Hey back in the late 80s this old man had this junkyard and gave me his racing heads off his old VW. He helped me build a pretty quick Bug
Love the old school wide rims and arch flares!
It's a miracle the engine lasted the whole day.
Wish tube was around when I raced my 1962 model beetle back in the late 80's 280hp was fun in something that weighed only 680kg
Man now that's a oldie but goodie. And the grey hair makes it better.

PRonTheRoad Looks like it! I actually almost mentioned Herbie, as I grew up in that era and saw it in the movie theatre. But didn't want to date myself. Glad someone else knew about him.

I HAD ONE WITH 1835 BIG BORE KIT FITTED TO A TWIN PORT 1600. IT WENT PRETTY WELL BUT WAS VERY HAIRY TO DRIVE AT ANY SORT OF HIGH SPEED .FUN CAR ALL THE SAME

It's a "super beetle" with the greater and heavier body. The older body is lighter (take a look at Herbie or the mexican beetles) and better for racing.
That is not a super beetle. Super beetles had a curved windshield. This one has a flat windshield.
Super beetles had far superior suspension and thus much better (and safer..) handling.
@@alex_k1410 You right i had one curved window twin carb 50 mm a piece forged 3/4 cam a big fit on bore that thing was nutz..

now that's a bug lol but I think he was short shifting it
The few times he lost was probably due to slow shifting. So he definitely has a shifting issue... I think he still has a standard shifter (or not fast enough) and may need a short shift kit, or do something about the transmission.
@@Lowonfuel short shifting means he was shifting to soon he should have let it rev higher
@@danhard8440 I know the word... and I did mean slow-shifting, that was the first thing I noticed. Many cars with standard transmissions had shift sticks with long throws that made fast shifting-gears nearly impossible. As for the engine revs, the engine idles normally, and it doesn't sound like he has a racing high revving cam installed. I know cams have changed a lot, and he may have one of the torque camshafts, but they are not designed to take the engine revs much higher than stock, they are designed to improve HP and Torque starting from lower RPMs and deliver the power during a wider power band but start losing power at higher RPMs.
@@Lowonfuel what your talking about is with the linkage not the transmission or short shifting
@@danhard8440 And you're talking about the engine acceleration without consideration for the shift linkage or transmission gear ratios, etc., etc. and It all goes together if the linkage is not right, and the shift stick is too long which was very usual those years, it takes longer to shift gears and I say this because the guy takes longer in-between/shifting gears than normal for a drag race.
You may have driven a performance-oriented car and noticed they have short shift sticks, with short throws, those make shifting faster and smoother (that's what the short shift kit I was talking about does). Older cars did not have that, almost all had tall shift sticks with long throws.
And if you pay close attention, he's shifting at about the same moment the competitors do. And sometimes he takes even longer than necessary (for the engine power)... that's when the higher gear comes on and the tires grab the road, making it evident the speed was higher than necessary for the next gear. It's as bad to shift too late, as it is to shift too soon.

Looks to be a 1973 Super Beetle
the front windshield is flat, making it 71-72. in '73 the windshield was curved and projected forward.
European spec Super Beetle. Has modifications. Likely said was a 1973 SB because of tail lights. Agree 71-72 SB.
What engine does it have?? Sounds like an air cooled beetle...not a subaru I dont think....
