  • When Emma Twyford powered, crimped and screamed her way to the top of The Big Bang at Lower Pen Trwyn, she ended a three-year battle and entered British climbing’s history books as the first British woman to break the 9a barrier.
    This 30-minute film by filmmaker David Petts of Volo Digital is her story. It follows Emma Twyford's three-year battle to climb The Big Bang at Lower Pen Trwyn in North Wales.
    Graded 9a, The Big Bang is one of the UK's hardest climbs and had only previously been climbed twice in its 23-year history. David Petts follows Emma's journey to success, capturing epic footage on The Big Issue (E9) in Pembroke, Mind Control (8c) in Oliana, Spain and big walling in the Dolomites.
    This Volo Digital film for BMC TV won Best Climbing Film at Kendal Mountain Festival in November 2019.

    Just want to say thank you to everyone who has commented so far. Thank you for all your support and for the critiques in some areas. I am still super proud of this film even two years after its premier and Kendal Mountain Festival. Are there things I would change now I'm hiensight? Of course there are! Can I do anything to change it now? No. I started this journey of this film nearly 5 years ago. From that time to now my journey as a storyteller has been crazy. I watch this film with a level of fondness as it reminds me of how I used to tell a story. I had some fantastic mentors help me on this project who brought it to life at the last moment. I am forever grateful to them, the sponsors of the film and of course to Emma. That is the feeling I will always have with this film. Enjoy it for what it is, not what it could have been. And if your expectations haven't been met, you can't please everyone in life, especially in the context of creation. We all have the capacity to tell a story our own way. Just appreciate that some people's visions don't align with your own and celebrate the fantastic achievements instead.

    Very motivating as I am years deep into my first 8b+/14a FA route after 47 years in the sport. The connection that Neil talks about is universal to such longhand projects. I so look forward to the reunion with my "old friend" this spring.

    Jesus Jerry what happened to you and Ben?.... all old like me...LOL.... back in the 90's when all my climbing mates watched your Video over and over and over again - clubbing, cellars, font, campus etc..........The Real Thing was the best climbing video of the 90's.....man it was like "gospel" to us.... Aussie Boulderer/climber.... You and Ben and Malc made us so psyched, one of my mates became obsessed with Broccoli because of Malc. And also Rich Heap lived at my house for a few months, and also many other famous climbers.....And I was best mates with one of your Aussie mates - Gav Portier - He literally moved to Sheffield because of the Real Thing - and became mates with you.......

    @darkotp7108 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    yes, its really easy to be a pro climber when you have 10ours a day job in front of the computer 6 times a week..
    but when you are route setter is sooo so hard be a good climber.
    that's why all the 9b climbers work full time jobs at the ofice, or kitchens or hospitals...
    because be a route setter and pro climber is almost imposible..

    Was looking forward to this one since I missed the first 24h(?) release back in 20??. The interviews and story were great!
    But I gotta say, I was a bit disappointed regarding the way the route was shown or explained to the viewer.
    Not sure what went wrong here, but compared to other good climbing films, at the end of this one I had the feeling I have not much of an idea of the route. Also, it looks like the route is located at a beautiful spot, but this does't really come across either. Except for a few decent drone shots at the end, there was no moment where I was impressed by the route, the rock, the landscape, the surroundings, or the filming.
    Anyway, good job Emma!

      It was indeed 2020. This is the thing with filmmaking. I told a story my way but that necessarily doesn't match up to everyone's expectations. I told Emma's story, her accomplishments in a three year span. It wasn't a case of rocking up and filming a send. It was a much more involved process. In those times you see what is most important and that is that character who's showing you the story. The ups, the downs, the moments in-between. In that time you make certain decisions that people may not agree with but you do it, because your making a film not just for yourself, by yourself, it's this huge machine with people getting involved from all over to help the vision come to life. And then you have to take into account the deliverable itself. How long should it be? What audience am I communicating with? I chose to compile 3 years worth of filming into 27minute film that can communicate with people who may not understand what climbing is or how hard it is. So with that as a premise, what is important? The character and thier story. Sorry if that didn't meet your expectations.

    Very nice movie. Thanks. But I can hardly understand if you are talking about traditions and history, ethics, etc. and then trying the route via top roping.... and using an extension device for clipping, or preclipping the first bold. Yes, times have changed a lot. Today all of this is presented as normal style.... Have a nice day.

    looks like it was chewing her fingers up that is very painful and why do they use twin ropes in the UK all the time is it just for safety or what or due to the gear strength and placement on some routes

    • @outdoorvertical
      @outdoorvertical 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mainly, its to reduce rope drag as many trad routes don't follow a straight up line.
