  • Actual Title: Document-locking: Prize Papers Archive: Triangle letterpacket containing a Masonic Lodge meeting invitation, La Vertueuse, 25 August 5796 (Masonic Year)
Modelled after a triangle letterpacket found in the Prize Papers Collection containing an invitation to a meeting of the Masonic Lodge at La Vertueuse in Batavia (present-day Jakarta), held on 25 August 5796 (Masonic Year) at 6.30pm, sent by J.G. Herklots to Lieutenant George August Dossit D'Alban, The National Archives, UK, HCA 30/766.
Model found in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries (MIT), Unlocking History Research Group archive, MC 0760.
The Prize Papers collection is a vast and unique trove of documents and artifacts that were confiscated by British privateers and naval vessels between 1652 and 1817 - a period of time in which the seizure of ships was still a legitimate form of tactical warfare. The Prize Papers collection held at The National Archives, UK still holds thousands of documents and various objects that have not been touched for centuries. One of the collection’s highlights are 160,000 intercepted letters. For more information see www.prizepapers.de.
This letter is one of the many triangle formats in the collection. Due to the special historical circumstances that formed the collection, many letters are preserved exactly as they were archived during the early modern period. This letter was found in a box of private papers of Lieutenant George August Dossit D’Alban, who sailed on the Danish ship Sjælland, which was captured at the Cape of Good Hope in 1798. Most intriguing letter formats, letter folding and letterlocking techniques were found amongst D’Alban’s personal belongings. As many of his letters indicate, D’Alban was a member of a Masonic lodge. This letter was folded in the shape of a triangle and sealed in the middle, typical Masonic symbols, and it contained an invitation to a meeting of the Masonic Lodge La Vertueuse in Batavia (present-day Jakarta) to be held “precisely” at 6.30pm on 25 August 5796 (Masonic Year), 1796 in the Gregorian calendar commonly used today).

This is delightful to see, especially as a Brother!
I have a cleaner & easier way of melting the wax & sealing, with less chance of wax dripping onto the table, or the candle, or the sealing wax getting stuck to the table. While it may not be strictly historically accurate, I find it very helpful. I go through a lot of shipping labels, and it turns out that the shiny side of the backing paper for the labels is wonderful in that sealing wax, at least the variety I sell, doesn't stick to it, just as the adhesive of the labels peels right off. What would otherwise be trash is rather useful; I always include some with my wax - th-cam.com/video/UtD0pAqnmQc/w-d-xo.html
