I recently missed out on acquiring a 26" G&E Shaper that was listed on Facebook Marketplace in the Detroit, MI area. It was stored outdoors under a tarp and needed attention and care. It did not have the auto down feature of which I preferred. So I continue to watch for another similar listing. Thank you for your excellent videos.

Thanks Stefan. Your Gack is an awesome machine! One thing I would like to point out, I cringe when you use your palm to hit the shaper wrench! I did the same when young and fight the urge to do it now. When you get older you will regret abusing your body! I use cheaters on such things now and do have a feel for machines and don't over tighten. It sucks to live in pain so be kind to your parts now for all to soon you will be a grayback too! ;)

Stefan, I watch and LISTEN to videos almost daily. I've been a machinist for over 20 years. And yes, you have taught me things. What I sincerely want you to know, is that you are one of the best machinist I have ever seen work. I do not say that lightly. Your dimensional accuracy is superb. I am more impressed with your attention to detail. Every thing you do has a plan and thought behind it. I respect this above all. Young Man, keep up this exceptional work. Regards, S. R. Simon

Nice overview of the Gack shaper! But, no matter the precision of the machine, operator skills are paramount and yours are just great. Enjoy what you do with any machine tools.l Was impressed by your making chuck jaws on the Gack. Thanks for posting.

Thank you Stefan for such a good explanation and clear video presentation of your Gack metal shaper. I was surprised no one mentioned that pull cutting forces the workpiece against the solid vise jaw instead of the moving jaw- thus improving rigidity and precision, as well as tool life. jd, MACHINECO ( 7" S.Bend, 10" Alba, 20" Rockford Hy-Draulic)

I think another important reason the machine needs to run in reverse for pull cutting is so the ratchet mechanism for the feed is timed correctly so that it advances during the return stroke rather than during the cut. I guess if it did advance during the cut then it would be even more like a lathe including the need for side relief.

what a nice machine. the adjustments are so well thought out. i have never seen a small shaper with a powered z axis. i had an 8 inch logan and when i ran it above a slow speed it would walk across the floor. had to bolt it down. that reverse clapper could solve the biggest pain of running a shaper, those darn chips.no matter what i did to control them,my wife was constantly finding them through out the house and in her washing machine. needless to say she was happy when i sold it .i'm sure you will find some interesting uses for yours.

Here it is 4 yrs and 10 months later since this video was made, and the Gack HE20 (even though 250mm smaller) or an Atlas 7in was in my sights, but ended up with a Klopp 450, and now in 2021 Dec started the restoration. The return stroke clapper,,,,and the attachment for cutting in internal key ways caught my attention (@@)!. Did watch that video as well, and my restoration will included a VFD to control the 2 speed 3ph newer motor. Any added thoughts, would be most appreciated. Bears Rod Shop in TX.

Very nice shaper Stefan. Going by the flaking that looks untouched on the rams ways in the video it seems it's had very little use since new and the previous owners lubed it as often as it should have been. But you've anticipated one of my future questions about that reverse style clapper box. Many thanks for taking the time to post the drawings on your website. That's a future project for my little South Bend for sure. Ever since you first mentioned that reverse clapper box it's made more than logical sense why that would work better on the smaller and maybe a bit less rigid shapers. Funny so few manufacturers built there machines with that option.
And it seems most of the shaper vises suffer from that part lifting issue. No one seems to make a short wide angle lock type vise that would work well on the smaller shapers either. Your idea of going to a grinding type vise with the solid fixed jaw to the rear and that reverse clapper box should work well even with there limited clamping power when compared to something like a much larger Kurt.
You probably already know it but others might not. A lot of the small shapers have phenolic bull gears in them so there's no metal to metal tooth contact with the associated gear noise. They come with a price though. Crash one of those shaper's hard enough and you will shear off teeth. But they are nice and quiet. Have to agree with Erling Weiseth as well. As always a very well done video.

By adding smal high speed grinder mounted on a place of a cutter you can easily make surface grinder with a precision you are talking about )

    • @davidlawrence8085
      @davidlawrence8085 7 ปีที่แล้ว

That could really have a place in a shop without a surface grinder......
I have some super hard bandsaw guides that need trued up. Perhaps with hand cranking the ram.....mmmmmm.......with a VFD the ram could be set to just the right slow speed.... wow

Found an old Dumore manual where they discuss mounting a "toolpost" grinder on a shaper ram. They said use an angle plate on the clapper box, wheel rotation should be so grit blows away from the ram.

"Don't slip a pipe over it and yank on it with 200 lbs." Amen Stefan!!! Common sense; no. The tighter the better... WRONG!
I have a friend who has sold quite a bit of second-hand machinery to me. The first thing that I do when I get one of his machines is put every one of the 3-jaw chucks into the scrap/rebuild bin. I can't tell you how many times I have had to use a pipe to loosen an abandoned part from one of his chucks.
200 lbs. equals 20,000 lbs. once a lever gets involved into the equation.

Curious why Bundeswehr would had such number of small shapers... Then remembered that G3 rifle was roller delayed with fluted chamber. If particular gun would be sticky on extraction, with this small machine armourers could tweak the chamber fluting.

