Frigidaire Unimatic & Pulsamatic Washers Washing Together

- My 1957 Frigidaire Pulsamatic washer (the white washer) and my 1958 Frigidaire Unimatic washer (the turquoise washer) have very different transmissions which are very different from each other in both construction and action. The Unimatic was the top of the line Imperial models, it washes at 330 pulses per minute and spins at 1140rpm. The Pulsamatic has a much faster 630 pulses per minute and also spins at 630rpm. The Pulsamatic agitator stroke length was reduced to 7/8" to make up for the faster agitator speed. It sure is fascinating to see them together!
The Unimatic recently needed to be repaired after nearly 20 years of no issues, so I took the machine to the workshop and did the transmission repair which needed a bit of work. All is well again.
The pulsing action is so damn beautiful!

That's the Pulsamatic, but the 1957 Unimatics came with the exact same control tower fashioned design... just with 2 more knobs aside of the timer. Pulsamatics were low-end models and are now extremely rare(almost impossible to find these days). Unimatics were high end models and are also difficult to find(all vintage washing machines are) but not like the Pulsamatic...

Wow what great machines!!! My Mother had the 1965 model with the three ring agitator and that was a fantastic washer, Got even my most dirtiest play clothes clean with just one wash!!! I really love and miss that washer!!!
Look at those machines go ! That’s the best wash action! It’s ridiculous what’s out there today ! Some with a wash plate ect ! None of the newer stuff would be no match to those old washers ! Those are the real deal

Unfortunately, there's no manufacturer that still makes a washing machine that has this wash action. I remember going to the laundromat with my mother that featured these kind of machines.

I definetely want both machines... and an early(1947 - 1948) Unimatic too. Poor me I'm in England and the early Uni's and Pulsa's are extremely difficult to find for sale! :[

These GM Frigidaire washers are superior to its competitors. I grew up with Frigidaire, a 1968 and a 1970's washer; the latter's agitator would break off, and therefore snag clothes. The 1968 had holes for detergent. I felt these agitators were the best at cleaning while being easy on clothes.

Had both types before 1980.
Learned how to wash clothes in our 52 Fridgie, and 60s GE electric dryer - completed a load in less than an hour!
Us kids did chores, including washing, drying, ironing, folding, putting clothing away., and we had a mangle too.

OMG! I loved this. Even though the Pulsmatic is more iconic it seems like the Unimatic is less manic and would have greater longevity. Qualitatively speaking, which of the two is better built and which would last longer?
I'd say the Unimatic has more solid parts as most earlier designs of washers were. The "manic" agitation in the Pulsamatic really wouldn't make any difference in longevity. Overall the Unimatic is a better design.

Are the rubber rings around the agitator beating the dirt and bad odors out of the laundry, and does the base have ridges to help with turnover agitation?
Which one do you think cleans better, or do you think they are about the same? The one on the right seems to have a more thorough cleaning action, whereas the one on the left seems to be vibrating the dirt out. Also, it looks like the only way to get the water out of the drum is to spin; there aren't any holes at the bottom or sides of the drum, to allow for any drainage.
I'd say the Unimatic (turquoise machine) is better overall at cleaning. Frigidaire experimented with faster agitation Pulsamatic on their lower end models for the 1955-1958 model years, the top of the line models were all Unimatics. The Unimatic also had an 1140rpm spin speed which of course is much better at extraction which also leads to better rinsing with a high speed spin before the rinse. Yes these are solid tub washers, with only one row of holes at the top of the tub right under the rim, the water is removed via centrifugal force. This has some advantages as the clothes never have contact with anything in the outer tub, including spun out suds and grime unlike modern washers where the outer tub can form grime that can re-contaminate the clothes.

I see writing on the agitator regarding lint. Do you have to manually clean out a lint filter inside the agitator? Thanks for sharing videos of these vintage machines!
No that ring says "lint chaser" which sweeps the floating lint out the drain holes at the top of the tub during overflow wash and rinse periods. No filter to clean in this machine.
Notice the quality of the 1957s plastic top half of the agitator. It looks like modern plastic or polycarbonate.It actually looks more modern than the 1958 3 ring which was a year newer. I thought at this time manufacturers were using either bakelight or aluminum agitators. Nice 👍.
Pulsamatics were the lower end models of the time. The Unimatics were high end. Possibly why Pulsamatics are extremely rare.
I want ALL of the Pulsamatics and Unimatics... DESPERATELY.
@@CBF1A couple of relatives of mine had GM Frigidaire washers from the late 60s and 1970s. Unfortunately I never got to see either of them run.
I can't imagine these machine would do very good with everyday use with a large family with washing baby clothes and then overalls.
They did just that though.
My parents bought a used set of these back in the mid 80’s and that machine did very well for a family of 4. I remember mom saying that our clothes were so much cleaner and fresh smelling.

The 1958 Unimatic certainly won in this video... both are excellent washing machines that I damn well want to have. Too bad I'm in England and 1947-48 Unimatics and Pulsamatics are super difficult to find for sale.

They do still exist but are apparently damn hard to find according to professional washer collectors. Just a few collectors are known to own Frigidaire Pulsamatics but I still want one like you wouldn't imagine how desperate I am for all the Unimatics and Pulsamatics.

Not only can it wash a heavy load of white, it's one of the best washers ever to wash towels and whites.
