I know there's a lot of passionate Lumix people here but please watch the whole video, a lot of this stuff I mention especially with the AF has been addressed in the new firmware release (this video was filmed before that firmware was announced).
You mention the fact that it has photography dials that you don’t use but in all honesty this camera was not made for you, despite stronger video features it is still a hybrid camera that puts out amazing photos. The issues you have really are minor ones and that makes me even happier that I chose this camera.
Tally lights? Seriously? He he he...another more than happy user here!
I’m not saying I’m not happy with it. But again, if I wanted a photo based camera I’d get the S5II. The x just needed a bit more video based stuff over the II
Hybrid implies that it's good both. I don't believe it's a good video camera. As someone who uses this on a daily basis for both photography and videography, I find that for most of my corporate and Commercial work I am reaching for my 2 gh6s instead of this.
I think it needs a lot of work on the video side to be a true hybrid camera, not just with the specs or anything but also with the body layout. What they should have done was created one camera, with all of these features, and not created the two separately. It just seems like too much of a marketing gimmick.

I really think you are mistaken when you make this bold statement, because this camera is close to a cinema cam.
Maybe the ease of use is less than a GH-model, but saying that it isn't a good videocamera makes me scratch my head.
@@jeremypope-levison721What more do you need it to do? As far as full frame Hybrid cameras go, the S5iix is near perfect and a much better argument than any other camera in its price range and even above it
Autofocus loose you face in focus because of face detect autofocus 😅. I know it sounds dumb, but with body tracking mode its detect face better than with face only.
Lags on playback files is related to SD Card. That why they have list od recomended card.
Pretty minor annoyances, i also have the s5iix and the only thing that bothers me is the 4k crop and lack of fx buttons. Also own a gh6 and the button setup on that cam is great, also it does have a tally light.
The GH6 is an absolute BEAST of a camera! So underrated, it's criminal

I think in some ways the S5IIX is kind of a victim of its own strengths. It has so much good video stuff that you really can't help but look at it as a higher-end video-focused tool, more along the lines of an S1H, GH series, etc.... instead of what it is, a hopped-up mid-range hybrid camera. Which isn't really fair, of course, to judge it that way, but it's natural when it outshines those higher-end cams in so many important ways. I think the S2 or S2H or whatever the next camera is, is more likely to have all those little quality-of-life improvements, as it should as it will probably be at least 50% more expensive.
I also think it's a little unfair to say the X doesn't have enough distinguishing it from the regular S5II; the intra-frame codecs are the #2 reason why I spent the money to upgrade from my S1 (AF being #1 obviously). The streaming stuff is lost on me but it's super valuable for some people; same for the USB-SSD out. I think that's all significant for $200 more (or really, free, for those who would be buying the raw license for the S5II anyways). Personally I actually am not a fan of the black-out finish; I have always taped the front logos on my cams and I like that look, but the dark print on the dials is kind of a PITA in dimmer light.
I agree. People assumed the X was akin to the H line of LUMIX cameras but it really isn’t. Had they called it the S5iiH then you would’ve got tally lights, time code etc but at a much higher price point. LUMIX had a clear market and price point they were aiming these cameras at and found the perfect balance for hybrid shooters.

I have to challenge you on the focus you are experiencing, but in a nice way :)
The camera shouldn't do that, my experience is not matching yours. I would go thru a check-list kinda like a pilot does on take-off. I actually have experienced autofocus problems but I have always been able to solve them and it has always been user error. User error is easy to do on this camera because of all the settings so don't settle for the focus you are seeing on your talking head videos.

No biggie, it would just annoy the heck out of me if my camera did that on such a simple task like sitting down and talking to it! Actually I probably would send it back lol.

