      What about isolating for disease? Aren’t you worried about spreading illnesses to your current population?

    • @GardenStateTortoise
      @GardenStateTortoise  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@e.m8805 there is no need to isolate or quarantine these animals as we only accept them after that’s been done. Since we are a professional, state permitted facility, of course everything is taken seriously here. It’s just hard to remember to say every detail in the videos.

    • @e.m8805

      @@GardenStateTortoise thank you for clarifying and for all you do.

      @@GardenStateTortoise You did say they had arrived after quarantine. It might be that you have to emphasise it. For those who know of it's importance but don't listen well, and those who are ignorant and don't know of it's importance and miss the importance of the brief reference.
      Might be worth making regular statements at the start of videos, maybe every fifth? about how important it is to not just release an unwanted reptile. Because it might not be an environment in which they can survive AND they could be released carrying an illness that will wipe out the local native population.
      Maybe you could list a phone number in your description for north and south states, maybe east and west states, that have a list of rescues in each state, that people can ring to hand over unwanted reptiles?
      As to why quarantine would be done before arriving at a species specific rescue;
      There is no point in 2 rescues risking illnesses. Far better to do the quarantine at surrender rescue, as this rescue would have so many animals that would be at risk.
      I am wondering about the wonderful dream homes these new arrivals have - and everybody, feeling so healthy, thinking about having babies - or at least, s ex.
      It sounds like you have a few girls who qualify as Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, in the tortoise world. Won't they be pursued lustily, and if adult and feeling really healthy, won't many decide to breed?
      I imagine the resultant native species teenagers might be able to go to sites needing repopulation, to other reptile parks with great reputations, but I don't see you happy about sales to pet homes.
      Some of the rarer species must be a joy to have breed, but what of the crossbred ones?
      Do you rehome the crossbreds to experienced pet homes, not for breeding?

    I was given an ornate box turtle from a friend and took it to the vet so I could learn how to take care of it, he told me alot about her and why her shell is also flipped up on the edges. I changed her diet and man did she come to life! Her beak is cute back also! I have had her for 14 years now and have learned so much from watching yalls channel. Her house is now outside, where she has hibernate 3 winters. " I was a wreck." I love the fact I am able to let her live a wild and natural life that nature intended ❤

    One of my friends had a tiny red eared slider forced on her at a white elephant gift exchange party. When she told the person that brought it that she didn’t want it, they said that if she didn’t take it, they would put it outside in the snow. So, she took it in and gave it a great life living in her pond and a stock tank. Eventually, though, the care became too much with her health. She was lucky and found someone else who was experienced and wanted the turtle. She passed it along with the stock tank, filter, and lights she was using for the enclosure.
    People need to stop treating these animals as something disposable. I also fear that there are far too many sulcata tortoises being produced and we’ll start seeing a wave of them soon.

    Thank you so much for this upload, I work at a pet store where I turn away so many people looking for "a baby turtle for my small child" -- I actually recommended a sweet couple to this channel a couple days so hopefully they followed through for more proper research. So many people just don't know or understand the right care requirements and it always feels nice seeing people really understand and actively try doing better

    This hit close to home. As someone who's very passionate about animal rescue, I'm so pleased to know you are so involved! I urge anyone looking to any kind of pet to check with rescues and shelters before ever considering buying from a breeder. We get birds, guinea pigs, reptiles, and bunnies etc at the shelter! It's not just dogs and cats that get rejected. People don't realize what a commitment ANY animal is, and research is so important beforehand. Great video, and thank you for doing what you do.

    It's crazy how many sliders are surrendered places. I am over in WNY and have about a dozen rescued sliders at the moment and would have more, but I have to decline so many as well. I wish I could help more, but I already have a lot of other rescued turtles and tortoises among a bunch of other animals that have been surrendered over the years. You and your family are doing amazing work as always! Keep up the great work and I can't wait for Wednesdays video! 🐢🔥

    An rv park I stayed at had two massive ponds with red eared sliders and everyday on my walk with my dog, we would keep an eye out for turtles on roads. my dog was awesome at finding the babys (she wouldn't attack, just get really excited and sniff them) then we would carry them to the pond so they wouldn't get crushed by cars. Red eared sliders are truly a large turtle. I removed leaches off of one lady's shell, she was a really sweet turtle, some would hiss and hide, but she stayed out the whole time I carried her. I saw a handful laying eggs just outside the pond. I even found a baby snapping turtle one day and that little dude looked just like a shark I swear lol. I hope not too many are getting run over now that I'm gone, people drive like crazy through that park.

    I've been a turtle lover most of my life, and I'm so glad people like you exist who know how to care for these creatures. Watching your channel has proven to me that while I am in love with turtles I could never keep one, I would never be able to care for one the way it needs to be cared for, it takes a lot of effort and knowledge and only those who have the time, space and money should keep them. I appreciate them in the wild or in reserves and aquariums. Thank you for taking care of our little friends in this world.❤ ps your daughters are so helpful and lovely, they're the best assistants!

    I have three turtles. Two red-footed tortoises and a Cherry Headed Red-foot. That is all I will ever have. I live in NY State. I have them in an Avituvin enclosure like the one you set up in a previous video. I got them as hatchlings and I researched what they need prior to getting them. They have an 8ft X 3ftx 3ft enclosure that is coming in May. They are outgrowing the Avituvin terrarium. I will set it up with biological soil and proper lighting/heat/humidity/diet. I have had aquatic turtles from the time I was a kid until I was in my 40s (150gal tank). Always had only one or two because I lived in NY City as an adult. As a kid in Jersey we had local stuff outdoors in enclosures in the yard. It was the 60s/70s. Husbandry is essential to keeping a healthy animal. Also know your limits and the animals. I love your videos. I learn a lot from you. You do great work.

    I actually rescued a red ear from my local humane society recently. She had been stored in a container filled with water the entire time panicking . I told them she needed more than a tub , at least give her platform and lighting . They flat out gave me her for 5.00 because as the lady said they didn't know how to care for reptiles. I didn't intend on getting a turtle but i just couldn't leave her on that shelf. Sjes adjusting to her new habitat and so far she's coming around slowly but alot happier with her pond and logs.
