Cuttin' It with Coffee: Episode 2 - Manix 2 Model Comparison

    Musing about the Spyderco Manix 2 in a couple of it's iterations over a casual cup of coffee.
    My first, a Lightweight model in CPM-SPY27 and the requisite cyan FRN handles, now belongs to a friend who graciously allowed me to borrow it back. My second and currently the only I own; a "blurple" G10 model in CPM-s110v steel.
    I'll discuss some of the differences and my experiences with them. What makes one better than the other for certain tasks? Why would someone want a heavier knife? Why would anyone want a knife you can't take apart easily with a couple Torx bits? 🤔
    Some people love this knife. Some people can't stand any Spyderco. How do you feel about the 'Manix 2' in G10 or the lightweight in FRN? Which steel did you get yours in?
    Thanks for watching. I hope you enjoyed your coffee. Stay well. GG...out.

      It's a great knife, for sure. I wish it didn't eat up my hands for fidgeting with it so much. But, it shouldn't be so fidgety if it doesn't want me messing with it. 🤣 Thanks for watching, Marcos! Stay well.

    I'd like to check out a manix 2. I have the xl and it's a monster. I do enjoy it but don't carry it alot because of the size in pocket. Great video brother 👍

    • @GrumpyGrunt
      @GrumpyGrunt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can only imagine the XL is even more of a pocket hog, but I've never handled one. The regular Manix 2 is plenty of knife for whatever I need to do with my folders. It's a heluva knife though. Stay well, brother.

    Got a Manix 2 LW, my only Spyderco. Yeah, it chews up fingertips, thought it was only me. I do wish the scales were removable but still it's pretty good. I may have to get a PM3 for comparison purposes.
    Thanks for the insights, GG.

    • @GrumpyGrunt
      @GrumpyGrunt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I figured it was mainly because I am getting old/thin skinned and my callouses are gone. The Para 3 is a great knife I find as useful, less bulky and more fidgety than my Manix 2. It's just not quite as heavy duty. Take care over there, Dave!

    I wouldn't have guessed that it hurted on the fingers, the axislock knives i have don't really hurt. Thank you for an insight in the Manix 2 Grumpy.

    • @GrumpyGrunt
      @GrumpyGrunt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I fidget at a ridiculous level. I try to get that across in videos because it is an important aspect of folding knives to me. I like axis locks a bit more than the Manix 2 for fidgeting, but the Manix is a workhorse. I actually have a bit of an issue with the axis locks, too. At least my 'Centri' from Asher wears on my fingers after a while; both the axis lock and the thumb studs. The Amare 'Field Bro' has smoother studs on both and doesn't bother me as much. The Manix 2 and the axis locks are all great knives, though. They just limit my fidgeting with textured/knurled surfaces which hurt my fingers.
      Thanks for watching, Jeroen. Stay well over there.

      @@GrumpyGrunt You have a problem Grumpy, it's called fidgetitis! I does happen sometimes by people who love to play around with their knives and can't stop themselves anymore. The way to treat fidgetitis is after 15 minutes take another knife and fidget with that one for 15 minutes. Be sure it has another way to fidget and not the same knife only with other handle materials. After 30 minutes take a 15 minute break( you may use a traditional knife but nothing fancy flippin") Then you have 15 minutes of handling a fixed blade and start the routine over again. If that doesn't work well good luck! hahaha The Manix 2 sure is a fine working knife, just not the fidget toy you hoped it to be.

    • @GrumpyGrunt
      @GrumpyGrunt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeroenvoss6231 🤣 Yes, Doctor. I do actually do something along that line with some knives (like the 'Manix 2'). I switch to my small folder, which inevitably has a different opening system. If there is work to be done, I usually take out my fixed blade. The only fidgeting I do with it is whittling on sticks (try sticks/feather sticks/etc.). If I walk around with a fixed blade out for 15 minutes and I am not in the kitchen, people are going to worry... 🤣

    I totally voided my warranties on both my Manix 2 Lightweights 🤣🤣🤣. Both are converted from rivets to screws. 1 has a Flytnium titanium ball cage lock which is more comfortable than the plastic and that one has a S30V blade I pulled from a G10 model. The other has a acid etched and stonewashed blade. Both of them are completely drop free actions. Absolutely love the Manix 2 LW... after modding them though. Sold my G10 version as I didn't like the weight and all the jimping. Great review though.

    • @GrumpyGrunt
      @GrumpyGrunt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I watched Justin/OCD4EDC convert one of the Orange/Black ones to do a blade swap, I think. It looked like enough of a pain for him, I didn't want to even try it. I break s#@t. I don't put it back together so well. 🦍 I dig that people love modding this knife so much and own so many models of it, though.
      Thanks for watching, Will. Stay well.

    So I have the manix bd1. It has translucent blue scales that are a very hard plastic. I have the para 3 spy 27 and the scales have a much nicer softer feel. I’m wondering how the scales feel on the manix spy 27. Is it like a hard plastic?

    • @GrumpyGrunt
      @GrumpyGrunt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Your Para3 is made from the same plastic as the Manix2 SPY27, which is Fiber Reinforced Nylon (FRN). The Fiber Reinforced CoPolymer (FRCP) in your Manix2 in BD1 might be a little bit sharper on the little grip nubs, but it is most likely the fact that the stock Manix2 scales have no relief machined or molded into the scales where your fingers land the way the Para3 does. The edges on a Para3 LW are more rolled and have points of relief molded into the FRN where the Manix2 does not.
      If you are thinking of getting the SPY27 Manix and you like your Para3, try getting a Sage 5 lightweight instead. It's like a compression lock Manix that is scaled down to the size of a Para3 and has relief molded into the scales. It also lands you in the same general price range ($141 for the Sage 5 lw).
      Good luck and have a good weekend!

      A friend of ours is putting together an offer for trade. If I don't hear from him soon, I'll let you know. I'm not selling stuff, brother. Just trading with friends who want something I own so I can make their day and more content. If I can trade for something I want too, cool. Because, I don't really know how to value knives. @@jn651 That's kind of it. Some of my nicest, most solid knives are just ones I don't carry anymore. I hate them sitting around, being used only for comparison knives. I just don't really know how to turn them into comparable knives or gear to make content. I am trading a few with other channels so they can experience some knives they otherwise might not get to.

    I don't know why, but swapping the ball lock out with the flytanium ti one actually doesn't hurt the finger as bad. That is obviously not an option on the lw version, but it does make a difference on the regular g10 version.

    • @GrumpyGrunt
      @GrumpyGrunt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought about it, but I really prefer the Sage 5 and compression lock models more anyway. So, I think I am going to let this one go and put that $ toward chasing a Shaman. If I do keep it or replace it in the future, the Flytanium ball lock will definitely happen. Thanks, Tim. Stay well, brother.

    I am a huge fan of the manix2. that Spy27 looks interesting and it's supposed to be S30V with some cobalt. The ball lock hurts your fingers? did you hang out with some navy dudes?😉I have to second Marcos was that a little "spydie" flex?

    • @GrumpyGrunt

      If I still owned both, it might be a bit of a flex. But, I feel bad owning the one I rarely get to carry anymore when that thing wants to work.
