Rory Kinnear is on another level. What a truly brilliant performance as Frankenstein's Monster. His reading of this poem is nothing short of breathtaking.
'Mr. Clare: Join the dance? Vanessa: We both should. We have been unhappy long enough. Mr. Clare: No matter the consequences? Vanessa: Let us dare. Mr. Clare: And if we're rejected? Vanessa: Can we be more lonely than we are now? Mr. Clare: Then let us dare. Vanessa: And may the lost souls be found.'
"There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream... The earth, and every common sight, to me... did seem appareled in celestial light. The glory and the freshness of a dream. It is not now as it hath been of yore. Turn whereso'er I may, by night or day, the things which I have seen I now can see no more. But there's a tree, of many, one. A single field which I have looked upon. Both of them speak of something that is gone. The pansy at my feet doth the same tale repeat. Whither is fled the visionary gleam? Where is it now, the glory and the dream?" -William Wordsworth, Ode: Intimations of Immortality
Nobody has ever been able to capture in a work of fiction the realism of the evil, the darkness and the cold horror of the human being and of real life like John Logan in this masterpiece. The cold and shivering human love, love? Disguised selfishness.
I don't know if anyone else ever can recite this any better ever...his voice and accompanying his creature character made me go back to poems again, once I loved.
Kinnear's performance compels me to watch Penny Dreadful about once a year. His voice reminds me that there are those who still love the English language, with its ability to move the soul. I was born a too late...
Fleurdelys2525 He is amazing and incredibly emotional on this show... His voice is a gift from heaven, and his interpretation left me crying all my tears... Kudos !
Damn one of the greatest ending narrations ever...that last line just tugs at your heart and never lets go.. :( "Where is it now? The glory and the dream?"
His... voice is what makes this so hurtful, sad... and beautiful. Like a vine which makes you remember your lost ones. It tastes so good but makes you cry. You remember the happyness with them and the void they left in you. His voice is gentle and you know when you hear, he has a heart as big as lake. Filled with sadness. *sigs*
there will never be a more perfect season of any show such as season 1 of Penny Dreadful. I go back to it again and again, like visiting a house you can't live in anymore. Constant reassurance. I need it.
i just found it recently on netflix. the most beautiful and tragic of tales. 'john clare' should have existed in our world.. my heart broke over and over for him while i watched. i wanted to touch his face.. and beg him to talk of hopes, dreams, and the cruel reality of humanity. and let him know.. he was beautiful and.. yes. loved. since i was a young child and read the story of the frankenstein monster, hes held the most elevated position in my heart. no fear among men could parallel so great the despair of this poor creature.
+mortishia99 Your words are so beautifully eloquent. Just hearing John Claire's words again here, brings back the sadness I felt for him, unable to find the acceptance and the love, he so desperately needed and wanted.
John Clare does exist in this world -- I have been him, and so have many others. To feel abandoned, lost, full of rage for one's creator, the confusion of emotion, the comfort of poetry, the comfort in the dark...who has not been this man? Who has not been a monster in the eyes of another? Who has not been terrified to the point of tears and trembling? Who hasn't suffered the loss of many loved ones and friends? Who among us has never held within our being a powerful void that can never be filled? This character represented so many things I love about the dark, human depths.
Honestly the entire cast of this series was outstanding, they caught lightning in a bottle. It's a shame that Showtime weren't willing to front the cost of another season. I know it ended as intended, but the last few episodes make it clear the story needed more room to breath. If there was one show where we could get them to go back and just make an extra season, for me it would be this one. The creators deserve it.
Fantastic soundtrack, fantastic series. The themes and ideas it grappled with, it was so much more than just a Gothic horror show. But because it was a so-called genre TV show, it was often underappreciated.
I don't think Mary Shelly's original monster has ever (and I truly mean never, ever) been given more justice than this performance from Rory Kinnear. I was left in absolute awe of his devastatingly sad and soulful characterisation. It was a masterpiece. His poem extracts from Wordsworth here, rendered with such perfect character and beautifully emotive intonation. THIS is the bar for role and rendition. I don't think I'll hear or see anything better in my lifetime.
words can barely Express the way I feel each time i listen to the beauty of this poem. With every verse I fall in love with the beauty in which this character recites each breathtaking line . Thank you
Kinnear's recitation of Wordsworth made this series finale one of the best in cinematic history. This series could not have ended more perfectly. Period.
I finished season 2, I think the actor playing John Clare is the best of the show. They are all brilliant actors imo, but he steals each of his scenes.
I found this poem via penny dreadful. I still think this brief spat of a reading of the epic poem is the best I've heard. I suspect the whole poem read by this performer (RK) would have been sublime. Ah, the missed opportunities of what might, mayor could have been... :) Bugger it! Haven't we all much more PRESSING things to achieve in life. That massive bulk, we ALL support upon our backs & shoulders, of the fattest of the fat, the richest of the rich, the pyramid we are nothing less or more than the foot of, isn't going to support it's self, now is it?! if we don't comply then HOW will the elite ever manage to control us all all the time, every second of every day....oh wait, they are sweating night & day to build an answer to that . Contact trace this, vac-pass that: robo-cop, right up yer back portal! & ever more it will be: Tomorrow & tomorrow & tomorrow, all the missed opportunities :D
To my only son Anthony 31 that took his own life 13/10/2020. Gone to visit the angels but would not have left he he realised how many broken hearts he had left behind. RIP xxx until we meet again.
So sorry for the loss. Take time to grieve in your own way. And remember to breathe and if you have to scream at the top of your lungs. I helps, I lost my husband of 48 years in August of 2020. It still hurts.
I am sorry for your loss. Words are inadequate, but this poem allows one to sit in the same room with unbearable grief for a brief moment in time. I keep coming back to it, and it provides a drop of solace. I hope it does the same for you.

