My NEW Favorite Method for Starting Seeds

  • In this video, I compare 2 different methods for starting tomato seeds. One is a traditional soil method that most of us are very familiar with and involves soil and trays. The second method doesn't involve soil at all. Crazy, right?
If you've seen some of my previous videos you're familiar with my love of Kratky Hydroponics. Now don't let that term scare you away...it's an extremely simple setup that doesn't require pumps, math, or any special knowledge. However, it does provide a great way for growing greens (like lettuce) indoors year-round. But what about starting seeds?
Watch the video for a side-by-side comparison of seed starting with some tomato seeds. I'm using seeds from the same package and starting them all on the same day, March 10.
    A special note:
*I did not add nutrients to the Kratky tomatoes until April 1st. To keep things fair I added the same exact nutrients to the soil block tomatoes on April 1st as well.

I have been interested in Hydroponics for many years, but only starting to try it this year. I was wondering when I should start planting and how quickly plants would grow compaired to soil grown plants. I am trying both Cratky and continues flow

Interesting! Why are the colours so different too? Curious

Thanks for watching. I'm pretty sure the color variation is from a lack of nutrients in the Kratky system. I was so worried about trying to keep everything "equal" for the comparison that I failed to take into consideration the amount of growth in the Kratky tomatoes. They needed more since they were bigger. They're still doing great, but I have since increased their nutrients.
