"Airplane!' is an almost shot for shot comedic reworking of a straight dramatic airplane disaster film called "Zero Hour!" (1957) starring Dana Andrews.
Trivia: The old guy in the Taxi was played by Howard Jarvis the California property tax crusader who was largely responsible for the passage of Proposition 13 which limited property taxes. Also, smoking was allowed on Airplanes. First anywhere, and eventually only in a rear smoking section. And every seat had a little built-in ashtray.
The "Jim, never has a second cup of coffee at home," line is taken directly from a coffee commercial at the time. Folgers, I think. And that's the actress who was in the same commercial. As for the cat who played Johnny, he was allowed to write all of his own lines.
The man washing the plane's windows who cries out as he falls is Jimmie Walker in a cameo role. He was the star of a recently cancelled sitcom called "Good Times" and was known for his catchphrase "Dyn-o-mite!"
Love Ketty, she just just jumped right in like she's been doing this forever. It's not an easy movie to understand if you don't know the historical references and she caught more than most. Great job.
When I went in to the outpatient clinic for a wound check, it turned out that I was going into toxic shock from a post-op infection that had gone septic, so the doctor called in paramedics to transport me to the ER across the street and told me "We have to admit your to the hospital!" I asked her "Hospital? What is it?" and when she gave me a gave me the straight medical answer, I told her "You were supposed to say 'It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now." She was too young to understand the reference, but one of the paramedics did get the joke. Considering I was about to go to the ER then Intensive Care, I thought I was keeping a pretty good sense of humor about the situation.
Definitely one of the most influential comedy movies ever. I love the fact that every time the jet is shown flying it’s making a propeller driven airplane sound
The woman who spoke Jive was Barbara Billingsly who was famous for playing June Cleaver on "Leave it to Beaver" from the 1950s. She didn't like how shows like hers portrayed families in an unrealistic ideology where everyone was happy, and the wives had dinner on the table when the husband came home from work. They also portrayed every problem solved in under 30 minutes. She regained a huge popularity from doing Airplane and it revived her career. She went on to have a great career until she died in 2010 at 94 years old.
Great reaction! If Ketty has not seen "The Naked Gun" yet I highly recommend watching that film. It stars the very funny Leslie Nielson, who played the doctor in Airplane. "The Naked Gun" is also directed by the same guys who did "Airplane". You will love it 😊😊
Some of the stuff might be lost on you guys. Like the " mayo" clinic where the heart was jumping on the desk. The mayo clinic is a very famous hospital here. Is in Rochester Minnesota. Also the old woman who speaks " jive" to the two black men played one of the most wholesome mothers on American TV ever. Her name is Barbara billingsly her character name was " June cleaver" in the " leave it to Beaver" series.
You guys reaction to the "I take it black, like my men" moment was one of the best, the look on the boys face is always just the cherry on top, as that scene is my favorite(it never gets old).
Most of the comedy is timeless, but a few jokes were a sign of the times- when the wife says "Jim never takes a second cup of coffee at home" that was a play on a string of frequent commercials at the time where, if I remember correctly, the wife was embarrassed about not buying the right product and the listener got to hear her thoughts. A modern version of this is the SNL Tostitos sketch with the catchphrase "Anything for my hungry guys".
Few notice, but there is a gag in the entire film I didn’t notice for years. The background sound has a propeller engine sound when it’s a jet engine plane.
Proud of you both for watching this absolutely American cult classic comedy. For any immigrant or foreigner that tries to tackle this, they always miss "inside jokes" based on pop culture of the time. You know who else misses a lot of the jokes? Young Americans! LoL. I've seen reaction videos by Americans where the "Boy's Life" magazine or coffee jokes or even Kareem / basketball humor fly right over their heads. ( Pardon the pun. )
Fun Fact on the Saturday Night Fever Spoof: While he was doing Airplane, actor Robert Hays (Ted Striker) was also doing a short lived sitcom called Angie and his Angie Co-Star Donna Pescow was in Saturday Night Fever. There is a sequel to Airplane called Airplane 2 The Sequel which is also worth a look just to see William Shatner steal the show.
