Introducing a NEW DOG to your dog

  • This video covers how to introduce a new puppy or adult dog to your other dog or dogs in your household. It covers techniques to use for dogs who do have issues with meeting other dogs and are not happy go lucky easy dogs.
    Unless you have an extremely calm, social and confident dog, when first meeting another dog, especially in a situation that he is not used to, it can cause him to feel stressed and excited. This excitement can sometimes cause a dog to over react or act unpredictably. So the safest method for preventing the dogs from having a negative experience during their first encounters is to break up the steps so the dogs feel safe and confident every step of the way.
    Having the dogs settle first at a distance and then closer together is a great way to reinforce the dogs for being calm in each other’s presence. What can happen if you have a puppy whose first experiences are with playing with the other dog when meeting, it can be harder to teach the puppy that the sight of the other dog isn’t the invitation to play and bother that dog.

    I am so glad I found your videos! We are getting a Boxer mix puppy this weekend, and I am really stressed about introducing the puppy to our 5 year old, female, Doberman. She has been an only dog for a year and a half (since losing our Boxer to cancer). She loved her brother, but I worry how she is going to handle a puppy. She was a puppy when we brought her home to our 4 year old Boxer. I have introduced her to other dogs and she seems okay with them and not at all aggressive, but they have never been in her home. My husband is not helpful when it comes to working with or training our dogs, so it all falls on my shoulders.

    Thank you for this. Given how my rough collie and the family basset were when I brought my collie home back in July, I though something had to have gone wrong. This and another I've seen on TH-cam has helped to confirm it. Hopefully if I get another in future years (which is almost certain given how much I like my rough collie) or possibly a border collie things will go smoother.

    Very good video again! Any ideas on making your dog friend to your cat?? Our cat was here first and was very friendly with our puppy from the beginning. Unfortunately as Indy grew the situation changed: our cat is very afraid of him now because he plays quite wildly with him and chases him in the garden like crazy. Whenever I am present I can control the situation more or less (and click and treat when he behaves nicely) but when I leave or just turn my head and the cat starts to run, chasing starts all over again. :((( I thought they would become friends if grow up together but it seems our dog is an exception. Are you maybe planning to make a video on this topic??

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No I am extremely allergic to cats but the basic idea is to work on training set ups where you teach your puppy to leave you cat when he runs- you could have one person throwing treats for the cat at a distance and another working with the dog at a distance at first. th-cam.com/video/6jYfKK17ZBs/w-d-xo.html this video leave it from dogs can be converted into leave it from cats

      @@kikopup Oh how I hope to! When talking with the man on the phone before going to meet the dogs, he was telling me the two smaller ones sleep in their crates at night. I asked if they were big enough for me to sleep in there too! I plan on sleeping on the couch in the glass-walled room where the crates are (they are big enough for me). He said it was OK to do that AND to let them on the couch with me. But alas, he said the Great Pyrenees MUST remain outside. sigh

    Hello! We are preparing our current ESS to be a big brother to another ESS puppy in two months so I have been binging your content haha. Our adult pup is not aggressive at all but he is very energetic and is leash reactive with other dogs (he's gotten better over lots of training) because he wants to play so badly. We have a smaller place that is 2 levels and we plan to use barriers but I am wondering if you have tips to help my adult energetic dog to be successful in this scenario because he will literally play all day if he could haha and I feel like even with the barriers he might cry and be stressed. Also any tips for sleeping arrangements as our current dog sleeps on the floor I our bedroom. I have a partner who is helping me with the transition too.
    I love your content so much thank you so much for sharing so much information to be able to give our dogs a happy life!

    Great video, full of useful info. But how do you have 4-5 dogs and at least one of them isn't trying to get your attention, climbing on you, licking you etc. while you're doing anything @home? Also I'm guessing that the daybed was intentionally put there for the dogs, which is great.

    I love all of your training methods!!! I volunteer with the Arizona Humane Society and your information helps so much with shelter animals. Do you have any advice for training blind dogs? My 6 year old Cocker had an eye removed 4 months ago from Glaucoma and now the other eye needs to come out due to the pressure. She's navigating her surroundings pretty well with her blindness, but we've had 2 dog fights due to her "sitting on one of my other dogs" in the "occupied" dog bed. They aren't understanding that their sister can't see anymore. It makes them a little nervous. I'm trying to use verbal cues and scent markers on walls and items around the house, for target areas, danger zones and pathways..

