    Why would you limit tremendously your application choices by choosing Mac or Linux?
    I mean if you only do certain tasks they're fine, but I have used about 5000 different programs on Windows in number of years for thousands of different tasks.
    Some of the obscure stuff just don't work with Macs or Linux, like BMW INPA, Progman emulators etc.

    • @SamAndrew27
      @SamAndrew27 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ...yes, but "better quality" machines come with more management/admin headaches that Chromebooks do not since they use a stripped down Linux OS. For a school SysAdmin they are a perfect solution (or as close to one as is currently available). Cheap, easy to deploy, centrally managed, no sensitive data cached on local storage. Admin'ing Windows laptops would be a nightmare in a school, plus overkill. Mac would be too expensive and have similar headaches. Chromebooks are quite limited, but fit the role of *grade-school student issued machine* quite well.

  • @lohphat
    @lohphat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    The Mac is a closed system. If you are looking for an appliance with little need for backward compatibility, then go for it. Apple is a h/w AND software monopoly. You get what they give you.
    Windows is h/w interchange friendly (e.g. state of the art video cards, cpu, ram, drive capacity, etc.) all can be purpose built without having to buy a new system just to upgrade the video h/w.
    Linux suffers from h/w support lag. I find it easier to run Linux (any flavor) in a VM so that it's h/w independent and can move it from machine to machine.
    So I will stick to PCs as I can get the best of h/w support, gaming, and whatever Linux I want to run -- concurrently.

    • @jordanzish
      @jordanzish 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've really never had any huge compatibility issues with Linux. Figuring out the pulseaudio+alsa clusterfuck is annoying as a beginner but other than that, I've run Linux as my primary OS for over a year in the past with no major issues. That's not to say that it's easy and everybody should do it, but setting up and adjusting to living with multiple distros did make me a better computer user in general, even now that I've switched back to using mainly Windows.

    • @lohphat
      @lohphat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Analogy: You shouldn't have to invest that much energy becoming a mechanic just to drive a car.
      Year, and Years of waiting for nVidia/ATI driver support on latest hardware, RAID controllers, etc. Windows would always have drivers for new h/w.
      That's why I gave up and just use vmware so that I can seemlesly move linux VMs between laptops, desktops, and enterprise server farms.

    • @turkyandgravy
      @turkyandgravy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Diego Sandoval I would argue that a bleeding edge distro would be better for newer hardware. Newer drivers like the new AMDGPU driver are only available via bleeding edge distros with the latest kernel, whereas a distro like Linux Mint might not even run on an RX 480 without an upstream kernel.

    Is a Ferrari 599 a bad car cause it has terrible off road performance ??

      Not really. The right question is "Do you want to support a company that's as notorious for employing lock-in strategies in every single aspect of their business, as Apple?".
      I wouldn't buy their stuff if there was any kind of alternative at all.

    • @WorBlux

      Cygwin is nice when you need it, but it's not a first-class citizen on windows by any means. It also outclasses both native attempts at POSIX on windows (The NT subsystem, and SFU). Their current attitude is if you need it run it on a VM in the cloud.
      POSIX has seen updates in 2001, 2004 and 2008.
      Apple, Microsoft, or the Linux Foundation. Which of these three were a defendant in an antitrust lawsuit again?

    OK, Apple is a bad company, but Microsoft is too. Now, forgetting silly things like brand loyalty to the companies who make the products, I'll continue.
    For me, I wouldn't use a mac for two main reasons:
    1) low value for money. A computer is an expensive piece of equipment; when I'm buying one, I want my money to be going as far as it possibly can. If I buy a mac, there's no way that will be the case.
    2) low compatibility. I want to be able to run anything I need to run and almost all software is made for windows; sure, some software is made to work on mac too, an even smaller amount only works on mac, but for the most part, anything I want to run will run on windows and quite often only windows.
    Reason 2 is also why I don't use linux as my main OS, though I do have it as a secondary OS.

  • @thecassman
    @thecassman 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I think, in summary, it depends on what you're actually doing (As Prof. Brailsford said)...
    I'm a developer and for me compatibility is paramount. In the industry i work in, worldwide, well over 95% of the systems are Windows based and it's important that our software integrates seamlessly into that environment. Producing the software on any other environment would give us no benefits at all, and certainly, producing the software to be compatible on any other environment would be a complete waste of time and effort. There's absolutely no way the industry as a whole will move away from Windows so that's unlikely to change for us too.
    Saying that, had i been a graphical designer then i'd have gone with a Mac...!

    The main reason I dislike Mac is that I actually use keyboard shortcuts a lot, and muscle memory just completely screws me over on that one.
    Obviously, once you know the correct key, it's simple to do. But sheer force of habit has me getting frustrating and wondering why ctrl+a isn't working before I remember that I need..that one key that I don't know the name of. You know, the one with something that looks like a four leaf clover?
    (There might be other annoying things, but I don't really mess around with Macs often enough to know.)

