Of course, he has to say, "I was blown away" when talking about what he saw🤷‍♀️ I live in Australia and we get so much damage from cyclones. I'm just grateful I'm not in a tropical part of the country and I'm far south enough not to go through that kind of thing. It's sad seeing countries like the Philippines, where people already don't have the best infrastructure, services, etc, being hit so often.

I live on the east coast of NC USA and we get hit enough to remember. We just left Florida and they're about to get rocked with a cat 4 hurricane Helene. The disaster and damage after is hard to swallow but you come together as a community and deal with it and fix it together ❤ stay safe out there y'all

meteorologist keep talking about upgrading the hurricane category system. Trouble is it refers to wind speed. but when hurricanes replace their eyewall, the wind speed drops temporarily, but the whole storm increases in area, like a spinning skater opening her arms. The energy isn't lost; it goes into pushing the waves of the ocean across a much larger surface area. We now know that tends to result in greater storm surge.
TL;DR: when a cat 5 drops to cat 3 just before landfall watch out - the wind speed may have dropped, but the storm surge could be huge, deadly & destructive.

so are there any way to enhance the hurricane classification system to account for these factors?

@@ShagishiDonis thank you. Personally, alcohol became a problem for me when I started abusing it and drinking daily. I damaged my nerve system at the age of 24 and developed seizures during my withdrawals, to the point where I’d be hospitalized and monitored due to being at risk of passing. I’m on a better path now! I start school on the 9th and ready to move onto bigger and better things.

Katrina was a Cat 5 while still at sea. It was a strong Cat 3 when it made landfall. Gulfport, MS was hit a lot harder in 1969 by Hurricane Camille, which was a Cat 5 when it arrived.

Well the 175 to 180 gusts say other wise. I was there during the storm also it was a cat5 or max cat 4 when it hit land. The storm also lasted 10x longer than Camile. Yes she was the strongest hit and only lasted a few hours. katrina Lasted 14 to 18 hours. Everything I owned was gone except my car and the items in the trunk. The people who made this was at the Beurivage Casino parking Garage. It went to the 3rd or 4th floor of the garage which was 36 feet of storm surge. 30 to 50 feet waves ect. It was not fun to be in and it was deadly to who stayed near the coast. I saw the whole southern Mississippi completely destroyed and the coast line was completely destroyed and Casinos were move to land from the waters side of the beach. More than 3 football fields away from the original area it was at. It was a horrifying and tragic sight to see after the storm slowed down enough to go see what happened. The amount dead was staggering for me and I saw dead bodies. All people who go through these storms have it extremely hard and I know te pain first hand.

there tends to be a whole crew. like 3-6 people, multiple cameras to film the storm, and the documentarian.

Hey, don't feel bad, my dad and I were in a max of 15 feet of water to 3 to 5 feet, in the intercostal waterway, wind kicked up from nesr zero in the morning and then to 35mph , waves 3 to 5 feet , but rolling from the various ridges, and just pounding and the boat wasn't that big, heavy tri hull, and I wss like if we go down, the way the water was there was a serious chance that even with a life vest and ammount of swimming that would have made us tired, 70% chance we would have both drown.. and I was a pretty good swimmer at that age. But it was rough.. we obviously lived.. but it was only for skilled boaters and swimmers who love misery .. ya know.. so on those lakes. Lucky to live.
