Love it! Jesse Glover was my first sifu when I was 12 till I was around 18 as he was my neighbor. College came along and interrupted that momentum. I understand and appreciate what Sifu Tommy is getting at. I like to drill my guys on the fundamental Wing Chun/JKD moves and I am inspired by Sifu here. His methodology of teaching and progressing is super cool. I'm 57 now and since the time I was 26, Taky Kimura has been my Sigung. I feel blessed to have learned the JKD/Wing Chun concepts which has helped keep me young and fit all these years.
Nicely made Karim. Not for everyone. I can see why it’s hard to sell from commercial perspective. It’s easier to sell Savate, BJJ, Kali under one roof and call it JKD. What a concept. Sorry I couldn’t resist. Reason TC does well is the facts the guy is a walking proof of his training. Moving away form accumulation of techniques appeals to a special crowd. BL allegedly had said his method wasn’t for everyone.
Thank you for watching Pascal and sharing your viewpoint. Yes, if Bruce lee was less charming, not an actor and still alive today, I believe we would have JKD the way Tommy is trying to teach it....but because everyone wants to claim Bruce as their own and find reletion to him as well as make money of his name ...we have a huge clusterfuc$ of a mess right now. Thankfully Tommy and Thomas Marx (who has a YT channel btw) are doing their best to clean it up!!! feel free to share, KR, Karim
Very interesting what he said about the apple core, but I’d like to remind you that without a healthy core, the apple wouldn’t grow in the first place.
@@KarimDavisFilms Wing Chun doesn’t need a place in JKD. Wing Chun is entirely separate. However, if the individual finds value in parts of an art and can make it work, it would have a place in that persons JKD. That was the beauty of the philosophy behind JKD, basically having no rules as rules and accepting all possibilities as possible
@@truthhurts1884 I spoke to Tommy about this on multiple occasions, he said that this is probably the most common misconception regarding JKD, also Thomas Marx confirmed this. (His channel even has two videos talking against this point and giving reasons as to why) I hope to touch on these points more extensively in the documentary I am planning in 2023 and I will use your comment as part of the integrated Q & A if you don't mind so we can have both Thommy and Thomas share their thoughts on it. Btw, if you personally are interested in Wing Chun please feel free to check out the movie I made with Michael Mehle recently, he is the most decorated Gary Lam lineage practitioner in Europe (and also seems to agree with how Thomas has presented the JKD / WC discussion.) Wishing you a great rest of your weekend my friend ... I am off to work 😊
Again anther great film by Mr Karim Davis and Mr Paul Morrow on the way Jeet kune do should be taught Simple / Direct / and Efficent by the best Sifu Tommy Carruthers and his intercepting fist students
Tommy I'll tell you right now: You are the best thing since Bruce. You are the real deal. Anyone who knows jack shit about real fighting - forget about competition ''rules'' - knows that this works in real life. What more can I say? There IS nothing else to say: Tommy is the word and the word is Tommy. Never mind a pilgrimage to Seattle, I gotta get my self to Glasgow if only to see the heir to the Bruce Lee throne. Tommy if you are reading this a ''hi'' would be nice. I'm a southpaw too, I get it, but orthodox people don't because for them everything you do is the wrong way round? Can I blunt? Thick people cannot be good fighters, it needs intelligence - not just brute force. Look at Bruce or Muhammad Ali. Yes: intelligence is what makes the difference. Tommy is in the same class.
I love Tommy’s move set and philosophy. Can I ask an honest question regarding his experience in combat? Not ring fighting I see he’s not geared for it, but how often has he used this in real life? I know it works, and I can see his skill, I’m just curious.
So to be honest I have never seen him attack or be attacked by someone for real, but I have had witnesses (fellow training partners) describe two occasions in particular in which they saw him defend himself in recent years. The most recent was around 5 years ago in Italy, Thomas Marx witnessed it, he was with Tommy doing a seminar that day so best ask Thomas for the exact details. Thomas does a livestream on YT every 2 weeks that you can check out, there you can ask him about it. Most eye witnesses stories seemed to line up, even people that stop training JKD remain loyal to their account of what happened on those days. Everything else I have heard are stories either Tommy or Tommy’s friends have talked about so that might not be fair to push them to the front of the line. What a lot of people don’t know is that he is also very passionate about boxing and has two books out called “the sweet science of boxing” vol 1 + 2. When I trained in Glasgow I found out that on his day off from JKD he would teach boxing as a side gig, I think it was a “boxing for youth” project but that was 5-6 years ago so I can’t remember 100% You can also write Tommy on FB and ask him, he might take a while to answer but I think it’s the best way to go about it. Other than that all I can tell you is that compared to all other athletes I have trained with throughout the world (Olympians & Amateur fighters included) he is constantly in great shape and has a very simplistic philosophy towards protecting yourself. One thing I will give him credit for is that in a 2 hour training period he remains very explosive throughout, I have never seen him slow down, but keep in mind that I train for triathlons so I might just be being biased here cause I tend to note something like this down. Last but not least, he is from the east side of Glasgow (I’m from the south) his area used to have a fair amount of crime especially in the party scene. Before I went to train with Tommy for the first time I would ask all the people who worked in security and as bouncers I knew if they ever heard of him, about half did, but no one knew to much about him other that he was constantly training and quiet and friendly, so again not really that much to go by story or proof wise. Hope it helps and that you get to train with him one day so you can see for yourself. Thanks for watching! Karim
I used to train Thai and kickboxing as a child (2years) and have made a video with the warrior kickboxing club in Ethiopia, they are my go to gym when ever I am there.... so imo I would say it depends, if you have been training for 6 months in one style and someone else has been training in the other style for 6 months I would say it comes down to envoirment.... I can kind of hold my own in thai / kickboxing with JKD footmovement but I must abide by the rules of sparring / competition. So I can't even use JKD tools (eyejabs, groin strikes) there or they will throw me out on my behind. Jkd training with Tommy is strictly geared towards a self defense situation, when I started I felt a little bit cumbersome and un - agile at first when using grappling or regular Thai boxing f.e. compared to those who had done the jkd drills for months longer than me. Hope that answers your question somewhat at least. Please feel free to check out my other martial arts videos BJJ, Kendo, wing Chun aso. Have a great day 😊

That low to high near the end of the vid without a trap can be countered by the partners same defending hand. That’s why you trap. You lock him down and lock his structure. If he just leaves his hand down, yes you can finger strike his eyes, but there’s no garauntee he won’t wedge punch back against that second attack if he has good reflexes that he can detect you are changing from low to high. You also have given him a tactile reference point where he can feel the intent of the next strike. Trapping doesn’t give him the option 🤷🏻♂️