    • @shadebug

      +KoyasuNoBara You know, those commands are actually the reason why some might say that macs are best for the command line. Traditionally copying and pasting on a PC as opposed to a mac has always been a chore because ctrl-c is the break command to stop something running, not the copy command. Apple spotted this problem very early on and decided to leave ctrl for the command line and create a new button for the gui

      Of course, you could just right click your mouse to paste into the command line on your PC if you enable quickedit mode in the options... frankly, if your objection was my main objection to command line on the PC, I'd consider it to be perfection incarnate.

    I always had trouble with stability on all my windows laptops. Even with windows 7 I've had numerous blue screen due to the fact that digital audio workstations are stereotypically unstable programs. After switching to a macbook pro less than a year ago I only experienced one true software freeze on logic pro x, I was easily able to force quit it and reboot the program without messing anything up on the inside. My last laptop had one or two blue screens that eventually damaged the software drivers resulting in a slow, unstable, and even unusable features version of windows 7. I still want to get a separate computer for gaming and maybe try out project spark.

    For a channel dedicated to explaining computer science concepts in a digestible and entertaining format, I really feel like there was a pretty large opportunity missed here. The last few bits at the end started heading towards what I was expecting to see out of a video like this, laying out how traditionally neither Mac OS or Windows were UNIX-like environments, how they were both proprietary and incompatible with Linux world. Then, NeXTSTEP allowed Apple to make that transition, essentially making OS X a hot-rodded, proprietary Linux distro with a bunch of hardware-specific bells and whistles, while Windows has stayed with its NT File System since (before Android and Raspberry Pi and stuff) the consumer culture basically dictated that you only ever needed to write software for Windows anyway. I imagine the video also could have gone into BIOS vs EFI, Microsoft's weird recent shift towards Apple's model, Apple's obsession with proprietary ports, all sorts of stuff..

      You probably meant to say "Unix world". "Linux world" implies that GNU/Linux is the progenitor of that "world' when it is merely one of its many descendants. As for the Mac's Unix credentials, those did not start with NeXT. High end Macs were running Apple's own Unix system called A/UX already in 1988, which was based on AT&T's SysV and thus closer to the original Unix. Likewise, Microsoft had its own Unix system, too, called Xenix, which unfortunately they scrapped in favour of what would become the Windows OS (as opposed to the Windows GUI running atop DOS). Then there was also MachTen, a BSD system based on the Mach kernel which could run on all Macs as a VM under the Mac operation system with seamless integration between the two, including an X11 server for Unix only applications.

      Well i think you'll find that im not devaluing mac OS, i actually think its syntax is way more intuitive and easier than windows, im devaluing the ridiculously overpriced hardware. YES macs have fast SSDs but if you were really that bothered then you would just buy a couple of them, put them in RAID 0 and use them as external storage and boot of that - its not hard, or better still, buy an m.2 and fit it directly onto the motherboard.

    • @JamEngulfer
      @JamEngulfer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once again, I couldn't find a laptop that matched the specifications of a MacBook that cost hundreds of pounds less. MacBooks already have an SSD that uses PCIe. That's the faster storage I mentioned. I still don't think the hardware (Laptop at least) is very overpriced. If you can find a laptop that matches the specs and is sold new for 60% cheaper, I'll be interested to hear about it.

    What is the problem with people with this whole mac vs PC thing... People use whatever they want, like 99.9% of the users can do everything they need to on any computer anyway. Macs aren't any more relatively expensive than PCs, Apple just only makes products in the premium category. Saying that macs are expensive may be true in the sense that they cost a lot of money, but expensive PCs cost a lot of money too, for God's sake. Shut up and let people shove their money wherever they want to.

      ***** Just because the screen has a greater resolution, does not make the whole machine better. The baseline macbook pro retina is around a grand in english money, only the top model has a dedicated gpu. It is a GT750m.... for the same price as the base model with i5 dual core, intel integrated gpu, 13.3 screen, 8gb ddr3l and 128gb ssd you can get the dell inspiron 15 7537 with i7 dual core, 15.6 screen, 16gb ddr3l, 1tb sshd, and intel integrated/GT750m hybrid graphics. so... ya there you go. The ONLY thing you have to step down on is the screen resolution, and at 15" a 1080p display is fine. Oh and did I mention the dell is also touchscreen?

    • @LozDawney
      @LozDawney 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** That dell is also aluminum-clad... just like the macbook....

