Tales From the Mutiny
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 8 ม.ค. 2015
After selling *almost* everything and traveling full-time in an RV for 4 years, we decided to add another chapter to our lives and bought a small farm in SW Colorado. Follow along as we learn to grow our own food, support local farmers and take in random rescue animals. We currently have a rescue donkey, burro, goat, mini-horse, 2 pot-belly pigs, a turkey hen, a dozen chickens, 3 dogs, and 4 cats...whew.
DIY Worm Casting Nutrient Solution for Kratky Hydroponics
Ever since I learned about the Kratky Method of Hydroponics, I've wanted to find a way to use natural and organic inputs to make a homemade nutrient solution to grow my own food.
I have been doing vermicompost (worm farming) since 2017 and love tending to my Red Wiggler worms in my indoor worm tower. It only seemed natural to try to find a way to incorporate worm castings into my hydroponics system since it's something I always have on hand.
This video is a very unscientific experiment using worm castings, kelp powder, and Epsom salt to create a simple, homemade nutrient solution for a more organic and holistic method of growing food year-round.

The Best Alternative to Traditional Stall Bedding for Horses & Livestock
มุมมอง 1752 หลายเดือนก่อน
Most horse owners are very familiar with shavings and straw typically used for bedding down stalls. From my early days of horse care in 1982 to today, shavings have been the mainstay in every barn I frequented. The bedding was included with board so I never thought much about the cost and I certainly never thought there might be better alternatives. From the age of 12 and into my 20's I cleaned...

nice video! great track!
Great video. Thank you 🙏
I use these for my horses! You can use a sharp knife to cut an X in the bag and soak them in the bag on the floor of the coop, then just dump ‘em out where you want them. Much easier than dumping them first, soaking them in the wheelbarrow and then dumping the wheelbarrow
Do you recommend root plugs or are paper towels fine for seeds via kratky?
@tiffanyrader5951 I definitely recommend root plugs. I have a few videos about the Kratky Method but this one was just to show how you can use stuff around your house to get started. These are my favorite... amzn.to/3VFeisK
Wow the detail of all the little annoying things that you could encounter if you choose different jars, net cups, wide mouth vs small. Love it! She has my mind. I try everything and find what works best.
Excellent video
Great suggestions. Have you tried cotton balls instead of paper towels?
I haven't tried cotton balls, but it seems like it should work. Great suggestion!
Did you use Yogurt function-low setting? I have searched and see this setting remains heat at 30-35C. In other recipes, they use rice cooker and maintain the temperature at 60C. I really want to use the Instant Pot to make amazake, my favourite beverage but kinda confused at the temperature setting of the Instant Pot.
No, I don't have a yogurt setting. I used the "keep warm" setting. On my Instant Pot, that's the same as the "cancel" button. It maintains a temperature of 135-140°F.
WHY 551 gms of water and 109 of starter. Is 550 and 110 not easier? And same with the flour amounts.
Hi there! Well, you certainly could change up the recipe (formula) if you want. Personally, when using a scale, I don't think rounding numbers up or down makes it any easier. Measuring out 551 grams takes the same amount of effort and accuracy as measuring 550 grams. It should be noted that if you reduce the flour by 1 gram and increase the water by 1 gram, you're effectively increasing the hydration by 2 grams. That might not be enough to affect the bread too much, but at what point do you choose to stop altering numbers? If this recipe called for 9 grams of salt would it be easier to just do 10 grams? There's a method to the formulas. However, experimentation is welcome!
Does this do well for deodorizing the coop? I do sand in my quails but man it stinks! Would love to grab some spent coffee from my local coffee shop and use it this way
@@cassiegray634 it works incredibly well to neutralize odors. Coffee is often used as a natural deodorizer.
@TalesFromtheMutiny thats what i thought too! I didnt know sand was so stinky or i wouldnt have used it 🤮 lol Love your video, thank you for updating it aswell, i appreciate knowing this is an option 😆
Great Presentation. God Bless Your Work.
I have very hard water with a high pH. Did an experiment last winter using natural ingredients ( worm castings, finished aged compost and some fish hydrolysate) in an aerated hydroponic set up. Plants really struggled until I as able to keep the pH around the 6 range, then things really took off. Have you had any issues with High pH affecting the growth with the Kratky method? Stay Well!!!!
To be honest, I haven't bothered with adjusting my pH so far. But that will be something I start experimenting with next.
Do you have an update video after a few months?
