Honestly guys...just slap some paint on 10 fun fantasy skirmish models and let's play Frostgrave! But here's the challenge....paint models other than GW models. Two reasons for this: 1.) Non-GW models will be like looking at the the Fantasy world through a different lens and might spur some really interesting new ideas for building a warband and for painting things differently. 2.) Your pool of suitable models to pick from will be infinitely larger and again, this might open up some new ideas about how they could be painted. BONUS CHALLENGE: Build a single piece of really cool winter scenery for the table that is unique and specific to your warband. Bring it along when we play and add it to the table! Let's do this! As someone with ''200'' hobbies, i dont fight painters block, i just let it happend and do sometthing else for a week/month. And when ever these pods comes out i always paint while listening to them so you fight the block for me hah.
Same, I’ll just not do it if I don’t want to. Eventually I’ll end up behind my desk again when it tickles my fancy. I also find you just pick up where you left off skill wise, sometimes I’ve even improved without actually having done anything.

Couldn't go to ReaperCon last year because of a family wedding, but I do try to go every year. It's a great experience -- very friendly and excellent classes. (Probably more excellent this year, since I'm not teaching. 8-) ) We're driving down this year again and looking forward to seeing folks we don't see often.
Part of me really wishes miniatures did not come with painted box art. I think there's a psychological thing that happens when you see a wonderfully painted model on the box and somehow think that's what's in there, only to then be hit by the daunting task of trying to paint just like the box art. Imagine going to the art store to buy a canvas, the canvas is wrapped in an image of something from Monet, O'Keefe or Vermeer, then you unwrap the canvas and you're now staring at a blank and all you can think of is that amazing image you just saw? Sure, it's nice if you're the type of person that wants that kind of high level inspiration, but, when it comes to minis, I'd much rather just have a photo of the assembled model - free of paint - with just some graphical key art behind it. Now, I know that when it comes to WH and other games, there are reasons for following specific paint schemes like armies, rules and lore, but if you're already into it for those very reasons then you already know what template you'll be following. It's one of the things I really like about the D&D Nolzur minis and even the Frameworks ones. You just get the model and no real specific painting requirements even though the characters do have rules and lore to follow.
A trick with contrast is to try the slap chop method. I like to do a zenithal. Shade the model ahead of time. Then dry brush white before I apply contrast. You can get different effects by using different dark primers and shades. For instance I’m doing my gellerpox with dark camp green zenithalled with wrath bone then a green shade and white dry brush. Then ill apply contrasts. I still do TMM. The end result is it helps hide mistakes.
GenCon22 was absolutely bonkers for a first-timer. The trade show hall took me like 2 and a half days to walk through on its own, and the mini wargaming hall was at least half that size. That doesn't take into account all the booths with skirmish-sized games being demoed. I was there Thurs>Sun and I saw maybe 30% of what was there. I never even made it over to the Stadium!
GW did have digital only rules you had to pay for. But they haven't don so since about the start of 8th 40K when they stopped selling ebooks. For a while the Inquisition codex was only available in ebook.
Fan living in Osaka Japan here. The Japanese Golden Demon did exist but it doesn't happen anymore for some reason and runs under a different name called "Dawn Crown". Just like Golden Demon, it is a GW exclusive miniature painting contest... and just like anywhere else, competition is fierce and the painters here are on a whole different level. I was just in Vegas a month ago. Buffets are super expensive now and most are sub par but if you're willing to cough up the coin for it, go to the buffet in Caesar's Palace. It was amazing.
Scott, on the topic of your random one off collection, what if you put together two or three and made a diorama. That way you can use all those random models and still make content with them
I wonder if either of you have tried Star Wars Legion - its relatively small model count to get started, Rebels, Shadow Collective/Scum, and to a lesser degree Clones have a lot of freedom in paint scheme. There is a bit of variety in units, but not an overwhelming amount.

Didn't see this in the comments yet, but some, not sure what percentage, of Underworlds units can be used in Warcry, and they do have different stats from their "vanilla" version. The stats are usually slightly better from what I've seen.

Soccer is already the "ping pong"ed name of football. You socc the ball back and forth. Also Scott is correct, ping pong was named for the sound the game makes. It was the original trade name for the game when originally sold, and renamed table tennis when it became more of a sport than a parlour/pub game.
Soccer is actually the original name Americans kept referring to it as soccer, but the British decided to start calling it football look it up if you don't believe me. And the ping pong version of soccer is foosball.

Since you're going to Vegas you gotta check out Prince Restaurant on Flamingo Road- it's Serbian food and I'm not sure they know what vegetables are. Balkans meat sweats are on a whole 'nother new level. Although I'd recommend avoiding the Rakia (fruit brandies) unless you want to go blind. Only real downside is that the service is more of an Eastern/Southern European vibe so don't expect Johnny on the spot levels of American style service. Also, expect several regulars in track suits XD

I think one thing to consider as far as the discussion on a company sponsored competition with a free entry of any model is to consider is bias. People that win with models that are from the companies specific line might have their wins diminished by people saying they judged more favorably because it was their specific sculpt. On the flip side if you win with a sculpt outside of the companies range you might have people say its specifically because the company didn't want to seem biased and therefore judged their own line less favorably. Its a double edged sword.
For bigger projects that will just take a lot of time, you should work on them over time on your streams. Would show people you painting something to your best ability over time with no editing required, you get to do it, and the other people you paint with can be working on smaller projects that people will see completed faster. Then you would also have a scheduled time you work on it to keep you working on it.
To overcome any kind of "creative block".. do what I do for drumming. Entirely throw away all rhythms,grooves, timing structure, etc.. throw it all away. Just do something whacky while still analyzing what you're doing. For painting, do color randomizer, play with a new texture paint mix, try silly things.
I am currently struggling my way through Aristeia because of the bad quality. I love the game. If you miss Guildball this might do the trick but also is easier to convince people to play since there's less gotchas and abilities to learn and memorize you can play it less frequently and still have a good time. However the core set was in poor PVC (not even ASOIAF quality) and expansions are in PVC (better quality) or metal, but the metal versions required you to also buy the PVC versions to get their cards and tokens. I think Aristeia is an exception game that is well liked by boardgamers but was ignored by miniature gamers due to these reasons.

I expect a lot of the issue with companies running an open-manufacturer mini-painting competition is that it becomes an issue with copyright and trademark. If CreatureCaster runs an open painting competition for any model and the winner is a GW model: how much can they show the winner in their photos? Or use the models as marketing? Does it become an issue with GW? Does GW have the right to request a takedown of that imagery? Does this then become an issue of only companies who were pre-contacted and pre-approved models? Then it's no longer open.
So i will say the biggest reason that have not started my age of sigmar army is because i have an idea of an origonal paint scheme and im intimidated with not being able to do it justice. As well as not knowing how to execute the paint job to match whats in my head
