Joshua Chapple Arts You know, I didn't notice that until you said it. I don't think she is losing musicality because I believe that has more to do with the singer's mind and imagination on how they use their voice. However, I believe you are correct that she doesn't perform as many jazzy vocals as she used to. Lately she has been singing more churchy songs such as hymns and "I call you holy." Maybe that has something to do with it. Who really knows besides Kim?
I believe that all the controversy has driven her more deeply into her passion which is expressed in her music ministry. Life will drive you higher into your passions when you chose not to be over taken by circumstances.
Yes maam!!! She was one of her vocal inspirations!! Its evident!! @Nox Eath So sorry but Kim's melisma is second to none, - that includes the legendary MC - & I've listened to virtually every single MC song from Vanishing to lead the way to Oh Santa. I would put MC in top 3 though. LOL Kim and MC are both farrr superior riffers to Bey i'm afraid. As a piano player Kim has the better ear, hence the ability to construct the most unpredictable and inventive runs on the planet - all Live too! The only thing you could argue is MC was technically more 'agile' in her prime (albeit not by much) but by NO means better. Kim is also one of few who can execute upward runs just as precisely. With MC, as good as she is, she has never really been able to replicate her greatest studio runs live since 1997 (the year her voice took a massive hit). I would argue her best run is from Lead the Way, which again she has never accomplished live. Since 1997 to this day her desire to be perfect has forced her to create studio runs and crazy fast studio-produced whistle runs that she cannot produce live, e.g. oh santa. MC virtually has zero agility today, by way of nodules, oversinging/not taking care of the voice etc - Today Kim would riff circles around MC.

There's an octave below that is audible when she does that raspy/growl type thing (not sure what the technical name is, I'm not a singer), or is it just me?
There are 2 kinds of vocal chords in our throats, the first kind that produces the head voice / normal singing voice, and there’s the second kind that produces vocal fry, which produces the raspy growl. The cool thing is that the second type that makes the vocal fry resonates at a speed that is exactly one octave below our first type of vocal chords. So you are 100% correct, and this is how a lot of bass and baritone singers can get so low, they practice only singing with their second vocal chords.
