    I'm NOT a comedy snob, truly I'm not... But, Stewart Lee is the DISTILLATION of everything we know and love about good comedy... By the way, clever as he ARCHLY is, there is a genuine soul at the centre of his humour... If Lee challenges ANYONE, (and he does...) he challenges himself more... It's TOO EASY to say that if you don't GET Stewart Lee then you know FUCK ALL about the art of comedy and how he USURPS that... (It's also TRUE to say that!!!) xx SF

      Maron is a loser who is so emotionally fragile know one can tell him he's unfunny. Norm MacDonald tried (awkwardly) during a podcast once, but that's as close as it's come. Him acting like he's a successful stand up is a tragic delusion. In fact his entire life is a tragic delusion.

      @@jameslutian1977 It's all very subjective about his funniness, but he's obviously quite successful as a comedian. An unsuccessful comedian would be a guy who can't make a living off it and who no-one has heard of apart from the people they bore down the local open mic, and even they forget the name shortly after.

      I'm aware of the big discrepancy between what it means in UK and US, however, in the UK it's still less friendly than saying 'hello', especially when you think this is someone who's just been to his show (that said, it doesn't surprise me). It's sort of like acknowledging someone's presence without wanting to introduce yourself.

    The best interview I've heard with Lee - I don't know if it's Marc's technique particularly (tho he is good at being complimentary and he's actually done research) so much as Lee being sober and undepressed at the time of it, but whatever, a good result is achieved.

    • @aliofly
      @aliofly 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Matthew McVeagh I've listened to that a couple of times - it is a little bizarre, he hardly lets anyone else speak and seems in a pretty bad mood. I assumed it was because he wasn't that keen on going back over all that old stuff (which he doesn't seem to rate as highly as Herring) and that he doesn't think it merits re-releasing. Wouldn't have said he is drunk though (even if he was drinking during it) Apparently he also went on about Herring's agents for ages, and how they were treating him badly, which resulted in a bit of an awkward atmosphere in the room (all that was cut out)

    • @emdiar6588
      @emdiar6588 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, and for the exact same reason. In the UK 'what's up?' is a genuine inquiry which means 'what's wrong, why are you upset/annoyed?'. Back in the 90s when I first heard an American ask me 'what's up?', I replied 'Nothing, why?'. He looked confused and said 'No, just saying whatssup'. It took me a while to realise he was just saying 'hello, how are you?', like when we say "alright mate'.

    Stewart Lee is probably the best stand up in England. No one really comes close. If you want some more English comedy then check out Brass Eye. Chris Morris is a genius. Also, "Y'alright" is just like saying hello, it's not a question! I understand how it can sound weird but she was almost certainly being friendly and just trying to say hi. Probably trying to initiate a conversation.
    If someone says "y'alright' then all you need to say back is "y'alright". Just think of it as saying "hey".

      Tony Howard But that's not what Stewart Lee does... he's admitted that he's not a mega funny guy just off the cuff in real life. He puts his routines together meticulously, that's what he does... You know, I'm sorry you haven't found the HILLLLLLLLARIOUS banter that you crave... Russell Howard was too busy to come down and feed Stew jokes about how mad shit is, I guess.