By the large number of machines that the Bundeswehr had in storage, I think that was an attempt to save some desolate machine tool builders like Gack, Steinel and Klaiber.

I always wondered what's the real difference in facing surface on mill with facing mill and shaper. I would love to see such comparison using surface plate for checking.

I think you should try knurling with the shaper. I can't think of any fundamental reason it wouldn't work provided you removed the clapper box and made the stroke shorter than the work piece so it doesn't lose contact.

Please be careful when using the pull clapper box. They are very risky to use. The mounting is only good for compression and any crash, like a part slips in the vise for instance, can rip the box off the ram. Also any slip of the part, vise ect. can smash it into the machine ways.

Completely agree about the high angle shear tool with the big radius. It's the type I normally used in the shaper. Iron, mild steel, tool steels, bronzes even plastics. but if you think your shaper is loud we had a couple of Rockford hydraulic shapers. Nice machines but loud. Great, great video. I have just started to learn the shaper. Horinzontal cutting is going allright. I have two questions 1) how do you control the dimensions of dove tails. it seems that it takes only s very small cut to change the part from just too small to much too large. 2) the grooving tools I have ground have the tendency of chattering in the beginning of the cut. Any ideas?thanks very much for your instructive videos, keep up the good work.

      1. Same as on the milling machine, measuring with two pins and gage blocks and using a dial indicator to move the machine the desired distance, sneaking up to the final dimension.
      2. I try to keep the groving tool as sharp as possible, with positive cutting angle and a nice chipbreaker, clearance angles should not be to big, otherwise the tool gets a bit flimsy...

  • @DDBerlin
    @DDBerlin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks Stefan, nice presentation. I am running mine with way oil instead of grease as well. Unfortunately it has a bit of play between the rocker arm and the bronce (actually gunmetal or Rotguss as we call it here) drive block, telling me with a little "click" when it's longing for more oil, but the overall sound seems to be smoother than Yours. Do You have grease on the big inner gearwheel? You can easily access it, when the ram is in the forward position. If I remember it right, I used Molycote, which also contains graphite.
You forgot to tell about the nice dial gauge-holder, which came with Yours and is on my to do list (currently improvising using a small noga).
Also interesting to hear that You're not fully satisfied with the vice, as mine came without and so I am currently using one of these grinding vices, which works pretty well apart from the lack of rotation base. Maybe, I should just get a slightly bigger one and stick to that type of vice. Building a rotation base could then be a project for the shaper :-)

I will probably try to add a pull type clapperbox from your plans. My shaper has slanted ways for the table though, so I don't know if that is going to be a problem?

+Peter Heuts Wow, I looked at a picture of your machine - Thats a unique design - I have no idea how it would be affected with a pull type clapper box...but my gut-feeling is telling me you would be fine.
Ps: Dont sue me if the table gets ripped of the guideways ;)

See if you can talk MuellerNick into being a guest in your shop for a video. He never talked in his videos and seemed such a great resource for machinists, much too good to lose. I think he decided he could not abide Google+ (very smart man).

Hi Stephen, A very good mechanic has more control with an air impact than your slapping that wrench handle with your hand, and a lot less nerve damage. Just wrist tighten and loosen with down strokes, and never pull the wrench up, no more slaps " bad habit" and your nuts will thank you.

Hi mate. I had the opportunity to buy a small shaper like your one, and I didn't. I can kick myself for letting it go. My motivation was that I wanted a mill, and should not buy a shaper. How irresponsibly stupid is that? And now I've got neither. Like I have said before, that is a very nice machine mate, well done.

+Marcel Timmers I was just thinking about your comment, and while a mill is certainly more versatile, the tooling to get it set up is astronomical in comparison to those 5 double ended bits and three clapper boxes I would think.
I still have neither a mill or a shaper either, and shapers are like a rare gem nowadays, and all of the ones I see for sale around here are in pieces but still have a big price tag...we can dream though, right mate?

How right you are. Not too long ago I drove for about 3-3.5 hours to have a look at a shaper, thinking, if it is a good one I'll throw it on the back of the ute. When I got there, the bloody thing was big enough to sink an aircraft carrier. so, not so much. Not so hot today, only 40.5c The dogs won't get a run today me thinks.

Stefan, Thank you for your videos, I've learned a lot. I have an Ammco 7 inch, approximately 177 mm. This machine was built by Atlas for Ammco. I have found a link to a 1947 Operation manual wentztech.com/WebDisk/Metalworking/Shaper/Atlas%20Manual%20S7B%20Parts%20List%20Catalog%207B.pdf For the Atlas 7 inch shaper. The manual says the machine should be operated in only one direction and cautions users to be aware of three-phase motors and ensure that the direction of the motor's rotation be verified. I will add; the Atlas/Ammco shaper is designed such that the return stroke is much quicker than the power stroke. For anyone who might be interested in an Atlas or Atlas clone, be aware, the bull gear is made from a phenolic plastic that has a fiber reinforcement, it's entirely possible to crash these machines such that the bull gear gets stripped.
    Respectfully yours, Olin
