Fun fact: Win+D and Win+M actually do different things!
Win+D brings the "desktop" (explorer) to the front of all other windows - but it doesn't minimise other windows. They're just behind the desktop.
Win+M minimises all windows, and just so happens to NOT minimise explorer (since.. you can't do that), leaving you at the desktop by chance.
The inverse of Win+M is Win+Shift+M, which restores all minimised windows.

    • @TheSwiftFalcon
      @TheSwiftFalcon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

Also, Windows+D does actually toggle when you hit it another time.

    • @Bunny99s
      @Bunny99s 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Win+D does minimize all windows just like Win+M. However like TheSwiftFalcon said Win+D actually toggles unless you open another window.
Some time ago I've written a small command line tool to examine and manipulate windows (actual windows, not the operating system ^^). It had quite a few useful commands. I can search for a window by title or the window class name. It had an "info" command which printed out all sorts of state information of a window. When a window is minimized the window position is set to -32000, -32000 and the size is also reported as 160, 28. This is true for all windows that got minimized, no matter if I use the minimize button, Win+D or Win+M
So the actual difference is that Win+M just minimizes while Win+Shift+M just restores the windows and Win+D is essentially both just as a toggle.

My most used shortcut is probably Ctrl + C (both as break and copy), but my favourite is the F10 'Boss key'. You used to press it whenever you were playing videogames instead of working, and the boss comes over to your desk. It would usually exit the game immediately, or bring up a fake DOS prompt or text editor, or something like that. it isn't very common these days.

Another of my favorites is the “back” key for window management. I *LOVE* to use overlapping windows and make heavy use of the Z axis on my desktop. When I was using a Sun workstation, the keyboard had an unlabeled key. I defined it to perform the “back” action of the window manager. With it, I could point the mouse at an unwanted window and press the “back” key, and the window would go behind anything it was interfering with. It’s unfortunate that keyboards don’t have a dedicated key to do this.

I was thinking the ctrl z & ctrl c & ctrl v & ctrl s editor-suite. Then that one guy mentioned a chrome specific shortcut to open closed tabs, which reminded me of the ones I actually use more than the editor ones.
In fact I use them so often I bound mouse buttons to do them directly (which was why I dont think of them as shortcut-combinationss as opposed to function-keys).
This suite is [ctrl tab & ctrl shift tab (next/prev tab), ctrl w (close tab), f5 (refresh, optionally with ctrl to refresh harder), middle mouse (open link (new tab))]
I bound them to [sense up/down, thumb+middle mouse, thumb+forward (only uses thumb to click both at once), middle mouse (duh)] respectively.
And I dont think this is a shortcut, but rather some nifty logitech thing, but I also bound the forward/backward keys (thumb buttons found just above the thumbs resting position) to chromes "forward/backwards" functionality. On a related note, "thumb" is a button at tip of thumbs resting position, I bound to use as an alt-style+key to change profile while it is held.
With hundreds of tabs split over 7 windows those keys are all lifesavers for my productivity. And the shortcuts themselves are too. Particularly as chrome can't display more than a very tiny small handful of tabs at once, so to access the majority of them I *NEED* to use the "next/prev/close tab" shortcuts. Literally no other option.

0:12 "I thought that was windows+M" LOL I love that you knew an alternative. I know the difference between those 2 shortcuts on my windows 10 PC, but I can see why it's confused...
The one I would suggest for this video is ctrl+shift+escape. There's no need to bring up the ctrl+alt+delete menu or to right click on the taskbar (that's especially important if
there's a fullscreen app/game that has crashed that also covers the taskbar and desktop even when pressing windows key) to open task manager
It's also useful if you care to watch cpu/memory usage, manage running programs or if you know a program will run better on higher priority (even these days with multiple cores it can occasionally be an issue) or if your mouse is wrecked - I've used it many many times over many years, it's quite convenient
Also yes alt+tab is awesome but I'd rather suggest something a bit less obvious!

Not necessarily my favourite shortcut keys, but a couple of useful Windows key combos that I discovered by myself and haven't seen mentioned elsewhere are ctrl+home and ctrl+end, to take you to the start of end of an input field (as opposed to the start or end of the current line of text in that field). They can be combined with Shift to select to the start or end of the field, as you'd expect.
What might be my actual favourite is from a plugin for Vim (a program you could describe as an accumulation of shortcut keys). With the easymotion plugin you cab type \\w and it will label the start of every word on the screen with a letter combination that will take the cursor straight to that word. That might sound strange, but if you prefer to keep your hands on the keyboard and off the mouse (or if you're editing through an interface without mouse support such as ssh) it's a real godsend.

I program my own shortcuts. So most of those are "my favourite". To name a couple I use _a lot,_ RAlt+P opens a small terminal prompt at the top of the screen from which I can run anything in PATH. Very useful. I also use RAlt+RShift+Enter a lot, which opens a full terminal.

      In Eclipse, try also:
CTRL+7 when selecting code, to comment (love it)
SHIFT+TAB when selecting code, to un-indent (also love it)
CTRL+SHIFT+A, then drag and select more lines, then you can write the same text on multiple lines (saves me every time I have to use a switch)

Ctrl + Shift + Alt + E on Photoshop collapses everything that's visible onto the selected layer. Not only do I use it a lot, but I find it kind of fun to do and say out loud because of how ridiculous it is. Bonus points for doing it with only the left hand

1:30 He talks about ctrl + r which searches in bash command history.
Thing is, there's nothing like that in zsh - just start typing the start and hit arrows to go into history of commands you used that started like that. Really helpful, since I use ssh a lot so I always type ss arrow up and I have just the command I want, no need for ctrl + r

My favorite: fourth mouse button set to double click! ;)
Apart from the obvious (Ctrl-A/X/C/V/Z/S), as a programmer I use Ctrl-D to duplicate a line and Ctrl-T to move a line upwards uite often. Don't know which editor I picked that up with, but now I set it on every editor/IDE I use.

ctrl+shift+escape. Task Manager without the intermediate screen, and with two fingers.

I love all the shortcuts. Windows: Alt + up moves up one level of the current directory. Alt + left goes back to previous folder and Alt + right goes forward. Alt + PrintScreen will put your current application screen into clipboard (saving you from having to trim out extraneous details later). Windows left or right snaps your window to the side. windows + up maximizes, while windows + down does exit fullscreen / minimize.
Windows + number will open the application corresponding to that position on the taskbar. If excel is the third application on your taskbar, Windows + 3 will open it.
I didn't know about ctrl shift t. I must share this with the world.

Alt + arrow key up or down. It grabs the current line in vscode and moves it one line up or down. I think most of other popular code editors have that as well, just a bit different key binding.

Difference between Win + M and Win + D. Latter is reversible. Hit once and you get desktop, hit again and you get everything back. Also thanks for mentioning Win + E. Gonna definitely use it a lot.
