A few years ago; (2021 I believe) I remember reading an extensive article in a beat em up magazine; interviewing the OG creator of the Double Dragon arcade game. He noted all the changes he has seen in beat em ups as well as gave praise where it was due, while also being aware of all the Double Dragon games made by others at that point. When asked if he would ever attempt to make a new Double Dragon game; he state that unless he would be able to do something new that hasn't been done in beat em ups to this point; and made sure that it works well and ends up being fun; he wouldn't bother as the genre seems to be doing well as is. He mentioned that he would attempt to somehow merge the concepts of 1 on 1 fighters into a beat em up; in a seemless functional and fun manner. That being said; I heard that he is in fact involved with THIS particular game. While I would have loved a 2D hand drawn game that looks something like SOR4; I am GLAD we are not getting yet another BOBBLE HEAD CHIBI art style and something more serious looking. At the very least; this game willl be as good as Double Dragon Gaiden or other beat em ups; but it could also end up being better or simply good in a different way; and I am all here for it.
Now that I have caught up with Top Hat's Double Dragon coverage, I'm wondering if this is the Return of Double Dragon (or Super Double Dragon) remake Arc System said they were wanting to make. Although the villain looks old enough to be the twins' dad in my original theory, his blonde ponytail and similar energy attacks to Billy and Jimmy makes me think this is Duke - the villain from SDD. I wonder if he'll be the Lees former friend like Ebinuma intended or if he has some other role (I seriously can't get over the evil dad vibes). Even the purple energy is similar to the dark duplicates of the Double Dragons in Double Dragon 2.
Here's a fun fact for those of you that didn't know.. Remember Rage of the Dragons? Well, that fighting game was going to be Double Dragon. However, the devs didn't managed to get the rights (and the green light to start making it..) so they basically made their own. Also, they're the ones that designed Angel (KoF series). From a bet they made with SNK (I don't remember the full details about it). One final note. Piko Interactive bought the Rage of the Dragons IP. Apparently, they have plans to re-release the game for modern consoles, which is going to be soon. The Steam page has the name "Rage of the Dragons NEO".
I really wanted the next 3D Double Dragon game to play like a cooperative split-screen SIFU, and is a faithful story-driven remake to the original 1987-1990 trilogy. Also I want Billy & Jimmy's classic look again, but their faces are modeled both Bruce Li and Dragon Lee.
@@ShrekFhiyona They also looked like that in the Japanese commercial of Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stones (as well as the short manga based on it). I also in fact wish that every game in the franchise used the anime versions of Billy and Jimmy, even that lame cartoon version by DIC Entertainment.
@@KenMasters. You do know that realistic look doesn't age well at best or age poorly at worst. I prefer the combination and mix of 1980, 1990s, and 2000s martial arts action movies.
river city girls 2 is getting dlc with the game grumps playing billy and jimmy (only didn’t say bimmy because that’s an actual character in the wayforward canon)
I didn't even know this was a thing - just found out. The style/graphics aren't much of a problem (it DOES look like a mobile game), but the fact it looks very, very very janky from the trailer is indeed a worry. It's a well known fact that, until proven otherwise, 3D and beat'em ups don't mix well at all.
Any chance you could cover the Knights of Valour games? Specifically, Knights of Valour Plus, Knights of Valour Superheroes and Knights of Valour 2 - Nine Dragons. They’re available on IGS Classic Arcade Collection for the Nintendo Switch. They look like quite interesting beat ‘em ups, which sadly haven’t got much attention in the past.