Oh dear Heavens, finally, you watch this golden age Gem!! Also, don't forget to watch the end credits for the little jokes and gags the authors put in. And Yes, Airplane had an End Credit Scene way before Marvel ever thought of it!
Love it, both look very beautiful in this!! Love your exotic accents as well 🙂 And this movie is hilarious, one of my favorites!! 🙂 Don't forget, there is a Part 2, called "Airplane 2: The Sequel" 🙂
1. I guess I picked the wrong week to stop watching "first time reaction" Airplane clips. 2. This movie requires more than one watch in order to catch as much as possible. Little things to look for: Ted was in the Air Force but at the bar he's wearing a Navy Lt. uniform. Elaine's trombone at the bar sounds like a trumpet. One of the fish was a freshwater catfish. A woman throws a baby into the air when the plane crashes through the window. Two Hari Krishnas actually fly out of the airport. There are raindrops gathered on a high speed airplane. Captain Kramer steps out of a mirror before leaving for the airport. The woman with the horse in bed is the creepy Captain Oveur's wife. She is also hitting on to Captain Kramer. It's a jet but the background noise is of a prop plane. The ambulance crashes after the plane lands. 3. Otto/Auto pilot has his own webpage on IMDB 4. Elaine has permission to sit on MY face.😝😈 5. IMVHO Airplane II is good too, destination moon.
kareem abdul-jabbar was one of if not the greatest Basketball players to ever live....he was also a Student of Bruce Lee's He started acting as a villain in some Bruce Lee's films
No they don't. Watching the same movies again and again and again and again on TH-cam make one feel like they're stuck in a timeloop. There's no reason to rush rewatches for Mich. Let them occur naturally. Fresh movies for both are much better for the viewer and help the channel grow to new audiences.
Hey, mich. I take it you are getting Ketty caught up on all the movies you have seen, and she hasn't. What a friend you are. Don't forget to watch the rest of the SAW movies.
I don't think I have ever heard anyone describe Airplane as lovely before, hilarious, side-splitting, outrageous, funny, ridiculous, absurd yes but never lovely.
You two did well for people who have no knowledge of American culture and politics of the time. I have yet to see a reactor catch the gag of the propeller sounds throughout the flight, though they are flying a jet plane.
It's not true though; they had a consultant on the film who told them that was already a rule. They said 'if they don't eat the same thing, we don't have a movie'. I think the story was on the DVD extras.
The plot of Airplane! is based on a 1957 movie called Zero Hour. It's got pretty much the exact same story (including the food poisoning part), except its not a comedy.
23:46 I love that Michelle actual thought about it.. "Ouch!" ha ha ha Here's the perfect song for her.. tee hee!! th-cam.com/video/52i14wYBef8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=VmcB9r6kDz_qplLY&t=48
"Airplane!" spoofs "Airport" (with George Kennedy of 'Naked Gun';) movie w: jumbo jet crashin' airport windows! & lots more exaggerated dangers of 'Airport's dramas!

plames were better when they had smoking 'cause they would pump fresh air into the plane,
now they recycle the air
The "Jim, never has a second cup of coffee at home," line is taken directly from a coffee commercial at the time. Folgers, I think. And that's the actress who was in the same commercial. As for the cat who played Johnny, he was allowed to write all of his own lines.
Not Folger's coffee. Yuban.
You stopped too soon. There's a post-credits scene where the guy in the taxi says, "I'll give him another 20 minutes, but that's it."
The man washing the plane's windows who cries out as he falls is Jimmie Walker in a cameo role. He was the star of a recently cancelled sitcom called "Good Times" and was known for his catchphrase "Dyn-o-mite!"
Paramount wanted comedians & maker were like, 'no, it'll be a disaster'
so they agree to have Jimmie as the comedian
Love Ketty, she just just jumped right in like she's been doing this forever. It's not an easy movie to understand if you don't know the historical references and she caught more than most. Great job.

Definitely one of the most influential comedy movies ever. I love the fact that every time the jet is shown flying it’s making a propeller driven airplane sound
Ted's PTSD flashback scenes depict WWII aircraft.