You can't use the AF lamp because it is TOO BRIGHT. it will affect the image - its an autofocus lamp. it's use is to brighten the image for the AF.
I think he was suggesting maybe it could be adjusted in firmware to be a dimmer light to use as a tally light. Frankly, I've never like having a tally light because it causes the subject to be that bit more aware that the camera is recording. I prefer to set up the camera(s) first so that the people after a short time forget that it is there before i hit record with the remote.
I own the S5ll and the ll-X isn't worlds apart, me knowing about the slightly more advanced videos features. As far as my camera goes it's still a hybrid for photo.and video, otherwise I would love to have a low pass filter on the sensor to decrease the sharpness, but what's bad for videos is okay for photo. I can live with the crop in 4k 60 but would be happier doesn't have to deal with that.
What I find out with starting up the camera is, that it takes the longest time when the first time in the day, with getting a bit faster during the day. My G9 is way faster but writing to the card in photo mode is slower...so it's always a trade of 😅
I hope they do a firmware fix that gives Phase Detect Auto-Focus in 1080 - 120fps. That would be pretty cool to see 💯
OMG have you used the FX30? THe LACK of basic photography modes is what made me sell that piece of junk. It is utterly (and needlessly) crippled in stills mode. THe S5ii is a wonderful TRUE HYBRID. There is absolutely no need to remove A and P from the mode dial! you have 5 custom modes - how many do you need?
You absolutely COULD remove the P and "iA" and SQ modes on the dials. Those could be nested in the menu or somewhere else as i don't think many people use them regularly.
It’s in Sony’s CINEMA LINE. Why would you expect a ‘cinema camera’ to perform fantastic in ‘stills photography’? Never heard of the A6700? It’s designed for stills and video. Only an imbecile buys the wrong tool and then blames the tool instead of addressing the foolishness of the one who bought the wrong tool.
It's funny... I recently bought a GH5 because I wanted a backup for my S5, (the original), which is my main camera, and I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money, so I found a GH5 for $467. Crazy thing is, the more I use it, the more I LOVE it. I feel like this GH5 is more video-centric than some of the newer cameras, less a "hybrid". One big thing for me is unlimited recording in any recording mode. c4k, 4k, anything, which is so awesome, (and the only thing I don't like about my s5). Also, I can shoot straight 24fps, which makes it easier to make DCP for theatrical/festival stuff. And to me, the image coming out of the GH5 is beautiful. I can easily match it to my s5, and the s5 is cinema level, no doubt, and so, being someone who uses autofocus pretty much never, all my lenses are either vintage or anamorphic, I feel no need to upgrade to the ii or iix. I ALMOST bought a used s1h because I DID have an aliasing/moire issue a few times with the s5, so an olpf would be awesome, and I also looked at the GH5s for that, but at the end of the day and for the price, I feel like I struck gold with the GH5. Paired with my S5, I'm really pleased with this setup. Great video as always....

@@murph6547 for me they match very well. The log in the gh5 is really good, as long as you expose everything properly
@@murph6547 you can definitely match the colors really well, especially if you're good with your color grading and color correction. The one thing I will say is that the v-log in the gh5 is not nearly as powerful as the log in the S5. I think the dynamic range in the S5 is much better, but having said that, I have absolutely no complaints about the gh5, it puts out beautiful footage for sure.

After years of using borrowed cams and an old T3i...I saved for a new camera. I´m videographer and photographer. And in my research before buying this was the best camera in market for hybrid shooters. I think this is not the camera you need bro, he he. Because it has tools that you don´t need, and don´t have some that you need. It´s just not for your workflow as I can understand. But it´s so perfect for me! i love eberything of it. Of course, it´s not perfect. it´s relativelly cheap...it´s an amazng camera and will rule the middle hybrid gama for years in my opinion.

A cheap fix for the tally light issue is to buy a wireless shutter release remote/receiver with a tally light on it. The receiver mounts on the hot/cold shoe and the light turns red when the record button is pressed on the remote. Amazon has one for $55.

Nikon ranks above Fujifilm in terms of AF too. Fujifilm is kind of tied with Ricoh and Leica AF.

@@nigelbarrostoo Maybe their acquisition of RED will mix up the video market. We might see Nikon rise from obscurity in the next decade. 😂
As straight photography cameras go they're on par with any other brand sporting a Sony sensor. One thing to note for the Fuji people watching, once Lumix pull out a new camera, forget about getting new features via firmware updates. They can't be bothered.
Let me make something clear: Phase Detection Autofocus has nothing to do with Facial Recognition.
The way you explain things (01:44) one may think that this has something to do with the human face.
He was talking about Face Detection, not Phase...
@@bingbong4848 Face Detection doesn't exist in camera terminology and he was referring to the new focusing system of Panasonic, because they always held on to the Contrast Detection Autofocus.
@MarioCastillion Yes, Autofocus uses Contrast or Phase detection, or both.
However, he was referring to the Face Detection/Face Priority setting that can be selected where the camera will focus on face/faces in the selected area. There are also focus options for Eye/ Animals/Body/Cars/Bikes and maybe more, in addition to Face.

By the way I worked for more than a year with the S5, so I also know those features you're talking about.
The Phase Detection Autofocus was not in the S5 model, but in the two models after (the S5II and the S5IIx).

S5IIX only does ProRes 1080P internal???

It does 4K ProRes internally (without external recording devise) but you have to use an SSD in the USB-C port
Sony does the mode dial best with PASM and then a sub dial for photo and video.
