  • Before you go and tell me I'm crazy, I already said the last part was to learn. This is the part that is for real. All the stuff I left out of the previous video is in this video. Do you want to know how to planish and polish your stainless trim? It's in this video. How about stainless steel passivation - you bet. Getting tiny trim tabs mounted turn your crank...click on the video and enjoy the ride.
    Oh, and smash the like and subscribe maybe. It keeps the algorithm happy.

    "That sounds like a lot of work to me so I'm not doing it..." Said the man who just invested crazy time and effort to create a trim piece from scratch :D
    Keep up the good work!

    Really enjoying watching these episodes from down here in Aistralia. I suppose I could step away from TH-cam for a bit, go the garage and work on my neglected project. Thanks for sharing what you're doing and look forward to whatever's next.

    RE: that final sanding phase to fit to the hood - in guitar building we do a similar process to fit a saddle onto an arch top guitar. Sandpaper is affixed to the arch top and the saddle is carefully worked back and forth to take the shape of the arch. Not saying it would be better, but something to consider.

    I'm an electronics man and do not have the tooling, but I've been fantasizing and daydreaming about building a few bits for my (and others?) Volvo 140's missing trim bits.

    I just put in a stock aluminum part on my hood. Pales in comparison to your part, which is a thing of beauty! What's gonna happen to the test part? Auction? Raffle? Outright sale? I probably can't afford to buy it outright but I'd place an auction bid. And spend money on a raffle in a heartbeat!

    • @ThrottleStopGarage
      @ThrottleStopGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's packed away right now with the real part so I can lose both at the same time. It will probably become garage art. Given I have the hammer forms, I can make more when I have time. I haven't tried the fit on a steel hood - don't know if it fits.

  • @Alfonsoc3po

    I use a citric acid solution for removing rust from components like calipers, engine blocks etc, some preparation is needed to protect machined surfaces, (vaseline) if the liquid is kept warm it's much more efficient, don't jump in and try it without research though!

    • @ThrottleStopGarage
      @ThrottleStopGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope it does the trick. I usually use phosphoric acid for rust removal.

    • @Alfonsoc3po
      @Alfonsoc3po 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It works really well, I use food grade stuff, it's a lot less hassle than electrolysis! Obviously not toxic being food grade so easily disposed of! I'm in the UK so rust is a real problem! A small lump of land surrounded by sea, and just for good measure....the roads are salted in the extra cold ( for us ) season!

      I did not find the original. But this one is in the "trim box" in the shelving unit at the back of the garage. There...now I've even recorded where I put it away. Doomed for sure.

    I might miss something, but what is the difference with this and an originally installed trim?

    • @ThrottleStopGarage
      @ThrottleStopGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original is a bright anodized aluminium part that is not really all that nice.

  • @ferrariguy8278
    @ferrariguy8278 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another way to go about this... TOTALLY different...(just a creative thought exercise here) would be to have made molds for CF version of the trim, sliver-surface them (mirror-chrome), and follow up with at 2K clear coat or tinted coat. Not as durable - but maybe fitting...

  • @jonsquatch
    @jonsquatch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Now that you have the replacement part and you bag it and all its accessories is the time where you hold it and say I will put it "here" so its safe and I will know where to find it... and if your like me when you set it next to the "lost" original you will wonder why that never works until you have the replacement in hand.

    what's next on your list?

    • @ThrottleStopGarage
      @ThrottleStopGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. So I've just finished a project where I could have bought the part. I'm now going to make grilles for the car that I can't buy. Similar techniques - just started to clean up the metal today.

    • @ferrariguy8278
      @ferrariguy8278 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThrottleStopGarage I wonder if one could 3D print a grill, then flame-spray the plastic (supposedly the metal will stick to paper).... polish and plate it! (gotta keep thinking of wild and crazy ways to do things right?)

    • @ThrottleStopGarage
      @ThrottleStopGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A little too large for my printer. I'll try it using a metal hammer form first. As with all these projects, it may or may not work. We'll find out.

    • @ferrariguy8278
      @ferrariguy8278 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThrottleStopGarage I'm inspired by a chrome shop video that uses a flame sprayer to rescue and fix pot metal parts with silicon bronze (wire or powder?). The parts seem to cool to the touch nearly immediately. Not a cheap tool though.
      Looking forward to seeing how you figure out the grill!
