Plato writes in one of his dialogues "thinking is the soul's dialogue with itself". A notebook is a way in which we can present more clearly to ourselves what our thinking, our dialogue with ourself, looks like. It also enacts the process, putting into motion the dialogue without getting stuck on having to hold it all together in memory.

I am absolutely obsessed with notebooks. I have small one's that I can put into a coat pocket, I have big notebooks that fit a lot of writing. Some are dedicated to ideas and thoughts , others I use as sketchbooks and some are dedicated to a specific story. I really love writing by hand and I love having a notebook with all important details that I can reach for while writing a story.

I've been writing my novel ideas in notebooks for the past 4 years since I was 13, and I got excited thinking you were doing the same thing as I am but you were writing in it like a diary? I fill my book up with characters, writing prompts and quotes whenever I'm inspired by a movie or even when I'm just sitting on the bus to school. Nothing I've written has anything to do with my real life haha, but I get these ideas so many times a day and when I try to write something about my real life, I'm blank... My thoughts instead become the thoughts of another character. But I love it :) (I'm an aspiring author)

I do the same thing! I've been doing this since I was 12, but it was always on and off. I'm starting to be a little more consistent in writing down my ideas, and I'm getting really excited because I'm so close to filling up my notebook!

Wonderful insight and a great video. In 2004 I traveled alone thru nine European countries in a month and journaled 60,000 words. I'm currently turning my trip into a memoir, my first book. Keeping notes of the little things is the only way to remember them all, so keep on writing!

loved this! i am going on a trip to Europe this winter and I am taking 2 little notebooks with me to document my experiences/thoughts, along with photographing them as well. Writing & photography are 2 creative outlets that help me make the most of my adventures. for anyone who isn't very fond of the idea of writing in a notebook, consider keeping a camera with you! pictures can sometimes tell stories just as well :)

Omg I can totally relate to you! Honestly, how couldn't I have thought of carrying a notebook around? I started to collect book/story ideas on my phone but it's so annoying and I don't always think of writing them down. But especially all the funny/interesting conversations I make up in my mind, they all get lost! Or even new realizations or quotes .. goodness I have to do this! This gets me so excited, I just hope that I find a notebook in the right size soon!

  • @MatthiasPendragon

I think I shall go buy a small notebook today. I always have a weird barrier to just writing to get thoughts out, I always feel like I'm doing it wrong or something. I think I'll give this a try and see if it helps my writing habits at all.

This series has come at the perfect time for me. I used to really enjoy writing as a hobby and did it every day, but then after a few incidents that knocked my confidence I stopped. And I haven't /really/ (give or take a few small failed projects that knocked my confidence further) written anything in three years. I'm getting back to the stage where I want to try again? Like... yes. I'm rubbish. But at least now I have the excuse of being out of practise to explain why I'm rubbish. xD And I'm not going to stop being rubbish until I start writing again and asking for advice and critique so... I was thinking of doing that. And now you're doing a series on writing that I can use to help me. I am pleased. xD

Videos like these are why I love your channel, Ariel. You are one of the most insightful people I have ever seen.
I am fifteen, and have been writing ever since I could pick up a pencil. And for about four years I have practiced this exact exercise. It is very relieving, and is very good for, well, the mind. Not only does it make you take in the world around you, it gives you inspiration for stories in ways that aren't so plot- oriented (a trap many people fall into that I think causes cliches and a lack of heart in lots of stories).

yess!! I've been keeping a journal for around 2 years now and it's so nice and therapeutic to have a space to vent, write, make lists, collages, dream. I always imagine future, older me or even my future kids unearthing this journal that's been with me through some pivotal years of my adolescence and re-live moments I'd forgotten about. and laugh. because some of the stuff I write is actually ridiculous.

