I think anyone who just looks at the price of the caravan is going to have a big shock! Storage, tow car, fuel extortionate pitches, insurance etc etc makes it a very expensive option especially if you take depreciation into account.
It's not cheap, but if you use it enough it can work out very cheap, and it's still better than hotels or going abroad. IF and a big if, you get plenty of use. 👍
To be honest, fuel prices are probably around 2019 prices as well (average of about £1.35 a litre), storage costs can be anything from £300 a year upwards, my insurance is cheaper now than it was in 2019, pitch prices won't come down as there are still many more caravanners and motorhomes that there has ever been, it isn't a cheap way of holidaying and like everything, people need to go into it with their eyes open
It's perfectly cheap if you go to rally meets, CLs/CSs, Temporary Holiday Sites etc. £12 or so per unit per night at the Camping Club DA meets or THS meets I attend. How is that not affordable? And there are meets all over the country, inevitably ones near to you or where you'd like to visit. And for most of the year (March to end October with a smaller number of places open throughout the year or deeper towards Winter). So there is no need to go to expensive camp sites unless you want to spend that money.
Totally agree with you Paul. If dealers put up prices again, we will see more dealers going out of business. People will only pay what they can afford.
You are right and what you said is in turn is dictated by the economy and under Starmer, it is the gloomiest that I have known it since the 70's. Strangely Labour ran the country then as well ?
@@FredFox-m9v You are totally incorrect, WHO have been in government for the past fourteen years. 'NOT THE TORY'S THEN' Please lay the state of the economy inherited, on the ones WHO created it PLEASE. And if you look back to the Blair years this was when most working people were the most affluent.
A van that was 6 years old in 2019 is now just below that price at nearly twice the age - not exactly bottomed out but certainly moving in a realistic direction. Ultimately, an item is worth what somebody is prepared to pay for it and with non essential items this price is often emotion derived rather than by logic hence the rocket of pricing following COVID.
well we had tears two weeks ago, sold our van to the dealer we bought from. After 11 years going on family holidays the prices that sites now charge means...we are no longer caravanin. Very sad but as others have said lack of storage , high storage prices, insurance and fuel. Funny in Britain we charge for everything yet abroard they still make a profit at 20 euros a night.....gread took over from common sense when covid arrived. So many sites are still over charging all this time later. Great video as always.
I remember buying when it was roughly a grand per year ie 2010 -10 k. 2016 -16k for second hand caravans at a dealers bit cheaper private! You offer great value for money! Great to see & hear
What you don't say is that you buy in at a lower because people are told that the market is dead, but you don't sell at a lower price. The margin would be greater because of the lower price you buy at.
It’s worth what someone will pay for it which is determined by their wages, pension, house price value, finance costs, etc. The conditions are bad for people to be buying caravans or motorhomes. The Labour government are making it even worse with their assault on pensioners, adding extra NI which raises prices and is leading to to job losses and many additional taxes
Good effort Mark. Prices are still too high, caravans are a luxury that the majority of people cannot afford. The National Caravan Guide prices are meaningless unless people are prepared to pay them. Suppliers increased prices during covid when customers were prepared to pay them. 2025 models are out now and supply is outstripping demand.
Thanks Keith, new production has been cut so hopefully this will calm the new market, but if buyers feel prices are too high, they will come down, BUT we also have people who want to part exchange, and they need to get fair prices for the current caravan, so if they feel prices are too low for their current caravan then the market doesn't move. It's got to settle at some point, and I think we are very close 👍
Hi Mark. I can see your reasoning behind caravan prices particularly in the new van sector. As Covid arrived, many holiday makers were anxious and put off going abroad because of pandemic. Caravan manufacturers saw an opportunity to increase retail prices significantly as more people stayed in UK. We look at this from two angles. You for sales and margin and, me the consumer for best price deals etc. However, lots of comments here say, (and I aggree), people will only pay what they can afford. I am looking closely at the used market over these coming months, as i will be in the market to purchace a used van. Hoping for prices to be lower than of late.
Yes very true, the buyer has to feel price is correct, the more that they feel that, the more people buy and the market settles. The biggest issue is part exchange, so people who already have vans, they also need to feel a fair price is given for what they have, so if prices go too low it works for some but not all, so we need a balance where the whole market is able to move forward. I don't think we are far away. 👍
