The Hague is the capital city of the South Holland province of the Netherlands. With a population of over half a million, it is the third-largest city in the Netherlands. Situated on the west coast facing the North Sea, The Hague is the country's administrative centre and its seat of government, and while the official capital of the Netherlands is Amsterdam, The Hague has been described as the country's de facto capital since the time of the Dutch Republic.
The Hague is the core municipality of the Greater The Hague urban area containing over 800,000 residents, and is also part of the Rotterdam-The Hague metropolitan area, which, with a population of approximately 2.6 million, is the largest metropolitan area of the Netherlands. The city is also part of the Randstad region, one of the largest conurbations in Europe.
The Hague is the seat of the Cabinet, the States General, the Supreme Court, and the Council of State of the Netherlands. King Willem-Alexander officially lives in the Huis ten Bosch and works at the Noordeinde Palace together with Queen Máxima. Most foreign embassies in the Netherlands are in the city. The Hague is also home to the headquarters of many Dutch companies, with Shell plc having major offices in the city as well. The Royal Library of the Netherlands is also located there. The Hague's coastal area includes the popular seaside resort Scheveningen.
The Hague is known as the global hub of international law and arbitration. The International Court of Justice, the main judicial arm of the United Nations, is based in the city, as are the International Criminal Court, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Europol, and approximately 200 other international governmental organizations. The name "The Hague" is commonly used as a totum pro parte to refer to either of the international courts that reside in the city.

A Haia ou simplesmente Haia (em neerlandês: Den Haag, [dɛnˈɦaːx], ou, oficialmente, 's-Gravenhage AFI: [ˈsxraːvə(n)ˌɦaːɣə]) é a terceira mais populosa cidade dos Países Baixos (depois de Amesterdão e Roterdão), com uma população de 489 375 (2010) (população da área metropolitana: 600 000) e com uma área aproximada de 100 quilômetros quadrados. Está localizada no oeste do país, na província da Holanda do Sul, da qual também é capital. A cidade da Haia, assim como Amesterdão, Roterdão e Utrecht, é parte do conglomerado urbano de Randstad, com uma população cerca de 7,6 milhões habitantes.
A Haia é a sede de facto do governo do país: todavia, oficialmente, não é a capital dos Países Baixos, pois, de acordo com a constituição, a capital é Amesterdão. A Haia é a sede do Eerste Kamer (primeira câmara) e da Tweede Kamer (segunda câmara), respetivamente as câmaras alta e baixa, que formam o Staten Generaal (literalmente, os "Estados Gerais"). O rei Guilherme Alexandre dos Países Baixos vive e trabalha na Haia. Todas as embaixadas e ministérios estão localizados na cidade, assim como a Hoge Raad der Nederlanden (A Suprema Corte), o Raad van State (Conselho do Estado) e muitas organizações lobistas.
Outros lugares de interesse são a Grote Kerk, o Stadhuis e a Gevangenpoort. Quando o conde Guilherme da Holanda construiu, nesta cidade, seu castelo, em 1248, ela transformou-se no centro administrativo do condado. No fim do século XVI, a cidade emergiu como capital flamenga durante a sublevação dos Países Baixos contra a Espanha.
Na área metropolitana da cidade, estão instaladas diversas indústrias, como fábricas de material eletrônico, metalúrgicas, produtos químicos e alimentos. Entre seus conjuntos urbanos mais significativos, estão o Binnenhof (corte interior) e o Buitenhof (corte exterior).
