That wine joke! But I only have one "writer's notebook" that's used for story ideas. Saying it's almost legible is a stretch because it mostly gets used after a glass of wine or two or when I'm in a rush to write down an idea. Super cute video!
This was so fun, I adore seeing how other people use their notebooks. I have lots of notebooks for lots of different bits of writing myself. But the one thing that I always add to my notebooks now, is an index. Then I know exactly what I’ve written and where it is in the notebook. Has really helped me out on many an occasion.
It's really refreshing to see someone take cheap notebooks, decorate them, and use them for writing. I'm so used to seeing people buy these expensive/fancy notebooks and being on a budget myself, it makes me jealous, lol. Idk why I never considered decking out a cheap one. I can find tons of materials at my local dollar store (the notebooks, construction/decorative paper, lettering, stickers, etc). So I think I'll try and make a project out of it. Thanks for your tips~
The writer's notebooks are fascinating (didn't know there was such a thing), but I am particularly impressed that you can still wear your 8th grade graduation dress.
Ok...I have a million spirals. I have finally stopped buying them because I would get them so messy. If I had an idea I needed to get down fast before I forgot it, I would just grab whatever notebook I could find, and then one story would be spread around a couple notebooks. Or I would try to get all of my notes and outlines for one story in one spiral and I would have to rip out some pages and the loose pages would get lost. I discovered disc-bound spirals. I bought a cheap back of 5 from Tulia on Amazon and some paper inserts. I will never go back. I can move my pages in and out as needed. It doesn't matter where I write or what order I write it in...I can move pages wherever I need them and still have the convenience of writing in a spiral. I love it so much.
I use a combination of notes on my iPhone, Scrivener, and fountain pen and paper. For notebooks I use cheap Piccadilly ones from Barnes & Noble since they’re a lot like Moleskine but a lot cheaper. I also use an A5 refillable Filofax notebook that I refill with pastel Hammermill copy paper. 500 sheet ream for $12 - $20. Cut them in half and you have 1,000 A5-ish sheets for less than the cost of one Moleskine.
Loved this video! Do you bullet journal. I always wanted a writers notebook and specifically bought a moleskin notebook too! So far I am keeping track of scene revisions- fun times- but loved this video!!
awww thanks I'm glad you liked the video! I love looking at other people's bullet journals, but I've never tried it myself. I don't think I'd actually keep up with the organizing part of it haha!
I've said it before but your intros tho 😄 I'm a fan. My notebooks are incredibly useful.....for b-roll. That's about it. The actual contents are sparse and very poorly organised. A typical entry from one of mine: 'he can go there, maybe, or not. ACTION - but good.' And I remember Garbage Trucks in Space! Still waiting on a release date tbh...
LOL I have fun with a goofy intro! My notes end up like that, too, sometimes. "This could happen OR OH WAIT IT COULD BE THIS INSTEAD!! Make this cooler." That's always super helpful later on... And yaaasss Garbage Trucks in Space gang...ooft haha!
I love seeing how other writers use their notebooks. I've been using my stash of Archer & Olive journals as hybrid bujo/project planners/writing trackers for about 6 months now, and I love that!
I love this video! I feel pressure for everything to be perfect and sustainable. Thanks for laughing at yourself and giving me some much needed perspective!
Love the dipper fountain pen and ink bottle. I’ve been using cartridge fountain pens since I was 11 (I’m early 50’s now). I saw one and just fell in love with them.
OMG! This video speaks to me 🤣 or more like yells. I have so many notebooks for writing, ideas, shopping lists...etc. I am trying to go digital though and use Word, Evernote, etc. X) but nothing beats the feel of paper and the look of multiple colors of ink 🥰. Love the introduction! Great job!
I made myself a “Life Notebook.” It’s a discbound notebook that has different sections and I can change up the contents as needed. One of the sections is for my second novel. Another section is for notes on movies I watch, another section is for notes on books I read, and yet another section is for journal. I just archive the filled-in pages as needed. It’s on my channel. 😊 This video was so much fun! Thanks for sharing!
Loved this! So glad I found your channel. I've been through tons of different types of notebooks, fancy and not, trying to find what works for me. I'm pretty happy with my system now, which is to use a traveler's style leather cover for lots of cheap cardboard-covered notebooks. Then I switch them out when they're full....mostly of morning pages, lol. I do have one pretty notebook separated for a current project, but it was a gift! I obsessively use the notes app on my phone for stray ideas.
Thank you so much for the video. I absolutely love to write on notepads/journals/notebooks instead of going tap tap tap on my phone because it feels the most writer'ly thing to do (haha). I have been using scrivener for years now and it is so good to know that you use it to put down your ideas as well.. (weird how I never thought about it and have always used One Note for that purpose). Also, looking at the Moleskine journal, I am now very very keen on trying it, esp because they lay flat when you write and not every notebook/journal gives that.