Regarding part exchange, if you don't have a van to trade, i feel as a cash buyer, im loosing out. Just my opinion on lots of visits to used caravan centres. 👍
Dealers and price guides can put prices at whatever level they like, but what determines the price is what someone is willing to pay. Price them too high and the vans will be ornaments.
With my total respect, there is something I really don’t understand… as a business owner, you calculate the overall cost, and then add a margin that will keep your business going at a financially healthy level. So why would you change your margin based on some sort of guide…?? And of course the Cost needs to be all inclusive, and consist of a number of elements: Cost of purchasing the caravan, Storage space, Average turn-around time, Costs of loss of interest, Staff cost, Etcetera, etcetera, And then you add a margin on top of that, and that becomes your selling price. Call me simple, or maybe an old dinosaur if you wish, but I just don’t understand how and why would that change just because of some sort of guide……??? Or let me put it differently… if the guide tells you to lower your prices, you could be running your business at a loss, why would you do that……?? I understand that this could be business-confidential, so I wouldn’t expect an answer or even a reply, but maybe this gives you some food for thought.
It's always going to be the market that sets the price, same with everything, but we are still an industry that works from the guide on trade and retail. Each dealer will then work to suit them. But with demand and prices starting to settle, combined with the new guide that is giving a higher retail value. This will feed through potentially. As you say every business will work to their model, but because the trade does "live by the guide prices" it will move prices, it may take 6 months. With all business costs about to increase the margin has to increase so it either comes off the trade value or goes onto the retail value. It now depends on if demand can sustain an increase if not then the trade value will come down. I feel that the prices have come to a sensible level so makes sense if demand continues to pick up, and with retail Guide values increasing, it's a chance that this is how it will go. 👍
I drove through a static caravan site yesterday and was shocked (and I mean shocked) at scrap statics with no double glazing up for sale for £27000, there's still more misery to come in the leisure industry
Supply & Demand. Personally, there is a % increase in UK growth. So, I’d be more interested in what’s happening outside the caravan place. Prices will not increase until people have more money in their pockets.
Thanks for your comments 👍 yes if people aren't buying prices come down, but I feel that a lot of people are sat waiting to buy, but everyone wants to catch the bottom and not over pay. I feel we have found a sensible price level, where prices won't free fall next year. They will come down it's normal, but at a normal level and not huge drops, I think as people see the market levels out, those buyers will come through. We have already started to see this. But I don't have a crystal ball so could be completely wrong 😂😂 👍
site pricing is sky high , can almost get a hotel room for same price or cheaper depending were you go , i think the bubble has burst , like motor bikes prices will or should be cheaper over winter as dealers will want shot of stock
Suspect what is happening is the second hand market is going to pick up as manufacturers don’t drop and in most cases continue to increase prices ridiculously on new vans.
Great update on the marketplace mark,I am a small independent business & have had the glass,s guide do you have a link or a website for the new national caravan price guide as I have googled it but unable to find it thanks Richard
So trade values will stay about the same, but if retail goes up, it gives more chance to get a higher trade in value. I have said it's pointless prices keep going down if people aren't able to part exchange due to low prices, so we need a balance in the market now. It's the only way it can really move forward.
Hey - Can you do a couple of videos of any budget caravans with two fixed children beds? or a family caravan for two adults two toddlers! :) I am hoping to looking to buy one in the next 6 months.
I think it's more that prices have leveled and we won't see big drops like this year. If we see a big demand next year then prices may creep up slightly, not much, but we won't see big drops. Just my thoughts 👍
What's hello fresh got to do with caravanning? Have you lost the plot Mark? Prices of second hand vans are subject to what the customer wants to pay for them. The industry is on its knees and no matter how you or other dealers try to maintain it's not and now is the right time to buy, people are not fools. The best time for buying cars/ caravans has always been during the winter period, nothing has changed on that front.
People are still buying at the moment, but as we come into December it will go very quiet. As mentioned, I think retail prices may sneak up very slightly over the next 6 months so if it's not costing you anything to keep the caravan, I would look to advertise in January. We normally see a good increase in sales in January. 👍
Beloved 520/4 2005 vip from new our caravan hobby coming to end ill health brilliant van will see we pd a lot those days but its herm worth it ikd days coachman