I’d hope to see some verticality: Platforms, ledges, stairs, cliffs, ladders, pits and objects from which you can spring an attack or better yet launch an enemy off of, or into. I’ve always thought this was a keystone to the fun factor of what sets DD apart from other brawlers. Then there’s the huge flashy anime style impact fx which take up the whole screen, that look generic and out of place for DD. The proper hallmark of a good DD IMO relies heavily on player agency over movesets set in gritty environments with somewhat over the top bosses and droves of unique but menacing (not comical) henchmen. Wasn’t the original character art inspired by FoTNS? I think THGM accurately conveys the rest of our concerns. Lastly, maybe it’s asking too much but I’d prefer my fighting game development led by a guy who’s taken at least one punch to the face before, like Kishimoto. Hopefully we don’t get the “modern audience” treatment with the studio based in Osaka. I think it’s fair to have some reservations based on what was shown.
At least it's not cel shaded like almost every beat em' up these days. I've long learned to expect nothing from a DD game and am happily surprised when one turns out well.
I agree on so many levels, this game looks like it's been in development for a while since it's coming out for xbox 1 and ps4, the transition of the game to 3d has been some hard misses, I JUST PRAY that until next year they really consider to give this game some care and polish because this trailer looks rushed and there's so many animation problems with it. I'm excited for another game but really concerned that Arc is just spitting this stuff out without having someone spearheading how beloved this franchise is.
Happy with this, though I have to say I'm not too enamored with the new K-Pop boyband Billy & Jimmy look. But hey, it runs on Unreal Engine, so OG costume mods will likely pop up days after release
Double dragon gaiden was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. I was hoping for a vastly improved sequel with graphics much closer to the arcade games.
I LOVE double dragon. Im very worried as well. I want this to be excellect.. but this art style is Not good.. This is going to come down to the game play and story. I loved DD:Neon.
On the contrary, they're tying up loose ends by integrating Rage of the Dragons as well as Madan Senki Ryukendo into the Revive title. Hence, what the Lee Brothers are wearing in this iteration.
Double Dragon have lost relevance over time. Also beat'em ups, though had some revival (pun totally intended) in the later years, aren't as mainstream as fighting games. And with Giulty Gear or Dragon Ball, Arc System Works knew they would have no problem getting high ammounts of money back. Can't be said the same of Double Dragon. In short, no surprise for me that the studio is not going to invest in this game as much as in their fighting games. Still, it doesn't look bad for meat all. Actually the opposite. But what I'm excited about is the gameplay. If Arc System Work itself is going to make this, it may be a really fun game to play.
Ima defend the franchise as much as possible. Honestly i dont mind this design; capable of being potential guest character ports. I've always wanted the Lee bros in snk or capcom games.....unless arc system got something up😳
Not sure about everybody else but I'm actually going to keep an open mind plus it actually looks promising from my point of view at least just as long it turns out better than "Double Dragon: Neon". Hopefully it'll be just as good as other interpretations such as "Super Double Dragon", "Double Dragon: Advance" and of course "Double Dragon: Gaiden".
Please do videos on the two D&D beat em ups, the bouncer, urban reign, mortal kombat shaolin monks, the scott pilgrim vs the world game, dragon's crown, & mighty morphin power rangers mega battle
I'm not a big nostalgia fan, especially when it comes to graphics. I grew up with 8 and 16-bit sprites. I don't need anymore of that. Let's move on from that, please. We have better graphics now, let's use that. Which is why I don't have a problem with the 3D models used in Revive. Modern day, let's get a modern look. Now, if you're saying the game should look like Guilty Gear Strive, I 100% agree with you on that. That would've been amazing. I think it was you who said beat'em ups generally don't work in 3D, and I tend to agree with you. 2D just works much better for the genre for whatever reason. Something like Strive, 2.5D, would be amazing for a beat'em up.
Actually my favorite double dragon games are the OpenBOR ones which r remakes of the original double dragon games with sooo many addons such as more levels and u can play as the bad guys...even wwf wrestlers! Its called (double dragon reloaded alternative crazy mode)
I seriously hope you are wrong this time. I'd loved Doulbe Dragon since the first time I played it tin the arcade back in the late 80's. It is the first franchise that got me hooked of games. I want this new game to be so good that everyone has to have it and that it starts it's own series of sequels that are just as good or better.