Immortality? Why? Because not all can imagine loss without thinking of having lots of time to enjoy things? How sad to lose fast and not have it even imagined.

Trying to understand this poem. I wonder. Was everything always without gleam? And he as a child saw more than what was there or when you grow up you see the truth about the world. There's no gleam, no beauty of a celestial light. Was everything a lie? He as kid couldn't understand how the world really is. Although there's still something on the field, a tree that reminds him of his emotions and innocent feelings as a child.
Pao Todd yes thanks a lot... but I heard so many other people and other poems ... nothing came close to Rory' s performance and emotion... or the music used it's just perfect...
Cried like a baby when I first heard Rory Kinnear recite this.
Rory Kinnear is on another level. What a truly brilliant performance as Frankenstein's Monster. His reading of this poem is nothing short of breathtaking.
Agreed on both counts. I think Penny Dreadful couldn't have possibly been better casted. Just incredible performances all around.
I’ve listened to many readings - none compare to his.
Not Frakinstiens monster, his creation. his masterpiece, his... greatness.
'Mr. Clare: Join the dance?

It's from the show, yes. You should watch it if you liked this clip. :)
P.S. Sorry for the late reply. I didn't receive any notification.

Isn’t it interesting that the most disfigured and unsightly character is the most beautiful! 🥺😭
Nobody has ever been able to capture in a work of fiction the realism of the evil, the darkness and the cold horror of the human being and of real life like John Logan in this masterpiece.
The cold and shivering human love, love? Disguised selfishness.
Probably one of the finest readings of this poem.
Carlsberg, that poem yal!
Trust me, it IS the finest among the seeming endless efforts out there..
I don't know if anyone else ever can recite this any better ever...his voice and accompanying his creature character made me go back to poems again, once I loved.
Ladies and gents, Mr. Rory Kinnear,
And the music of course
Kinnear's performance compels me to watch Penny Dreadful about once a year. His voice reminds me that there are those who still love the English language, with its ability to move the soul. I was born a too late...
No , I think you are reborn and got a glimpse of your past life .
@@tinchen8617 I've often thought the same thing, my friend--it often takes an "old soul" to recognize another.
His recitation is just breathtaking!!!
I want to die. There is no beauty left...
@@anamariawhite442 I’ll be your beauty
It's not just the reading, the music is also breathtaking
True. The poem itself is beautiful. But the music accompanying it made the final punch and shattered my heart into pieces.
Recited by the incomparable Rory Kinnear.
Fleurdelys2525 He is amazing and incredibly emotional on this show...
His voice is a gift from heaven, and his interpretation left me crying all my tears...
Kudos !
Yes!!! I can’t stop listening to this.

Breathtaking performance by Mr. Kinnear all throughout the series. Just incredible.

Such beautiful heartbreaking words. I will miss this brilliant series.

Rory Kinnear is an amazing talent! What a truly beautiful and heartbreaking interpretation of these lines from a most wonderful poem.
The pansy at my feet doth the same tale repeat!... This poem speaks volumes of the heart, and it's losses but also it's triumphs.
i wish we could have kinner recite the entire thing himself, no one else i listen to can live up to this
it is Rory Kinnear reciting it :)
i meant the entire 200 lines :)
Ahh ok, I get ya! ☺
He should read audiobooks. And poetry. Or the phone book, I really don't care. I just want to listen to him forever.
Yeah, he has an enchanting voice
A wonderful actor, all his scenes with Eva Green are incredible. What a great talent.

I just got to say that these words impact me on another level and I simply love it. I really miss Penny Dreadful and all the poetry.

I just came across this series on TV and am blown away by Mr Kinnear. Cant wait to finish watching all the series

Oh!!!! How well he reads.... I'm crying....crying and crying... I know not why....
such a beautiful "Creature"!
i am gonna miss John Clare.
One of the most underrated actors of our time.
He's well-known and loved in the UK and Ireland.
.. and may the lost souls be found..
I've never appreciated poetry. It's never done anything for me. But I think I'll remember this recitation of this poem for as long as I live.
Perfection
What a voice. No video, but I can see Vanessa's funeral in my mind and I'm sobbing.
une très grande série, des acteurs et actrices au diapason....et cette tirade à la fin...magique.....le "monstre" plus humain que les humains.
Ho, un français...
Powerful amalgamation of words, delivered by the most human of all unloved ones. Amazing post! Thank you 🤘😎
Simply wonderful
Mph, mph, mph! This man has a way with words; I could listen to him forever!
And the Abe Korzeniowki's music makes this unforgettable

Estan tan bien trabajados losp personajes que viven.
I'd love to hear Roy recite the whole poem.
that would be nice...if only he weren't dead :'(
Wait what? Rory Kinnear isn't dead!
No, no, no! We meant his dad Roy Kinnear. Not Rory! Don't freak its ok! ☺
Phewwwww! Ok, thanks ;)
Your welcome ☺
He is so beautiful
Gives me goosebumps everytime...
I was sad because it got cancelled but the ending was so perfect if i ask for more i would ruin a great show
This breaks me.....
I personally recommend playing it via HomePod or Sonos
Easier to listen/watch without the funeral scene :((
Vanessa deserved infinitely better!!!

Perhaps it's better to end on a high note then to beat a dead horse like TWD.