This is, as others have noted, because it's a remake of a 1950s film called Zero Hour!, in which the aircraft was propeller-driven

Another trivia fact is the voices arguing over the PA are the same voices that made those announcements at LAX at the time.
the "eggs in the mouth" is an old fashioned magic trick
Great reaction! If Ketty has not seen "The Naked Gun" yet I highly recommend watching that film. It stars the very funny Leslie Nielson, who played the doctor in Airplane. "The Naked Gun" is also directed by the same guys who did "Airplane". You will love it 😊😊
I just wanna tell you both, good luck. We’re all counting on you.
I just wanted to tell you both, good luck. We're all counting on you.
I just wanted to tell you both, good luck. We're all counting on you.
You keep repeating the same line? You don't realize the plane already landed? Surely, you can't be serious.
@@davidsmith8283 I am serious. And don't call me Shirley.
"You don't check the oil before the flight". NO. And the engine isn't under the bonnet either. (They're on the wings) 🤣🤣🤣
The 'mechanic' that was checking that oil is Jimmie 'JJ' Walker. He was famous for saying "dyn-o-mite" on the "Good Times" TV show
Leslie Nielsen is such a legend in comedy, surely a treasure...and don't call me "Shirley" 😂
And this film was his first comedic role. He had been a dramatic actor until then.
The nun with the guitar is not a random gag. There actually was one in the serious disaster movie, "Airport 1975."
Some of the stuff might be lost on you guys. Like the " mayo" clinic where the heart was jumping on the desk. The mayo clinic is a very famous hospital here. Is in Rochester Minnesota. The black pilot is famous 7ft tall Los Angeles Lakers basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar he played with Magic Johnson in the 70s,80’s
You guys reaction to the "I take it black, like my men" moment was one of the best, the look on the boys face is always just the cherry on top, as that scene is my favorite(it never gets old).
The co-pilot was the real Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Basketball legend.
The joke is he was acting a different man, but the kid sees through it.
Yeah they break the fourth wall
I just want to tell you both good luck we're all counting on you.
I just want to tell you both good luck we're all counting on you.
1980 is actually ten years before the 90's
Most of the comedy is timeless, but a few jokes were a sign of the times- when the wife says "Jim never takes a second cup of coffee at home" that was a play on a string of frequent commercials at the time where, if I remember correctly, the wife was embarrassed about not buying the right product and the listener got to hear her thoughts. A modern version of this is the SNL Tostitos sketch with the catchphrase "Anything for my hungry guys".
The woman speaking jive is Barbara Billingsley. She is best known for playing June Clever, the mother, on the "Leave It to Beaver" TV series.
The jet airliner made propeller noises throughout the entire movie! 😂
hahahaha Kitty it's gonna love this movie hahahaha I can't stop laughing 😆
The 2. Not so good
NONE of them yet have noticed the guy walking through the mirror at that woman's home when the dog is attacking the other guy! 😂
Few notice, but there is a gag in the entire film I didn’t notice for years. The background sound has a propeller engine sound when it’s a jet engine plane.

The "zipper" speech is a parody of the "Win one for the Gipper" speech given by Ronald Reagan in the movie based on a real life football player.
Boys Life was very much a real magazine.
Ketty is a wonderful and may I say beautiful addition to the Homies. I love her reaction to comedy. 😂😅❤❤
Only a few people get that most had food poisoning except the woman in the beginning. She had bird flew (flu).....LMAO
Oh dear Heavens, finally, you watch this golden age Gem!! Also, don't forget to watch the end credits for the little jokes and gags the authors put in. And Yes, Airplane had an End Credit Scene way before Marvel ever thought of it!
What do you mean finally? Mich, Elle and Lia just watched this 2 years ago.
You ladies didn't disappoint with your reaction to the little girl's line :D
I love the reactions with Michelle and Kelly. It's amazing.
Love it, both look very beautiful in this!! Love your exotic accents as well 🙂 And this movie is hilarious, one of my favorites!! 🙂 Don't forget, there is a Part 2, called "Airplane 2: The Sequel" 🙂
You Two are super cute, also, this came out in 1980. Awesome reaction
28:31 It's Mike from Breaking Bad!