I'm down with the idea of a 3D beat-em up; Neon wasn't perfect, but was hella fun and the soundtrack was KICKIN'! (that's right Kickin', not Bumpin' because I'm an 80s guy) however I do think part of Neon's appeal was definitely the tongue-in-cheek self-referential sense of humor (I died at Bimmy n' Jammy - Mistranslated Mutants) and retro 80s aesthetic. Lacking those, I think this game will need to prove it in the technical department. Visually, it's kind of 'meh'. Very two generations ago. But if the combat feels good and the gameplay is decent well then that's all that matters.
Oof...all that we can really hope for at the moment is that this is early footage and gameplay and not the final product...if it's coming in 2025 then bare minimum they got 5-6 months to make it look pretty if they want to drop this thing in January. All we have is a 2025 date...and I'm finding it odd that Switch isn't mentioned given how I can literally go on to the Nintendo store on Switch and buy pretty much every Double Dragon game with ease and the Switch has a very wide install base....hell beat'em ups THRIVE on Switch imo since you can take them with you on the go.
I appreciate that you're worried rather than mindlessly hyped, but I feel we're looking at this from the wrong angle. This isn't an ArcSys game, they're just the publishers. It's a Yukes game! ArcSys' plans seems to just be to let anyone who asks go ahead and make a Double Dragon game so I don't think this game is "the future of the series" any more than Gaiden was and I bet if Secret Base asked, they could probably make a Gaiden 2. Heck, they let WayForward make River City Girls 1 & 2 while they were working on River City Saga and even put BOTH versions of Misako and Kyoko in it! They're very much just going with the flow and letting it happen. As for Yukes? They're the developers of the WWE games for the past decade plus as well as Evil Zone and EDF: Iron Rain and World Brothers, not to mention the PHENOMENAL Real Steel XBLA game and even Rumble Roses. They have a LOT of experience in terms of 3D combat games but this will be their first beat 'em up...and they also have NO sprite experience. So it makes sense they'd go with 3D models even if they do look like they came out of KOF 14. What I like is the darker, more serious tone. I enjoyed Gaiden but there were a LOT of people who did not like the look of the game. As you said, EVERYONE is doing chibi pixel art sprites! Would I have preferred sprites? Sure, if they looked more like the iPhone/Android game! But it's just nice to see Double Dragon try to be "cool" again... ...especially because Billy and Jimmy are coming to River City Girls 2 as himbos voiced by the Game Grumps...sooo...I'll take this... This game could be crap, or mid, or amazing but whatever happens? The next Double Dragon will be an entirely different beast anyway!
It'll be a shame if we do get stuck with a sub par quicky. We should get a beat em up equivalent of Street Fighter IV dang it! Combining the classic gameplay with modern graphics style.
this game gives me vibe of THE BEATDOWN on ps2 and in a good way. anw, looking at it, it doesn't look worse than DD NEON, that game was really not good looking, but had a killer soundtrack. DD GAIDEN was great but again, the art style was bad. this has a vibe of going back to DD3 arcade at least. i won't lie, i like it, it is not amazing but sure is nice, way better than the 360 only version that no one ever mentions. nah, i will buy this when it comes out.
Yeah, you hit the nail on the head. It looks cheap, and if this is how much they care about the game's visual aesthetics, I can only imagine what the gameplay is like. It looks like they just paid Arc to put their name on it not actually develop a top-tier AAA beat-em-up. Arc's name is on both Double Dragon games also. It's weird.
It seems Arc could have made it a 2d beat em up with the great anime graphics of Guilty Gear. But instead it reminds me of characters pulled out of KOF Maximum Impact. I think it has potential, but at the same time it worries me.
It looks fine i guess. I know the one complaint i keep seeing for Gaiden is the sprites, saying they look like babies or some shit. I dont get it but clearly Arcsys took that stupidity to heart.
something seems kind of off with this game. i don't really like the 3d style. it kind of seems very far from the orignals even the more recent ones seem a lot closer in style than this new one.
