  • The Komodo dragon is the world's largest lizard and one of its fiercest predators. The crew travels to Komodo Island to observe these magnificent and deadly creatures.
1000 Days for the Planet is the latest project from world-renowned scientist and UN Ambassador for the Environment, Jean Lemire. Lemire explores the world from his 50-foot sailboat, the Sedna IV, stopping everywhere from Alaska to the Philippines. Along the way, the series reveals the extraordinary beauty of the planet whilst helping us understand how our living environments function, and ultimately ponder the great challenges we all face.
Exploring life from ocean depths to mountain peaks, and from vast savannahs to the heart of the jungle, this series is beautiful and challenging. 1000 Days for the Planet is a journey around our vast planet to discover life’s extraordinary diversity and to bear witness to its fragile balance.

It's admirable how the people treat Komodo dragons as part of the island rather than in conflict with it. So many cases with the natural world, people are the threat not the other way around. These inhabitants understands that better than most.

@kingpickle3712 It's not stupid; it's part of living life. Let's not victim blame. What happened happened, and it's none of their faults. Predators exist and should not be dismissed for being predators. Living ingrained with the wild is rewarding and dangerous, and for some it's their way of life, and I personally do not judge them harshly for it.

Great documentary but cant believe that no one mentioned the fact that Komodo Dragons have a venomous bite. fun fact that probably lost in translations, the local natives don't call them "komodo" (the name "komodo" were actually given by westerner scientists back then). in local natives' language, they're actually called "buaya" (crocodile) or "buaya darat" (land crocodile).
if you ask any other Indonesian elsewhere, "what is buaya?" they'll show you either crocodile or alligator, but if you ask the same question to local natives here, "what is buaya?" they'll show you the komodo instead ...

Lebih mirip naga (dragon) karena lidahnya yg bercabang. Biar saja nama Komodo Dragon lebih unik, menggambarkan kadal besar dari Pulau Komodo. Penamaan Komodo Dragon sudah tepat.

Indonesia has gotta be one of the only places in the world where the human population knows well that they're just guests in the ecosystem, and not its owners and rulers by default by virtue of being human alone. I really wish more cultures were like that.

    • @bewilder210

Indonesian here, most of Indonesian have something that is called "Kearifan lokal" or local wisdom. This is very prevalent in Indonesia country side and the people upheld them + very strict about it, and it helped preserved the nature in the respective area. One of many thing in which our local wisdom actually helped to preserve nature is the story of Mount Salak. The locals there will tell people from outside the area about ghost / djinn story in there, about how people missing there, and the mountain is a very sacred area. Of course modern human will say all of that bogus, and I can agree with that. However, those stories worked and Mount Salak still preserved its natural habitat up until now, and Mount Salak is actually an important water source for the surrounding cities. If there was not a single local wisdom that making Mount Salak sacred, all the natural habitat there will be gone already, filled with resorts and hungry investor, and more importantly losing natural water source that can support the surrounding cities.

@@M43782 I agree, Im not saying that there werent problems regarding environmental "purity" in Indonesa, in fact there are alot of problems here. I wonder if they would make a good pet if they were captive born ? Some of the large monitor lizards , like the Black Throated and Peach Throated monitors make nice pets though they require a lot of work and need a ton of room.

It’s not all that interesting honestly. All varanids have venom. It ranges in potency from causing itching to flu like symptoms and throat swelling. The Komodo’s venom might be slightly stronger.

I heard the voice of a bird from the far east that says your komodo is more the raptor brontosaurus. That means, it's a herbivore. It's not finding anything to it's liking so it's searching. Try pineapples, probably loves them.

A Komodo would put up a tough fight, but the lion would likely win due only to its size advantage. Gonna need a megalania, but even that be way too big for any modern or even extinct felid.
