explain why you create danger for yourself on your drives,by hanging a stick and phone outside of vehicle ,when you could have those mounted to your vehicle to show you how good a driver you are? aww those that are tick tok user challenges am guessing??

Possibly a mounted pole might catch a branch sometime, just a thought 🤔

I've been a broadcast engineer for over 47 years myself now working part time(semi retired). Listeners have no idea what kind of conditions others like Wes and myself have gone through to get to the tower site in incredibly bad weather when the station goes off the air. You were fortunate to have good weather for this trip. The mystery box he swapped out is a audio processor. It takes the raw audio from the studio and converts it to a much better sound the listener can appreciate before sending it to the main transmitter. Glad you were able to take him up in the Jeep. Much better than snow cat, snow mobile or hiking in.

When I was in California, I worked for a wireless ISP. There were times that the boss went to one of the transmitter sites via helicopter, with the techs from the TV stations. You couldn't get there by ground, even with a snow cat.

Hi Cassey, the link between the studio and the transmitter on the mountain top is known as an STL or Studio Transmitter Link.
In this case I suspect they were moving basic audio to the transmitter site. The processor they changed converts that basic audio to an FM format, regulates the levels so the transmitter isn't over driven and is then fed to the exciter, maybe external or internal, which determines the frequency to be radiated by the main transmitter which is, as you stated, basically a big amplifier producing probably 10,000 watts output. Through antenna gain of a factor of 10 you get an Effective Radiated Power (ERP) of 100,000 watts to the public at large. This is the station's licenced output power.
That large box you carried in contained one power tube costing a few thousand dollars and relatively fragile.
Your customer was doing the job I'd done for better part of 50 years though I never needed a track Jeep to get to my sites. 4wd certainly to some. Most had good access.
    Regards from Canada's banana belt.
