  • Nestled among the mountains, lakes, and rivers of the Adirondacks, Downtown Saranac Lake is home to over 100 businesses, most of them locally-owned, two historic districts, numerous events, and friendly people. It is the hub of the Village of Saranac Lake, pop. 5,400, the largest community in the Adirondacks. Downtown Saranac Lake is a truly unique destination!

I made the drive through this region on my way from Toronto to Vermont and I found it haunting and beautiful... I love picturing growing up here. It's got a touch of desolation on account of it being somewhat remote and surrounded by beautiful endless wilderness and the fact I get a snapshot of it from passing through in an early fall evening and not knowing it's festivals, when people crowd together, etc.
Please let me know if there are any stories or mysteries of the place, suggested places to see, hikes to take, etc.

Lucky you! My 2 years at Paul Smiths were such great time. The outdoors in that area were so magical. I am living in Florida, but I would trade places immediately, if I could! My heart is still in the Adirondacks. Oh yeah, my family had a lake front cottage in Brant Lake. So beautiful and peaceful!

Our grown children have moved to Plattsburgh NY and so we kay need to sell our home in upstate NY and move as well. We do find we are interested in living in a 55 plus senior apartments but would like to see if they would have HUD available? We ae on social security an in our early and mid 70's/ I was activities director for an adult home for over 20 yrs and have also worked in area hospitals and nursing homes over my many years of life. My husband was supervisor of shipping in large corporation. But we lived in smaller village and so are not financially that well off, in this area and did not pay as much as perhaps a city would. We thought being closer to family when older may be best.
Do you have suggestions of any apartments that would seem right for us in the area? Would love it if they had laundry in apartment the stackable type , but we would just need to adapt if not and discuss it all when we do have a lovely cat aged 7 yrs and she says inside and very quiet. We would need to somehow sell our home and be able to move so do not know just how to make this work well, so will talk with real estate people and may need to put clause in the applications, but we will see? Our son would help us move and he is in construction in the area. He does build and works on homes in area, etc.
I know it is lovely in that area and we feel we would be interested in knowing more. Thank you and hope you would be able to help.
