  • What Players and Legends Have to Say About Larry Bird Will SHOCK You...
Before Bird and Magic, the NBA was like that underappreciated band playing in the corner of a dive bar. But the Larry-Magic duo cranked up the volume, turned up the lights, and suddenly, the NBA wasn't on the sidelines, it was the headline act. Bird's role in this revitalization should be etched in basketball history.

They love to say he wasn't athletic - was Magic athletic? Show me the 6'9" guy that was all over the court all day doing everything. "They love to say he talked trash. If you back it up IT AINT TRASH! It's called calling it - and often in your face! They just hate to admit how great Larry was - which is pathetic bc he made the game so great for so many afterwards who can't hold a candle to him. .

Why did you show his rich-man-in-the-NBA house when you talked about his humble beginning? Hilarious. You also didn't show the fall that hurt his back as you were talking about it, but other than those two editing slips, this video is flat out excellent. Thanks for sharing it. Larry is still the GOAT!

Bird hurt his back putting in a cement driveway at his or his mom's home. Not on the bb court as you claim. He's such a blue collar man that he was doing alot of that back breaking himself. He would continually strain his back after that on the court.

Larry did have great numbers in many seasons but his intangibles (can't think of another single word) were what made him magical. His teams just looked to him for their identity and will to win. He had an unreal control over his teams and over opponents in the mental realm.

    • @steeltrap3800
      @steeltrap3800 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Intangibles is a great pick, really.
I suppose we could use "unquantifiable off-ball factors" to make it a little clearer for some not as familiar with English.
I believe intangibles in the way you're suggesting it effectively comes down to those things he did that weren't directly to do with handling the ball or defending. Importantly, as you said, they're things that can't readily be measured, too, which is why I think "intangibles" is a great single word pick.
      Cheers

Bird was the only man in NBA history to shoot better than 50-40-90 four straight years while averaging over 28 PPG.
And that's not counting the double digit career rebounding and being the best passing forward in history.
Celts go from 29 wins before his rookie year to 61 wins his rookie year and there was no Parish, McKale, DJ, or Ainge on that team, just the same guys who won only 29 plus Larry Bird.
Greatest one year win improvement by ANY team in NBA history and it came because of the addition of a rookie.
It proved that Bird carrying a bunch of no-name players at Indiana State to a undefeated season, slaying one giant after another during March madness until that 1979 NCAA championship game was no fluke.
What he did at sad sack Indiana State has never been repeated and what he did his rookie year at (then) sad sack Boston has never been repeated.
There is a reason for that, a very precise reason...BECAUSE NO ONE SINCE HAS BEEN AS GOOD AS BIRD AND THEREFORE COULDN'T DO THOSE THINGS AND DIDN'T DO THOSE THINGS.
You will never see another Larry Joe Bird.

Larry's first year with the celtics wasn't exactly without any other talent. Yes, he improved the team, but there were already other hall of fame players there. The big change was the NEXT year, when Kevin McHale and Robert Parish arrived to for the most formidable front court for the 1980's.

I don't know what any players stats are, all i know is that anybdody who played basketball against prime time Larry Bird would have every reason to panic like you wouldn't beleive, if he dominated Dr, J every time he played against him what makes he couldn't use his basketball intelligence to school Lebron, especially in the post season where Lebron chocked many times, watching clips of Bird play speaks entirely for itself.

Hang on, now. When Bird was drafted, he still had one year of college eligibility left. And he made it very clear that he was going to play it. The other teams that didn't draft him didn't want to take the risk that they would draft him and he wouldn't sign. Of COURSE it was a big risk for Red. But that was Red.
Jump high? Look at him. First, he's 6'10" easily. Next, look how many times his height advantaged him.
Julius saved the league. (Just as he'd sustained the ABA.) But Larry and Magic re-created the league.
The GOAT? No. Sorry, Michael, but that is Wilt. But the most talented player? Duh.