    • @brooped
      @brooped 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      LozDawney What you may get for the same money is more computational power. Even is it's aluminum-clad, it's not the same build quality. Also, you can't just say that the screen is fine so that doesn't matter. It's not nearly the same as the retina screen on the Macs, it may be completely fine and all, but it's still not nearly the same. Nearly all arguments from people who say that Macs are expensive play down the value of the build, the screen, the support, the battery, and most stuff like that that's not towards computational power. It may not have the same performance under the hood, but there's plenty more elements that bring value other than that too. Think open-minded for once and you'll see. I'm no Apple fanboy, I use OS X and Windows equally much and both can do things the other can't. But objectively thinking, there's a lot more to computers than performance, and most people are willing to pay for those things. You can keep showing links to laptops with more power for less money, or you can just think about it and realize that some people may value different things than you, and that's why Apple products are well worth the money. They're beautiful to look and Macs are almost as powerful as Linux if you want it to be, but you lose some of that performance. Then again, go buy an arguably less beautiful custom PC thing if all you want is power, that's just as fine. You people just don't get it, do you...

    Windows for gaming (because of compatibility and hardware customization) Mac for everything else. Windows 8 is appalling it is the worst excuse for an OS ever, its like something you would find on a child's pretend phone. Windows 7 is cluttered and annoying, everytime i use it i am guaranteed to get 'this program is not responding' and it pisses me off so much. I have owned 2 macbooks and they both still work as good as new and i have never had to fix them. Mac OS X is easy to use and clean. Sure they are way more expensive, but it is definitely worth it. I am only speaking from a laptop point of view, i hate desktops as i hate sitting at desks but thats me. As for gaming, any games that are for mac run on my macbook but there isn't enough compatibility/choice, thats why i have bootcamp just for games that only run on windows, and i rarely use it because windows pisses me off as it is so slow. - MY OPINION

  • @video99couk
    @video99couk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use both, so don't have a particular axe to grind. I find that the Windows file manager is more powerful, for example for sorting files based on various attributes such as running time, size etc. Also I find Mac's networking is lumpy when connecting to non-Mac file shares for example (not just Windows ones). So on balance, Windows tends to get the job done more quickly.

    It depends. Mac is all around, simple, and fancy, but they're expensive and don't work as well with things like gaming. PCs are great for coding, gaming, and programs, but might not be as good for all levels of ability like the Mac is. I personally prefer Mac because the OS is smooth and well rounded, but if I were gaming I'd DEFINITELY choose Windows. Like the guy at 0:40 said, whatever's appropriate.

And if you managed to put a Cocoa alternative like GNUstep on top of the GNU/Darwin or FreeBSD/Darwin stack you may retain some OS X compatibility. Also OS X is a BSD descendent (genetic UNIX,) POSIX compliant (functional UNIX) and passed the Single UNIX Specification certification (trademark UNIX) so it *is* a UNIX in all senses.

    Mac user here, my first system was a licensed SCO UNIX server from dads office, which got me interested. Then MSDOS came about and it felt like a consumer friendly cli solution for the home. Windows got introduced and it looked so interesting. But the Atari my sister came home with really caught my attention. And I never felt comfortable on the Win solution. Eventually WinXP got pretty close, but it was just one problem after the other, not to mention the issues with security. I got tired of it and picked OSX as the solution, great design, great for development. UNIX under the hood, GUI on top that's easy to use. And my PC frustrations went away. Never looked back. Linux for servers, OSX for the rest. Works for me, so it's worth it.

Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
    Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
    There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

      Just Another Guy oh brother another “noooo its gnu linux” loser. what difference does it make? im sure no one cares about official naming conventions. Its called linux because everyone is familiar with the nickname and it is universally used.

    • @trijezdci4588
      @trijezdci4588 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zurps The problem with your nickname argument is that it leads to nonsensical misnomers where people still use the name Linux for OSes that are not actually using the Linux kernel but only the GNU userland. Gentoo had a distro that used a BSD kernel at one point, and there are other such systems using the L4 kernel. The "L" in L4 has nothing to do with Linux.

    There is one thing I see most people seems to forget, and that is that the mac and pc are built (originally) for different tasks. PC definitely more for gaming and work, while 95% of all recording studios in the world uses macs. Why? Because the developers of the softwares (Avid, Adobe etc) favors mac, hence making music recording, graphic design running better on OSX than Windows. So it's not what you personally like that is going to run best, it's the developers of the apps and softwares that are deciding what runs best on what OS's.

    PC. because I can build repair and upgrade it myself. I don't think a PC should be a closed box that only company certified people are allowed to open. Also don't like that there are no official Mac OS VMs, so you can't really support their users without buying their expensive hardware. If I got a Mac I would definitely put Linux on it.

Anything networked related I will always choose a Linux machine (good for getting into the system and playing around, nice and easy to natively remote into). Video editing, games, office and day to day use, Windows. Would like to play with a MAC but have not found one in a skip yet (I am a student). Tablits, Android all the way, nice UNIX based system, IOS is to locked down to be useful to me.

    Windows is a mess, but it's productive, and plays games.