📓📔📒🗒️ A storage bin in the garage is filled with past notebooks, ranging in story ideas, philosophical commentary, poetry, songs, and drawings. 🎨The books that are filled with artwork and color along with the writing are my favorites, reminiscent of old magical tomes. A beautiful leather journal with a wrap-around-cord sat vacant for a long while (too beautiful for handwriting?). Anyway, the pages are now done up in watercolor paintings. 🖼️
I've got a whole duffel bag filled with old journals and art journals! I like looking back through them, too, on occasion. Yeah, those fancy notebooks and journals are too intimidating to use! I've had ones that just sit around forever because they're too pretty to use.
A couple of years ago I changed from 9x6 lined spiral cheap notebooks to A5 dotted notebooks (bujo style) because I refused to stop using my super-inky Pilot Precise V5s even though paper was getting thinner and thinner and cheaper and cheaper to the point where I was having trouble reading what was on the other side. But just writing on one side of the paper felt "wasteful" to me in a way that buying a more expensive notebook didn't.
Love a good notebook. I have a notebook for each novel I decide to write (so not each idea). And that notebook goes from brainstorm to draft, to self edit notes, to CP and Beta feedback, to querying feedback, to professional editing notes, marketing plans, publishing timelines etc. So they span a lot and because of that I find the perforated notebooks don’t hold up against my wear and tear so they’re usually more like your last one. But I also use scrivener and notes there. Still, the physical representation of each novel is nice to have for me. 💜
I have a fancy one that I never use, because I'm afraid to mess it up and a few cheap ones, where I try to organise my thoughts about my ideas before I start outlinig, worldbuilding, etc. I generally use them as braindumps, I write down everything I come up with for a new idea and see if it has potential, and them move on to outline on the computer, or, I can see the idea is a dead end even before I start working on it, and it's just an unfinished thought on a cheap notebook.
I prefer writing my notes on lined paper that I then transfer into a 3 ring binder. The 3 ring binder holds various book ideas. And Each book idea has its own tab, so all the notes for the same book stay organized that way.
I use the free notion....but i have zillions of notebooks lying around with different ideas....i started when i was13 and im 18 (amost😒).....love this video ......
@@MeredithPhillipsWrites any idea where you found that "plot" cover? That...seems like something i want to do with my notebooks (which, freaky enough, are the Basic spiral ones like you have😂)
@@hindenburg2006 It was an oooold bit of scrapbooking paper from Studio Calico. Got it on sale years and years ago, so I don't think it's around anymore. But if you want fun papers, definitely check out the scrapbooking aisles at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc.!
I keep new and old journals and use them to write my stories ideas as well as fanfiction. I also use Google doc or slide for my writing but the one that's helpful to me is Notebook Microsoft keeps all my ideas there and saved them Another thing is I watch your video today to get tips on making your notebook writing hand because I get tired of writing the same way even with different pens colors and your video helped me for some reason so thanks
I have sooooo many slips in the notes app on my phone that it takes like an hour to go through and read all of them. Plus I have a writer's binder with loose slips of paper with ideas on them. Some are paperclipped if they're more than 1 page and some are tucked into a clear slip because they are such a large idea with so many pages they didn't fit into a paperclip. So currently I am a bit scrambled. I do plan on eventually writing all my ideas down onto paper so that I'll have just a binder full of ideas, tossables and good ones. lol But all the ideas I'm currently working on are put into manila folders each named for the story/series they are part of. To help keep my organized. lol and some of the pages are old-looking as in they have coffee stains or watermarks from spilt drink or condensation from the outside of my water glass.
i really wanted / needed a writers notebook so i grabbed one for like three bucks at target! it's a graph ruled notebook which i really love more than regular lined! so far i have my outline, a list of basic information of important characters, and character profiles for the major characters (besides the antagonist... for some reason) and i feel like this one is for sure going to work better than my other ones... which is definitely a lie because i'm awful at commitment!!
This is exactly what I was looking for! And you had me laughing a few times so I had to subscribe! I’ve been creating a new “book ideas” notebook! I also have a HP one that I do plotting in… though I haven’t finished a book yet 🥺
I got my writers notebook at the dollar store, its poor quality, the paper edges fold easily and usually *always*, it bleeds through relatively easily, and has no page numbers, the pen i use (noteably red, i only like to write in colors) was 99 cents And i love it so much I stick countless sticky notes in it, stuck like a billion pretty stickers on the front of it, etc and its great