Not from the 90s. It's a film very much of the late 70s released in 1980.
1. I guess I picked the wrong week to stop watching "first time reaction" Airplane clips.
2. This movie requires more than one watch in order to catch as much as possible. Little things to look for:

Airplane is from the early 80’s. Not the 90’s.
Yes, they say that 3 seconds after one mistakenly says 90s. I guess that wasn't fast enough.
Your mom wasn’t fast enough.
kareem abdul-jabbar was one of if not the greatest Basketball players to ever live....he was also a Student of Bruce Lee's He started acting as a villain in some Bruce Lee's films
Ketty's a nice addition to the Homies. Got to get her all caught up on the movies. Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile should be next.
No they don't. Watching the same movies again and again and again and again on TH-cam make one feel like they're stuck in a timeloop. There's no reason to rush rewatches for Mich. Let them occur naturally. Fresh movies for both are much better for the viewer and help the channel grow to new audiences.
18:52 many people miss how it's supposed to be a mirror then the assumed reflection steps through the assumed mirror.
Some people, especially foreign reactors, don't notice or understand the bottles of mayonnaise in the background... Mayo clinic
Yes, that is Kareem Abdul Jabbar, one of the greatest basketball players of all time playing the co-pilot.
Hey, mich. I take it you are getting Ketty caught up on all the movies you have seen, and she hasn't. What a friend you are. Don't forget to watch the rest of the SAW movies.
The rest of the SAW movies are absolute trash.
I don't think I have ever heard anyone describe Airplane as lovely before, hilarious, side-splitting, outrageous, funny, ridiculous, absurd yes but never lovely.
Sorry, ladies but that dance is from the Seventies. He was emulating John Travolta from "Saturday Night Fever."
At the end of the closing credits, the guy in the taxi is still waiting.
They watched it.
Great reaction to the take some pictures joke.
You two did well for people who have no knowledge of American culture and politics of the time. I have yet to see a reactor catch the gag of the propeller sounds throughout the flight, though they are flying a jet plane.
This film was shot in 1979
9:05… this scene always gets me 😂
Kareem Abdul-Jabar played for the Los Angeles Lakers among others.
Airplane 2 is the sequel.
Ladies. He was a real basketball player.
You missed the scene after the end credits!
And yet another reactor misses the after credit scene lol, although Ketty did have a psychic moment about it.
Rodger the co-pilot was a famous basketball player
Man, I was hoping for them to get at least 50% of the jokes
The story is because of this movie the FAA came up with a rule that the pilots can't eat the same meal.
You should watch Top Secret from the same directors
Shirley, you haven't seen this before.
23:46 I love that Michelle actual thought about it.. "Ouch!" ha ha ha Here's the perfect song for her.. tee hee!! th-cam.com/video/52i14wYBef8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=VmcB9r6kDz_qplLY&t=48
Ketty, do you like movies about gladiators? ;)
I’ve never seen this movie before and I’m really excited to watch it with you two!!
Y'all are adorable
I just wanna wish Kitty good luck. We’re all counting on u. 👌
Great video.
Silly Goodness
Hate to correct you, but this movie goes farther back than the 90's.
Calling 80s old school. 😅
You guys missed about half of the references but you are young. Its a parody. But I am a new subscriber. Good luck!!
This is not from the 90's... It's 1980.
i wonder why foreign reactors tend to think that these movies were made in later years than they were
Watch Tomb Raider both old & new
Reaction videos are the welfare of TH-cam but I guess it beats working for a living.
Funny movie
Can you please do a reaction to the 2002 Hanukkah Animated Movie, Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights?
You didn't watch the credits that have some funny things in them nor did you show the end credit scene.
90’s? 🙄🙈🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Not happy
Is it just me, or does Michelle seem a little less wild than she used to be?
Movie form the 90s? Lolwut
"Airplane!" spoofs "Airport" (with George Kennedy of 'Naked Gun';) movie w: jumbo jet crashin' airport windows! & lots more exaggerated dangers of 'Airport's dramas!
its actually a spoof of the film Zero Hour.