  • @MoonacreHandmade

Can I just say I love how excited you are about keeping a journal! I love keeping a journal, always have. However, just recently have I started using it for my writing/novel. So far it has come in quite handy. I am able to put references, ideas, brainstorming, characters, structures, pins I like, quotes. Anything that inspires me. I have made mine sort of in a bullet journal style. So far I really like it, but who knows it may evolve.

I LOVE notebooks. I've mentioned them a billion times on my own channel because I am so passionate about that way of writing. I have so many notebooks that I have filled over the years.I always try to fill at least one page every day. That way I keep up with writing and work on my skills. Plus, they are an interesting way to look back on your life and what you were feeling or did that particular day.

  • @emmyrose77

I've also recently began writing again & rediscovered my love for notebooks. When an idea hits you at 2am & won't let you rest till you've written it down; then pen & paper are where it's at. That's actually how I wrote out the first draft of my prologue to my most recent book writing adventure. Along w/ random smatterings of dialogue, backstories, outlines, plot points, etc. My story also involves a fair amount of research so I have 2 pages FULL of facts about the things ;). SO MUCH HIGHLIGHTING! I like you love my laptop but there is no way I would've been able to make sense of all of it on a word document. can't wait to see the rest of this series, cause I am also fairly new at the writing things; not counting the short stories & poems I wrote as a kid/teen.

Ariel, I am super excited about this writing series! As someone who always says they want to write but is never motivated to, this is really inspiring. I like the idea of not necessarily committing to some big project, but simply jotting down thoughts. I think this will be a good place for me to start!

I have so many notebooks that I don't know what to do with, but I love having them! There's just a sense of relief and calm in just owning them, not even writing in them. But I agree: they're fundamental and they're totally worth having.

I have an awesome cloth bound notebook that is ALWAYS with me! It's all just random writing ideas, or things that could turn into ideas, quotes I like, cool pictures from the internet that I use for stimulus material. It is honestly the best thing to be able to write down any ideas I have! It even has a little loop to put my pencil so I never have any excuse not to write

I have been writing in journals, notebooks and idea books for as long as I can remember... Not only am I a reader, but I'm an artist and a writer as well and you'll never know when inspiration strikes. It's a blessing and a curse rolled into one, not that I'm complaining about it, though!

I can relate to that! Sometimes when I'm in the mood to write something if I try to write on my laptop I just stare at the blank page and nothing comes out of it, but if I'm writing on a notebook I can easily write a page. I love carrying around little notebooks for when I have ideas, it's so much better!

I've been journaling for a while and always had a system on how I would. Sometimes I would get frustrated on not knowing what do journal even though I had thoughts and end up not journaling.
A month ago I decided to to let it go and do whatever with journaling. Instead of just paragraphs it can be phrases and doodles. This came at the right time, thanks!

I have joined a new school for my A Levels and have been attending for 2 months now. I found myself compiling the events of the day in my head until i could get home and tweet them. i dont have many followers and i stopped caring a while ago so Twitter became my online journal. AND IT WAS SHORT AND SIMPLE. But somewhere around the mid of October i started forgetting stuff that happened in the day, maybe because everything wasn't so new and stimulating anymore, so i couldn't chronicle it in my online journal -sort of. I REALLY think i should get back to writing in a notebook but maybe not carry a hefty one this time. This video was a great reminder, Ariel!

I feel uncomfortable if I don't have a notebook on me ... it gets to the point where, if I have an idea out in public and don't have anywhere to write it down, I facebook message it to myself or email it to myself. Plus, I have a notebook obsession: I probably have about 8 or 9 full or semi-full of ideas and illustrations of characters and things. It's good to have notebooks. I agree. Congratulations for sticking with your writing :)

I love writing notebooks! It's how I process story points sometimes. I write pros and cons to certain situations in my stories and I sometimes write diary entries in the middle of it too. I used to try and keep everything separate (like have a diary notebook, a story notebook, a poetry/song notebook), but now I have everything in one book because I really didn't write diary entries regularly enough to be worth having a separate book. Now I kind of want to make a video talking about my writing notebooks and how I use them. You've inspired me! :)

I really enjoyed this video, and I also think that notebooks are very helpful. I have this one little purple notebook that I tend to write in whenever I have an idea for a story. Now, I've written just more than story ideas in that notebook. I've also written down character names that I thought were interesting, titles for stories, and even lines of dialogue. I find it very useful, because I know its something that I will hopefully always have, and can be able to look back on. That, in my opinion, is a great part of keeping a notebook with you.