I say demo first to see if it has legs. Otherwise it's a blind leap of faith I don't have faith in. Not gonna lie, Billy and Jimmy looks like KOF Maximum Inpact side characters.
personally i'd prefer the same treatment that rivercity got from wayforward, this version of arcsystem reminds me of double dragon wander of dragons or final fight streetwise. if arcsystem is doing a new game it should been the neogeo fighting version of double dragon or rage of dragons not the beat'em up version
Can they just make a double dragon game again with the same amount of love that they put into double dragon neon? Literally, that game is amazing from top to bottom. Nobody asked for this game lol

Looks like the recent KOF games.
this title is exactly how I felt seeing that in-game trailer lol
Automatically, I feel like they borrowed the look for this game from Rage of the Dragon and the recent SNK fighting games.
All I wanted was Double Dragon Neon 2. That’s all I’ve wanted for years…..and this is what we get
I really wanted the next 3D Double Dragon game to play like a cooperative split-screen SIFU, and is a faithful story-driven remake to the original 1987-1990 trilogy.
Also I want Billy & Jimmy's classic look again, but their faces are modeled both Bruce Li and Dragon Lee.
I prefer their Billy Lee and Jimmy Lee appearance is based on Double Dragon 2 PC Engine.
Search Double Dragon 2 PC Engine cutscenes.
@@ShrekFhiyona
You mean the anime versions?
@@ShrekFhiyona
They also looked like that in the Japanese commercial of Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stones (as well as the short manga based on it).
I also in fact wish that every game in the franchise used the anime versions of Billy and Jimmy, even that lame cartoon version by DIC Entertainment.
@@ShrekFhiyona
But I’m yearning for a more realistic look.
Like a 1980s action movie.
@@KenMasters. You do know that realistic look doesn't age well at best or age poorly at worst.
I prefer the combination and mix of 1980, 1990s, and 2000s martial arts action movies.
I'd wish a follow up to Double Dragon Neon. We could use more Skullmagedon in our lives.
river city girls 2 is getting dlc with the game grumps playing billy and jimmy (only didn’t say bimmy because that’s an actual character in the wayforward canon)
As long they pay homage to the legendary 'Bimmy' then I'm sold.
Used to be my favorite arcade game back in the day. The sequel on the NES was a great game too. Haven't seen any good Double Dragon games since.
I noticed all the best em ups are coming back next year . This , streets of rage , golden axe , power rangers , tmnt
Another TMNT game?
Really?
@@willdiesel8431 the new TMNT is more like Hades than a beat em up.
I'm still buying it
I didn't even know this was a thing - just found out. The style/graphics aren't much of a problem (it DOES look like a mobile game), but the fact it looks very, very very janky from the trailer is indeed a worry. It's a well known fact that, until proven otherwise, 3D and beat'em ups don't mix well at all.
Looks like good ole Bimmy and Jimmy are back with a vengeance.
Super Double Dragon for SNES should be the blueprint to build on for any further Double Dragon games
No, It should Double Dragon Advance and Double Dragon 2 PC Engine.
Man I would just love a more fleshed out DD: Gaiden with loads of branching pathways, more unlockables, and SKULLMAGEDDON 😂
I was terrified when the nes version came out, it was only 1 player. Now I'm okay, since I'm used to it for over 30 years.
At least it's not cel shaded like almost every beat em' up these days. I've long learned to expect nothing from a DD game and am happily surprised when one turns out well.
I played the 2D fighting game Double Dragon as a kid/teen.. to me; it was awesome! Amon (the ninja) was my main
Hope the gameplay is as good as they claim, because aesthetically it really has that made in China mobile game vibe.