I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro with Intel Core i5 and it still runs at about the same speed as when I bought it. Someone I know has a colour changing keyboard for his Mac. PCs are a lot more customisable and with a little more computing power at the cost of a large amount of space whereas Macs have everything in front of you. Not trying to offend any PC users but I like Mac :)

    I started with Windows, used it for many years, and only switched to a Mac in the last two years. I'm more than aware that my retina macbook pro isn't perfect, but for what I needed it for at the time of purchase, which was audio production in a mainly mac-focussed university building, I wanted the same software at home as I had on campus. So, there we are. I've got enough experience in all three of the major operating systems so that if I had the opportunity to switch to Windows tomorrow, I would without any complaints. Maybe the keyboard layout would take a bit of getting used to again, but yeah. Macs for now, but I live in all three environments.

  • @voxlvalyx

    This is the way I look at it:
    Windows is simple where it can get away with it, but capable in all the right places.
    Mac is capable where it can get away with it, but simple in all the wrong places.
    Linux is just a tad more capable than Windows, but complicated everywhere.
    I personally use Windows (8.1 currently), because I've never run into anything I can't do on Windows, whereas with even the most consumer-friendly Linux distros (like Fedora and Ubuntu), I find myself checking Wikis and knowledgebases for info on tiny things that should be simple, like installing an application or editing certain settings. On Mac, none of the programs I use are compatible and I *hate* the UI; after five minutes with a Mac, I've got windows all over the screen and it's cluttered and horrible (mainly because I can't just plug another monitor into a Mac).
    I've used Mac OS X, Fedora, Elementary OS, Ubuntu, and most versions of Windows extensively, and I've concluded Win8.1 (soon to be replaced by Win10 though) to be the best for me. I've got a multitude of things automated on Windows, like the scripts I wrote to keep my external HDD from going to sleep and crashing my games, and things like that aren't very portable to other OSes, so I am a bit biased in that sense. I work in IT, and a lot of my friends think that just because I have a formal education and am not a technophobe that I should switch to Linux, but Linux just seems unnecessary for what I do, and it ends up hindering me with the general lack of support (though not as unsupported as Mac) and over-complication.
    Oh yeah, and for a similar or lower price as MacBook Pro, you can get an HP Elitebook Folio 9470m, which looks a lot like a MacBook Pro, but it's thinner, more powerful, and *very* enterprise-friendly.
    I guess I'd rank it so:
    Windows
    Fedora
    [Linux in general]
    Mac OS X

    • @NickWebster
      @NickWebster 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Ailuri Catbear Linux isn't very complex. If you use a distro like Linux Mint, Ubuntu, or even Antergos it's easier than Windows. Linux gets a bad rep because in the past it was harder to use and even now there are some more advanced distros like Arch Linux.
      Much like in OS X you don't even have to open your terminal once in many situations on Linux.

    • @voxlvalyx
      @voxlvalyx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I'm using it right now actually, and I like it. It does everything Windows 8.1 did, but it just feels nicer. It's got a weird thing that doesn't let you turn off the built in antivirus protection permanently, but seeing as how I don't use any real-time protection AV anyway, it doesn't bug me.I can see how it would screw others over though, because multiple AVs enabled at once can cause neither of them to work properly.

    I really love how well this video illustrates that the use of Mac/Windows/Linux is purely a personal decision based upon one's preferences and needs.
    Edit: I've used all three myself. I love all three for what they're best at. My primary system is a Mac. I use Linux (Fedora and CentOS) at work (and I love working in Linux). I'm setting up a home-built router on CentOS, and (admittedly struggling) to get Fedora running on an old desktop. And I have a Windows 7 DVD that I've just been too lazy to use to dual-boot my Mac (for Windows things that Mac & Linux can't handle).

    There are so many points that you can bring up regarding the two platforms, however I feel like most of it boils down to this:
    PCs are for people who know about and understand how to fix the technical problems that may arise from its diversity;
    Macs are for people who don't know how to fix them, or don't care-- this compounds with Mac user's obsession with aesthetics.

    Some thoughtful answers here - whatever is appropriate is right IMO.
    I spend most of my time working on AIX Unix which from a fundamentals point of view makes both Windows and OS-X look like crappy toys,but would make a pretty poor choice for personal computing. I have Macs, Windows and Linux PC's - I tend to work with Windows most because the tools I use are mostly Eclipse based and are just easier to get working & tinker with on Windows. The Mac gets the most use by the kids as its pretty hard for them to mess it up and easy enough to fix if they do - but I've tried to use it for my work and it was pretty frustrating.

    The point I'm surprised no one addressed is customization. A PC is something you can build yourself, choosing every piece of hardware individually, including which OS you want for it (unless it's MacOs, obviously). A Mac is a thing you buy as it is and can't ever change -- or even open in most cases. To me that's the real deal breaker.