@jnf2211 I don't have an update video yet but happy to answer any questions. It's been work8ng wonderfully and is so easy to clean. My chickens haven't had any issues and they seem happy. There's zero odor still. I've only added maybe 8 cups of dried grounds but didn't need to...I was in the ha it of saving my own at home and so I just used them in there.
@ cool! thanks for the reply!
Thanks!
Roughly how many days does this recipe feed out for?
For a 1000 pound horse it's roughly 142 loading doses (142 days). Or 248 days/doses of the regular dose.
It's great to see done on a small area. Thanks. I keep thinking of doing one & this is good inspiration.
I've started collecting coffee grounds from a friend and drying them. I was about to put them in my coop when I read that they could be toxic because of the caffeine. Have you had any issues with this?
@jessicatyree1223 I haven't had any issues, and I did research prior to trying this myself. There are many people who have been using coffee grounds for years without issue. Technically, caffeine is toxic to everyone if they ingest too much. I have never seen my chickens eat the grounds (they also never ate the wood shavings or pellets I used to use for bedding). I never keep food or water in their coop where it could get mixed. In some areas, decaffeinated coffee grounds are sold as chicken bedding, so that might be an option if you're concerned. Another alternative is coco coir, which has a similar consistency but is pretty expensive and not quite as dust free. I have used coco coir and like it a lot. It should last a very long time and controls odors really well, too. That option could provide some peace of mind. Oh, and sand is a great option, too, but it needs to be a rough sand (like washed construction sand), NOT play sand, which is very fine and can cause impaction and death. It really seems that every option has a downside, so it's great to see that you're researching and asking questions. 🥰
Just found your channel with this video! After looking through your library, I subscribed immediately! I don’t understand how you don’t have a 100k subscribers!! Gonna binge some more of your videos. Thank you!!
Oh my goodness! Sane exact set up here, down to the shoe boxes! Bought last spring, but no time to implement over the summer. Dusting off the goal for fall - winter. So helpful!
Beautiful small track! I love the idea of digging a “waterhole” which then creates banks and a place for excess water to flow to. Win win!
Thanks! This happens to be an irrigation pond. We get irrigation water from mid May to mid October most years. We can store some water and then pump it out to irrigate gardens. It will eventually dry up sometime in late winter. But it's cool because then the horses run and walk through it, adding even more "hills".
Subscribed❤ Your video contained so much information and you were so honest about how you managed to grow indoors on a budget. Thank you❤
Thank you so much!!
This is awesome, thank you! And you're cool, btw! Dig the video!
It's beautiful! 🌄🐎💗
Yes. Give us the recipe please
Very interesting ; maybe now we have an explanation as to why the egg shell are a darker color now. 🐔☕
😂
Where did you get the coffee grounds from?
@pjhoover1 I got mine from a local coffee shop. I brought them 2 clean 5-gallon buckets with lids with my phone number written on the side. They called as soon as they were full. I'm in a small town and the buckets were full in 48 hours.
Turn the leaf blower on low and clean coop floor out.
@@pjhoover1 that's such a good idea! I just got a leaf blower 2 weeks ago. I used it to "dust" the barn. I'll have to remember your tip when it's time to do the coop again. Thanks!
I'd heard about coffee grounds for chicken coops. Thank you for sharing this & I didn't think about used grounds from a coffee shop. Please give us an update later with your pros & cons to this method.
Thanks for watching! I was very close to switching to course sand but it's incredibly expensive to get it delivered in my area. Plus, it's not really compostable. I have a garden and that's a factor I take into consideration. I started doing some research and this seemed like it would be a great alternative. The grounds have that same consistency as the sand but I can get it for free! I'll be sure to post updates.
I have been wanting to add coffee ground bedding to my coop and I read that the grounds can cause the chickens caffeine toxicity. I have found only one bagged coffee ground bedding that says safe for animals, but it’s no longer available. How have your chickens been doing with the coffee ground bedding and what do you know about the caffeine toxicity?
@donnah8976 I'm so sorry, I thought I replied to your comment but it was actually someone else's below with the same concerns. Check out my thoughts there. Thanks so much for the question.
I'm gonna try this for a hoof abcess.
Actually, cator oil is a great drawing agent...as long as the abcess is open. You can use castor oil alone or use it to make a poultice with red clover or echinacea. ❤️🩹
Thank you, I want to try this!
How long do you bake for? Thankd
I use the Bake option on my bread machine, which runs for one hour.
I just came across your video and had a question. I made salve and have been using it on my back for months… followed a recipe off another video… then today saw somewhere that you shouldn’t use it more than 4 weeks out of the entire year. Do you have any info for me on this?
