      @Kostas the shark Whats funny is while the Japanese won on the sea, the Russians won on land. By the latter part of the war, the Japanese land army in Manchuria was outnumbered, out-gunned, and low on ammunition. The only thing that saved them was how over-cautious general Kuropatkin was. And that Tsar Nicholas 2, so humiliated by Tsushima, sueing for peace

    "The samurai may be gone, but their spirit never died."
    Not least in how to Japanese media, samurai may be their equivalent to cowboys in the US (and the Warring States period is as popular among their filmmakers as the Wild West in the US). And of course Samurai or Shogun is a popular element in Japanese restaurant names in the West.

      The armies of sengoku jidai often used commoner conscripts to swell the ranks. The victors of the civil war didn't trust large bodies of armed men to stick around. The landowners can keep a retinue around but not recruit large amounts of dudes or start getting artillery and firearms.

    • @95bekirable
      @95bekirable 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      America never had the intention of making Japan modern, they just wanted Japan to open its border for trade, without limitation, which was a negative thing for the economy of a non-industrial country like Japan.
      America probably never predicted that Japan could develop itself, the Russian defeat at the Russo-Japanese war was a shock for western nations, because up untill that point Westerners believed that no non-european nation could develop enough to contest with western powers.

    Sometimes I like to think that Pearl Harbor wasn't a surprise attack, because Matthew Perry opened Japan through force. See if he didn't go to Japan, there would be no Imperial Japan. No Imperial Japan, no attack on Pearl Harbor. Thus *technically* Pearl Harbor was not a surprise attack, just unfinished business.

    Nice animation! But Saigo never used swords. He had a serious injury in the shoulder when a young kid, and after this he was not able to practice and use swords.