Caravan prices will be dictated by availability and the amount of disposable income cutomers have available. Nothing else.
This is true👍
Totally agree with you Paul. If dealers put up prices again, we will see more dealers going out of business. People will only pay what they can afford.
And if you turnover stock quickly you'll keep costs lower ?
You are right and what you said is in turn is dictated by the economy and under Starmer, it is the gloomiest that I have known it since the 70's. Strangely Labour ran the country then as well ?

I think a lot like me have money to go but think the wait until prices become realistic is worth the wait.
Yes I think there is a big number of people waiting for prices to level, I don't think we are far off from normal levels now. I might be wrong 🙈
You cant convince me that you are selling too cheap. Good try though. 😂
Lol. I think they are about right, but I don't think we will now see prices crashing as before. 👍
Hi would you be better to have one sales site less over heads . You don’t look to have a lot of of stock
It’s worth what someone will pay for it which is determined by their wages, pension, house price value, finance costs, etc. The conditions are bad for people to be buying caravans or motorhomes. Mark there is less demand for caravans now than in 2019 don't you think? So if less demand for a producr the cheaper the product is?
Yes but before Covid new vans were £25/30k for a new van now they are up to £50k.
Yes new has gone up drastically, which drags the used up. 👍
So that means part exchange prices should be really good.#not 😏@@thecaravanplace

Wouldn't touch hello fresh again after what I've been reading on the socials. Plus all the jobs being lost at a one of their factories.

Someone has a crystal ball. Mystic Mark salesman extraordinaire 😂😂😂😂
Just my take on it, could be wrong, I normally am 😂😂😂
@thecaravanplace .. Everything depends on how the chancellor counts her paper clips Mark .. 🤣🤣
Always full of brilliant information... but just get to the point please, to much meandering, I keep having to fast forward. Sorry.

Thanks 👍
Yep
So he compared the same caravan with the price it was in 2019 but didn’t mention that it was now five years older, or am I missing something?
Great information thank you so much!!!
Thanks 👍
Suspect what is happening is the second hand market is going to pick up as manufacturers don’t drop and in most cases continue to increase prices ridiculously on new vans.
Potentially, new production has been cut so no massive over supply. So with used prices now back to below 2019 prices, we are about right hopefully. 👍

Making the margins up by Hello Fresh sponsorship. I wont be watching anymore if this advertising continues.
Goodbye no need for a leaving event 😜
Am up for a leaving do what time and place 🥳
So will part ex go up the same?
So trade values will stay about the same, but if retail goes up, it gives more chance to get a higher trade in value. It’s cheaper to go in hotel and not dragging a dead weight around storage camp sites ect
If costs go up, then margin is Decreased ?
Spot on, so the retail margin has to increase, otherwise we will have another 12 months of dealers going bust.
Prices will continue to drop the uk is in recession and site fees are stupidly expensive so leisure vehicles are going to suffer further
This is new prices ?
Get to the point
Supposedly, good things come to those who wait 🙈
Can I get some of what you are on !!!!
I'm dizzy now!
The predicted price is a good idea
I’m gong to sell my coachman 580/5, is it best to sell it now or wait untill March next year

No you have moved to a left wing labour government tax the hell out of every body they will go lower 👍
You seem to have forgotten that under the tories tax had been the highest for 70 years..
What a load of waffle
