i just covered a cake in fondant for the 1st time on new yrs day and i wish wish wish i would have seen this video b4 hand...i love this video i like how u took ur time and u got close with the camera...thx u soooo soooo much for this video.
Thanks for your helpful video! I was halfway through the fondant on my first cake (a car for my son with heaps of contours to leave me with somewhat of a skirt to press out) and found it via google. Short sharp and to the point, it let me quickly watch & run back to smooth out my cake hehe. I just needed a little extra confidence to keep going with the smoothing.
This was really really helpful. I am really into baking but I just want to get some experience from the Internet to improve my baking skills thank you very much for doing this video
I have been looking for a video that shows how to get the bottom smooth and this video helped alot! I will try your method on a cake Im making tonight!
@FieldsOfCake can I just ask what the cake was covered in before you started? Was it buttercream? If so, did you say you'd chilled the cream before applying the fondant?
For my boyfriends birthday I plan to make a guitar and cover it in fondant to make it look nicer, but I've heard fondant doesn't always taste too wonderful. Also, would it be harder with the odd shape of a guitar? Please answer whenever you have a chance! xx
@MaxDexus I've been doing fondants too and I use cornstarch. IT doesn't affect the taste of the fondant - i mean, it still tastes the same, just not as sweet. If you want your fondant to taste sweeter, I guess you use powdered sugar, but I like my fondant not as sweet so I use cornstarch. :) It doesn't leave a funky taste on the fondant at all. :)
First time seen your videos and just loved them. Could you give a good recipe for fondant and how to make it? Mine just does not work... maybe you have already posted, but I have not seen it yet. Thank you and great hands!
it is not "necessary " but it helps to prevent wrinkles and keep it to stay in place. If you have a soft very moist cake you could get away with not using icing but if you want crisp clean lines rather than a rounded look then you'll want to use icing.
You can wet a thick napkin and wring it out so it's almost dry... damp but not wet. Then you simply wipe the cake... lightly, don't press.... just sweep it across the fondant. It will take away any white. Then you let the cake dry before you decorate it just incase you left any traces of liquid.
if I need the cake for a friday night, can I make and cover it with fondant on the previous Sunday? or will the fondant be too hard to eat by that time?
i'm new to the fondant world! i'm struggling more with the frosting underneath. don't know what i'm doing wrong, but as i put the fondant on my chilled cakes the frosting comes out of the bottom of the fondant and is a mess! help me please!! i'm using a butter cream underneath.
the reason why people say only use icing sugar is because the fact that corn starch usually causes a reaction with the fondant making it crack or become hard.
This is not a critique, this is a genuine question: shouldn't you be using powered sugar to cover your work surface instead of cornstarch? I've been doing a lot of research on fondant (i.e. watching lots of youtube vidz, lol), and the experts mostly use sugar because among other things, cornstarch could leave a funky taste on the fondant. Also, I thought cornstarch or sugar alike should be LIGHTLY POWDERED onto the surface, not like those giant globs of cornstarch you are using.
Over the past few days, I have been watching tons of baking videos. YOU are the ONLY one who I've seen wear gloves. Thank you Thank you Thank you!

That was incredible Thank you
this is a great demonstration.
Should the cake being chilled or at room temperature ? or does it matter ?
do you have to cover the fondant to a cold cake covered with cold buttercream? is it possilble to cover the fondant to a newly frosted cake?
so do we ice the cake first before we fondant it?

@icecreamxaddictx Marshmallow is my guess...i have heard from multiple people that it is the one that tears the least and is easiest to make.