I am relating to this so much ! As so often, I find myself filled with the motivation to write as I watch this... But I'm so bad at keeping up with notebooks... A couple of things I've wanted to do with notebooks and that you might be able to do since you're way better at pushing through things than I am: mapping ! Mapping is fantastic ! As you're starting on a notebook without lines, I'd strongly suggest that. Just thinking about space in the little journeys you take every day, drawing maps and lines and arrows with notes on what you notice, think about space differently than how we're used to (north, south, proportions) because that's not the way you visualise your daily movements, then try to visualise them that way, like you have a helicopter flying above you, doodle the view... Man I should do this shouldn't I. Also, one thing that helped me keeping up at some point was the "4 minutes diary" idea: take 4 minutes each day, seperate the page in two, and write two lists of 2 minutes each of "What I saw" and "What I remember". It soon becomes poetic and it's a great way to remember things and moods when you don't feel like expliciting them by writing. Lists are generally a great snap of your day ! Good luck, and good luck with not buying too many notebooks, cause that's my main problem...

I never liked writting on my computer. I've always used notebooks. Or actually just loose pieces of paper. I feel like it gives me more freedom when it comes to the content. Since it's just some random piece of paper what I write doesn't have to be perfect, nice looking or anything. I write whatever I feel like writting down, I cross stuff out, write above the other things. It's refreshing. No rules, no limits. Unlike when I type. 'Cause then I somehow feel that constant need to edit and to make things nice, perfect and awesome. It's a lot less fun and I find that I forget a lot of cool stuff because I focus on "beautiful, perfect piece"

Joan Didion has a great essay called "On Keeping a Notebook" that I think you'd really like! It talks about the impulse to collect thoughts and memories and observations, and it's just so so good :) I keep a notebook too, and I've recently started thinking of it as a sort of muggle pensieve--a place to put thoughts you want to get out of your mind for a while. :)

ariel you are great! is so cool that you have a notebook to write in any place, i used to write mi ideas in my cellphone, when i was traveling anywhere, but it was so boring, i dont know, i think a notebook is more magical and inspiring, like the old great writers of the past!

I think it's great that you have a notebook with you always. I try to do that as well. It feels more exciting to write in a notebook on the go versus my phone. I'm also doing NaNo. If you feel like getting started with a NaNoWriMo tag, I have one on my channel. I can't wait to hear your story idea!
    Best,
    Rebecca

Sounds like you need a Midori style traveler's notebook system. It is not exclusively for travel. It is a modular system that allows you to put several small books in one leather cover. Kind of a place to categorize all of the ideas swirling around in your head, but provides quick access to them when you want it! There are tons of TH-cam videos about the Midori style notebooks and the knock offs called Fauxdoris. Having acquired two of them in the past 3 months has been wonderful for me, seeing the books that you have simply said, "it's Midori time"!

I love how you have $ to travel through Europe but couldn't afford a notebook...
Yeah, keeping a small notebook around is a great idea. I Like using index cards too, they help me rearrange story ideas.
Keep up the great blogging! it's inspirational.

oh my gosh, that's so weird. I also like the word tether! A song by a band I listen to says "tethered together" it's like my favorite line to say!
You've persuaded me to carry around a notebook.. but that also means I have to carry a purse or something- cause I have purses and live in California so I never ever need a jacket, so limited pockets..
Looking forward to the Writing series and more of your regular type of videos!

Notebooks with no lines are so much fun! As are notebooks with grids or box grids. Great for doodling.