Happy with this, though I have to say I'm not too enamored with the new K-Pop boyband Billy & Jimmy look. But hey, it runs on Unreal Engine, so OG costume mods will likely pop up days after release
It’s arc system works bro game looks fire !
Hopefully it's not rushed, but I'm not so worried. I'm fine if it's not a triple A game as long as it plays well.
Double dragon gaiden was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. I was hoping for a vastly improved sequel with graphics much closer to the arcade games.
I love DD, me and my brother grew up with it.
I LOVE double dragon. Im very worried as well. I want this to be excellect.. but this art style is Not good.. This is going to come down to the game play and story. I loved DD:Neon.
I.ll give it a go
man I understand the concern, but man I want it to be good!
On the contrary, they're tying up loose ends by integrating Rage of the Dragons as well as Madan Senki Ryukendo into the Revive title. Hence, what the Lee Brothers are wearing in this iteration.
I'm happy about..when i first saw neon 😐 i was questioning it until i played it. So i won't judge it. Different art styles for different people
Double Dragon have lost relevance over time.
Hopefully the game won't have any bugs and bad camera angle, then it'll be great to play
Please do videos on the two D&D beat em ups, the bouncer, urban reign, mortal kombat shaolin monks, the scott pilgrim vs the world game, dragon's crown, & mighty morphin power rangers mega battle
I still love and play most of the games. Wish I had some one to play the arcade version of dd and dd2.
I shitty hate those new 3D models. It's like the Fatal Fury Premium of Double Dragon.
🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦
I really liked Double Dragon Neon. I was hoping for a sequel.
Did someone say Double Dragon?
Ok, now do Ultimate Double Dragen next😁
I just want Double Dragon Advance remastered.I know it got re-released recently but it was a straight port.
Billy and Jimmy haven’t looked cool since double Dragon advance Pass
Same feeling as Streets Of Rage 5, just made an amazing 2D game that looks like Guilty Gear X... don't go to 3D....do Double Dragon Neon 2 at least...
Visually, I expected more from Arc System Works.
Visually, I expect more from a high school art student.
They’re Japanese, they’re usually a generation behind graphics wise.
Let them experiment. Gaiden proved that the OH formula still works.
If there's only ONE SINGLE ATTACK BUTTON and not have the creative combos of Double Dragon Advance, I dunno I think it'll tank it.
Eh I'm happy enough the excellent fan games anyways. The SNES remake is a standout, as is the one with the wrestlers.
I understand the disappointment, but I did enjoy Double Dragon 4 quite a bit. I played it a lot more than I played Double Dragon Neon.
Really hope someone high up sees this video. I would rather see "Ultimate Double Dragon " get produced. Thats the game game i want to play.
Man we can't just get a good one like the old games
Let me put it this way. Double Dragons quality has been hit and miss as of late. Personally, I would love a Yakuza style DD game myself.
The art style reminds me of the take over
the game looks good but im concernd because of MK!
I say demo first to see if it has legs. Otherwise it's a blind leap of faith I don't have faith in. Not gonna lie, Billy and Jimmy looks like KOF Maximum Inpact side characters.
Who knows? At least Billy and Jimmy both look good.
personally i'd prefer the same treatment that rivercity got from wayforward, this version of arcsystem reminds me of double dragon wander of dragons or final fight streetwise. if arcsystem is doing a new game it should been the neogeo fighting version of double dragon or rage of dragons not the beat'em up version
Agreed. They should have gone with a 2.5D aesthetic. This looks outdated.
Can they just make a double dragon game again with the same amount of love that they put into double dragon neon? Literally, that game is amazing from top to bottom. Nobody asked for this game lol
Could it look any more generic.
Double Dragon Gaiden was a letdown and this looks like when KOF went 3D. I’m holding out for the River City Girls 2 Double Dragon dlc by WayForward🙌🏽
With the success of Ninja Turtles and SoR4 I thought for sure they would have went for a similar release, but I thought wrong
They released three games like that already….
