    I think Maddon was trying to maneuver his way to a victory. If he got his way, it was a win-win for him. Either he gets the umps to call a delay, which would cool off Kershaw or he gets them to call it and with the Cubs ahead after the 5th, they would have gotten the win. Mattingly understood what he was trying to do and likely called him on it. Can't really blame Maddon for trying to work the situation to his advantage. After all that, he really lost nothing by trying.

    I don't think you should be able to protest a game because of field issues, like lights and stuff like this, if you're the home team. It's your field, it's your responsibility to maintain its working order. If something happens and you lose, that's on your organization.

    • @markf.4063
      @markf.4063 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Technically the Cubs do not own Wrigley Field and the ball club has no responsibility to maintain it. That being said, the club and the field are owned by the same person but are separate entities just like the rest of his companies.

    Ive played ball in darker lighting than that, come on. Maddon worried about a few lights going out? If you can still see around the park and see the ball, you can still play. Only if you cant see the ball, then you can stop.

    • @KennyVee
      @KennyVee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, I've played in parks that have had much less lighting, and seen the ball just fine, as both a batter and a fielder.
      I think the announcers were right, that it was all gamesmanship on Madden's part. I don't hate him for it (and for the record I'm a fan of both of these clubs, and enjoy seeing both of them do well -- I count myself fortunate to have seen in my lifetime Kirk Gibson's 1988 home run and the Cubs finally winning it all after so many years), but you're absolutely right -- there was no reason to not play ball, since there was definitely enough light by which to play.

  • @CrustyCrendan
    @CrustyCrendan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    They were missing like 12 lights out of 100 there was clearly enough light to hit a ball. Plus it was at wrigley, so the cubs should be responsible for anything like that anyways. If anything the dodgers should have protested since the cubs couldn't light their field "properly"

    Dimmed lights are dangerous for the players because human retinas slow down in low light and that causes slower reaction times, but the analyst is dim in ways no amount of light can help, and probably couldn't grasp that no matter how patiently it was explained to him.

  • @davej3781
    @davej3781 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I doubt this is a protestable situation. Once the lineups are given to the umpire(s) at the start of the game, all decisions as to the suitability of the field for play, including weather and lighting conditions, are solely up to the judgment of the umpire(s). Judgment decisions can't be protested. There is nothing in the rulebook that specifies a minimum lighting level. Even with half the lights out, an MLB stadium is surely better lit than most high school and many college ballfields.

    What is a pull hitter and what is a push hitter

    • @BEATL96
      @BEATL96 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pull hitters hit the ball with an early swing, while push hitters hit with a late swing. The timing affects what part of the field the ball goes to after hitting it.

      so if you are a righty batter you pull it to left field and push to right field

    How do you protest when ur playing in ur stadium.

    • @KennyVee
      @KennyVee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think I see where you're going with this, so I'll try to provide an honest answer.
      Yes, it was a lighting failure at Wrigley Field (the Cubs' home stadium) that caused this whole situation. But the players don't control the lights. I don't know what caused it in this case, but Wrigley once lost lights because of a nearby fire -- so it could have been totally out of the team's control.
      Madden issued his protest because, especially against one of the best pitchers in the game at that time, he wanted his players to have every opportunity to read his pitches.
      His statement after the game was "I didn't like the idea that we had to play against a guy that's really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really good. You've got to see spin. You've got to be able to read everything. I did not like the fact that we had to go out and play without all the lights on." (Yes, the quote I saw truly does having him say "really" eight times.)
      The protest became a moot point, though, because the Cubs actually won this game 4-2.
      As for Kershaw, here's what he said after the game: "Obviously, I wanted it to keep going, but if they were going to wait for however long, just tell me and I’ll go sit down. I don’t know if Joe was trying to do that on purpose or what. It didn’t really affect me, but it was a good idea. It’s just one more thing to waste time. I’ve never seen a protest actually work. I mean, they won the game, so I hope they win their protest."
      One problem with that -- once the Cubs won, the protest became null and void.
      (As I said in another comment, I have no specific dog in this race. I like both of these teams, and have lived in both of these cities. I would have been just as happy with a Dodgers win in this game as I would have been with the Cubs win.)
      The protest was based on the ruling by the umpires to continue play, not based on the fact that the lights went out in the first place. Personally, I think they should have continued play sooner...there was plenty of light to see the ball (I've played in much darker fields than this -- think of your local high school baseball field, if they play night games, and the scant number of lights they have compared to MLB ballparks which are lit for TV as much as they are lit for the game itself).
      I mean...I get Joe Madden's point. If the lights were partially out when the Cubs were batting, and then came on before the Dodgers next at-bat (or maybe it was the fact that it was the bottom of the inning -- in which the Dodgers batted with more light, and now Cubs' hitters had less of it), then he saw a disadvantage. If a Cubs fielder could potentially lose a ball in the lights, maybe at that point a Dodgers fielder had less of a chance of losing a ball in the lights.
      But really...play ball. The show must go on. Tally-ho, let's just do this, sometimes life isn't fair, and all that jazz. Play ball.
      (Sorry for the long-winded reply -- I ramble sometimes).

      Joeys right hand squeeze true but works both ways both pitchers would have an advantage. Not like one team's pitcher has advantage and other does not. I say once again it is your home stadium having issues take it up with maintenance and team ownership.

    • @youarealooser
      @youarealooser 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue is that the lights went out in the middle of an inning, so if the game is played and the lights dont come back, then the Cubs have to hit in the dark one more time than the Dodgers. Thats why at the end of the video the announcers mention "this didnt happen before the start of a full inning"
