To answer your question Vlad; Lincoln didn't change his position when he became president. In his inauguration speech March 4th 1861 he quoted himself in the 1858 speech stating that he was willing to free some of the slaves, none of the slaves or all the slaves as long as he can keep the Union. The US has been compromising on slavery since Washington took office in 1789 and Lincoln wasn't going to change that. Ironically, it's the aftermath of the Mexican-American War after the US annexed half of Mexico that started the crisis. The south wanted to expand slavery into the new stolen territories which would've tilted the balance of power to the south and the north didn't, for political reasons of course.

Douglas was also a major racist and didn’t care if blacks were enslaved. Lincoln was against slavery, but knew most of the voters were racist, even in Illinois, so to win them over he said that even though they shouldn’t be enslaved, they were still not equal to whites.

"this guy named Douglas" - Vlad. smh.
For the record, Stephen Douglas stayed on Lincoln's ass. about damn near everything. Douglas was a white supremist, unapologetically too. He absolutely did not believe in the emancipation of slaves or any other person of color. Lincoln, regardless of the initial reasoning, did. FREDERICK Douglass (abolitionist/orator), to avoid confusion, got close to Lincoln over the years, and Lincoln's entire thought process towards ppl of color and past slavery softened heavily. and Douglass STILL didnt endorse Lincoln lol. Because while Lincoln supported the freedoms of slaves and ppl of color, he dragged TF out of his big tall legs and feet on issues of equality, notably the right to vote, especially since ppl of color were fighting in the Civil War (on both sides).
And then they assassinated him. Assassination is never good, but they got Lincoln trying to enjoy some downtime. I thought that was particularly asshole-ish.
Anyhow, the debates between Lincoln and Douglas are legendary to this day. Yes, i paid attention in US History classes. Yes, i did my own research on topics too, for various reasons. Which led me to alot of truths. Cant really trust the textbooks for full transparency.........ever. They have always been slanted AF.