@Naya-ku8ws Thanks for asking. Ill be sure to add this to the description. Comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can cause liver damage. This was noted in cases where comfrey was taken internally. All comfrey meant for internal use (like teas) has been banned in the US and in several European countries (maybe others as well but I'm nit sure). It should never be used on open wounds or broken skin. And, of course, should never be ingested. Some PAs may be absorbed by the skin so many practitioners advise using for no more than 10 days in row or 4-6 weeks a year.
@@TalesFromtheMutiny thank you so much for the response. It was working so well on my lower back that I assumed I needed to keep using it. I guess I will take a break from it for a bit. THANK you so much.
I make this and it’s a miracle healer. I will never be without. Great video!
What a wonderful idea! Thank you for sharing
Im trying to use my own fertilizer. Is anyone doing that?
Yes, I hope to have a new video up about this as soon as I have a few things dialed in.
I have a new video up showing the results from using worm casting tea. Check it out here...th-cam.com/video/aYng0kDGtck/w-d-xo.html
Can you replace some of the water with lemon juice?
@@bonnieyamada5012 Absolutely! It will help bring out more lemon flavor and will probably make the loaf a bit "fluffier" or lighter in texture.
@@TalesFromtheMutiny thank you. I wasn’t sure if it would upset the rise is the dough. My husband loves extra lemon
Hello, thanks for the video!! I'm a newbie at gardening but I've been interested in trying indoor gardening. So is it really possible to gow full plant (like lettuce) only using the grow lights?
@marthaa2056 HI! Thanks for watching! It is possible...I grow lettuce all the time under these lights. ❣️
Ok trying this for the first time followed exactly like you did similar tote but I used a bigger one. except I put it on the front porch to grow in partial sunlight. Exactly 2 days now. Very informative video thank you. Glad I found it.
I hope it's going well!
@@TalesFromtheMutiny actually to be honest too well lol I have a mutant Cucumber plant that literally DRINKS nutrients has about 12 little yellows flowers(and more starting) and it’s wrapped completely around the porch trellis and is climbing literally up towards the top of the porch. It’s HUGE! Every 2 days I have to refill. Yea it’s going well thank you very much for your knowledge.
Very informative video!
Just started doing this. Interesting seeing what each horse likes. Bicarb soda and brewers yeast are popular with mine. Thanks for the book ideas
@liscassey3475 Thanks for the comment. I keep meaning to try bicarb. I have 2 goats and they might enjoy it too.
Fabulous…hadn’t thought to include my goats! 💕
Such a great idea!
Love it thank you sharing!
Love love love this! So smart and omg Maggie scratching her belly on the log is precious!
It's perfect. Thanks for the walk
I looked up Barrina grow lights. They come in 1 of 3 color options (white, yellow, pink). Does it matter which color??
@@emichael06 I have a video explaining them a bit more. I did a comparison if you want to check it out. Basically, any will work. The white lights should be super brights and "6500k". Personally, I don't like the blurple pink lights because I have my growing set it in a room where I do other things. My preference is the yellow ones. But do check out the video and see for yourself. th-cam.com/video/es9rU5Kc89A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=T_f9ETmZoC9F_Tj0
@@TalesFromtheMutiny I got the lights! So you do not need to sprout the seeds? The tomato and zucchini videos people do always sprout the seeds a few days in a cup or something before going to a shoe box
like this guy does th-cam.com/video/mYqZh97dztI/w-d-xo.html
@emichael06 I don't sprout my seeds as a separate step. I wanted to keep things simple and easy for myself. So, I just put the seeds directly in the plug. You can always sprout them separately. I believe people sprout them as a separate step just to be sure the seed will germinate. You can always do that or plant 3 seeds in one hole. Pinch back all but one if they all sprout.
❤❤
Never thought of making chocolate pudding with hard boiled eggs.
Thank you! Just yesterday I got some chickens, and I got 2 adult chickens, although I am very calm with them , he always stayed on the opposite side of me, and one of the main solutions was needed scratch, and I never what scratch was, so thank you 😊
I'm so happy to hear it was useful!
@@TalesFromtheMutiny update: my chickens are so much more friendly, any time i come to feed or check up on them, they follow me all around (sometimes it's hard to even give their food!)
@@ThecoolGuy-yl9zo how wonderful!! 🥰
Thank you so much. This video is so informative. I really appreciate your demonstrating how you would look into the cost of your light usage and the difference between having lights on during peak vs off peak hours. Thank you for all the specificity and detail.
