far as I know Holo Taco is also cruelty free and vegan and still cheaper 😅
I've heard other beauty influencers call this out before... basically, so much testing was done on animals in the past, that all the brands "benefit" from that prior testing now and don't even need to consider it.
Holo Taco, Cirque Colors and ILNP are all cruelty free and have a lower price point
Idk about nail polish, but there are plenty of things you'd think don't need any more animal cruelty. But still there's eg cigarette brands that force dogs and monkeys to breath in smoke for 8 hours a day to 'research' the effects of smoking, when there are millions of people who literally pay to be the guinea-pig.
This applies to many parts of the beauty industry as well. Good new is there is a shift away from animal testing though so there are many brands to by from if you don't want to support it. I think sooner or later most companies will become cruelty free :)

I would be really irritated at the short brush. As the amount of polish in the bottle decreases it will just be harder to get polish out of the bottle

I'm thinking since it's for men, maybe they're thinking it's easier to use a brush that is shorter, just in itself (at least for people new to it), but also because many men have nails where you can't just swipe the brush off the ends, because there's a bunch of finger there, and the nail is often like embedded down in the finger....
I'm a gent with nails that aren't like that at all so I don't speak from experience, so I could be way off! Plenty of women also have fingernails like that, so the longer flexible brushes must be fine. Or just careful wiping afterwards to clean it up.

It’s really sad how people think they can’t give valid criticism to their fav idols because they love them… if anything, wouldn’t you wanna help them be better instead of delude them into thinking they’re perfect? I absolutely hate that about stan culture. It’s ok to critique your own idols, or not like a song they release, or disagree with something they said, the list goes on. More fans need to wake up.
I think for me, it comes down to the difference between merch and celebrity products. Merch is sold with the expressed purpose of supporting someone and engaging with a fandom, so you're buying into something with inherent value (albiet niche) beyond the product itself. Whereas celeb brands usually come with the same kind of emotive marketing to a preset audience but ultimately try and cash into a wider audience, and they have this really manipulative undertone where marketers expect the celeb's main audience to prop up a brand simply to avoid seeing their fav fail. Because otherwise, they would fail - the quality and price never match and the products are exceedingly ordinary.
Likewise, it's insulting to real brand owners who are actually involved in the development process and put out a quality product, whereas a celeb is just playing at being a brand owner because they can and for the cash grab.

As someone who’s in the one direction/harry styles fandom, you get a lot of “you’re a bad fan if you …” for example “… don’t support harry by buying this brand”. My nails are still pretty nubby, but I'm excited to try out your products when they grow out.
Even when reviewing competitors' lines, Cristine still gives the products the "brush montage". Professional, doesn't do her work halfway - love it.
And it really helps show the differences since we're used to seeing the montages with other brand polishes and the wonderful Holo Taco.
Part of what I love about Holo Taco is that 1) You really focus on high quality and it shows, 2) You offer variety that isn't available elsewhere, and 3) I'm supporting a WOMAN-OWNED beauty business. Thanks for the review and for bringing up excellent points, Simply!
I was skeptical about Halo Taco at first, but I bought a bottle and it was so amazing that I immediately bought more. It's definitely the best nail polish I have used (and I have used a lot). I just wish she'd put out more colors.

Maybe The Mens need to be assured they won't get boobs and high voices if they use it? Like you would get from a Female bottle of nail polish