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My friend miki has a site : blinddogtraining.com/ I suggest perhaps getting raised dog beds for the non blind dogs, or dog beds with tall rims. Then the dog bed for the blind dog, or beds, only the blind dog can be allowed to sleep on, and they are always in the same location. Then you can train the dog to only go to those beds and not the other ones with the other dogs in them.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Naga, you can still build positive experiences and train them new default behaviors to do around each other. I suggest working on the cue "leave it" first with food and toys, and then start using that cue with the dog who is bullying, you can say "leave it" and then "go to your bed" etc, when you see the dog start to want to intimidate the other. Here is a video on how to teach leave it from other dogs. th-cam.com/video/6jYfKK17ZBs/w-d-xo.html

      @@kikopup thank you, you are the best. We have had some trouble this days because we sterelized our older dog and Mika {the rescue) has been bullying her.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would suggest you begin by teaching the younger dog for the moment, that the other dog is a "default leave it" at all times. That the dog should ignore that dog and when he doesnt interrupt it, so if you see the dog look at the other for longer than 2 seconds or start to walk toward the other dog. You can also work on them settling on mats etc. By first learning to ignore and be calm in the other dogs presence you can then start slowly adding more guided social interactions, but some dogs can just learn to coexist and not have to play. Instead they can have play dates with other dogs.

    How do you know when it's safe to remove the barrier or room separation between the dogs when you leave the house? Especially if the older dog has had issues with not being confident around or correcting the puppy? For example with Wish, when do you know leaving the puppy and her together alone won't create an issue? Is it about the puppy reaching a certain stage in training or is it about the older dog being calm around the puppy?

      Exercise pens secured to the wall and the white one I really like (I dont sponsor products this is just my honest opinion) is the You & Me Convertible Walk-Thru Pet Gate and Play Yard, 144" W x 28" H from Petco, I was surprised by how well made it was. I added fuzzy stickers to the bottoms of where it made contact with my floor to prevent scratching. It screws into the walls and provides a very secure barrier. And I think looks pretty so I leave it up even when I dont need it. It's great for when I have dogs or kids over, and dont want to have to manage Wish around them. Obviously with all barriers, dogs could jump over if they really wanted to so you really have to train them and only have them loose behind the barriers when you know it will be safe for them.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on the dog. Sometimes I let halo and bliss play an hour. What you want to see is it’s soft and gentle if it keeps going on like they are laying and just pawing at eachother rather than play that’s going to hurt their bodies. Also see if their stressed after if so then it was too much. Some dogs you never have to interrupt. Like bliss they know when it’s enough. Others
      Like my tiny dogs can get over excited and I sometimes still end their play becuase it’s getting too excited

    My family got a new puppy a couple of weeks ago and we're having a hard time getting our old dog, Teddy, to adjust to him. Teddy is a five-year old maltipoo, and the puppy is a cavapoo, so the energy levels are quite different, and obviously even more so since one's a puppy. Teddy seems fine around the puppy when he's not too close, but when he gets too close or starts jumping on him and wanting to play, Teddy starts growling and biting at him. Do you have any recommendations for how to get the puppy to calm down when Teddy's around, and how to get Teddy to stop growling at him?

    • @iShoppd
      @iShoppd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Niamh Batstone
      Exercise your high energy puppy before any interaction/training sessions involving Teddy. Add more distance/barriers if Teddy is uncomfortable/growling. Keep the puppy on a leash if he’s near Teddy so it’s easy to create distance. The growling and biting is Teddy communicating discomfort because he doesn’t trust people to stop the interaction. If someone doesn’t interrupt/distract the puppy and respect Teddy’s personal space, he will discipline the puppy himself violently. I don’t recommend letting this happen as someone will get hurt. (Teddy may even grow to enjoy disciplining human children if you let this behavior continue.) #giveTeddySpace2019 Teddy didn’t sign up to be your puppy sitter. If you can’t put the time and effort in to respect Teddy’s space and separate them when unsupervised, you may need to rehome a dog.
