Thanks for this instructional and informative video. However, as just a suggestion you may want to edit it by adding one more key piece of information: the type of tire that you used appeared to be a bias ply tire and not the much more common steel belted radial. It is much easier to make sandals from bpt's than it is from sbr's because the binding is made of nylon and not steel. Also, I don't know about in the U. K. but in the U. S. bias ply tires are becoming increasingly hard to find unless you buy them new because the market has been largely taken over by the sbr's. One exception to this is trailer tires. Some of them are still bpt's. Again, thanks for the video.
I agree. I wish I could make edits after the upload. This has been the most common question. Just thought people would have known that cutting a radial belt tyre would be impossible and didn't anticipate that they would be difficult to find in other parts of the world. This was a trailer tyre to be precise. Thank you for the contribution of knowledge! It's great to get such helpful advice in the comments section!!!
great job. funny how many think this is a new idea and I've been wearing these for over 50yrs. Just keep changing the leather straps when they wear out. hint: cut a tommie (bamboo) mat to clue on for comfort and reduce ft slippage when wet. "keep the faith people, and keep on keeping on"
Has potential, but the straps are not designed to last. A little effort in design would pay huge benefits. I recommend looking at some of the indig designs.

I would rather wear a pair of these than leather. Here is a good tip, if ya like....check with local scuba shops (they get rid of torn up rental wetsuits , most times just give away or throw out. Trace out some neoprene over these flip flops, get you some BARGE glue (Hobby Lobby has it) glue a layer of neoprene. This way, when it gets wet, or your feet get sweaty, you don't slip and slide all over the place. Or you can go to your local fabric store, and buy some neoprene...of course this would defeat the repurpose goal. Hope you try this.
Are they durable? The flip flops I buy over in Thailand only last about 6 months, would there be a way to make a pair that lasts a lifetime , or a decade?
They're not as uncomfortable as I thought they were going to be, but they're not that comfortable for long periods of time... mainly because they are so heavy. I just use them for short trips outside, around the house.
These straps were pilfered from an old pair of worn out flip flops. If you did make your own and tied a knot, you'd need to make a cavity under the sole to allow the knot to sit in it so that you wouldn't be walking on the lumps made by the knot.
Mate! Since the hipters use old black garden boots as their ice bucket, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't pay good money for this out of this world thongs. Cha ching!!
The VC came up with this Idea in the "American War". They would make the tread go in different directions to each other so if the G.I were to find an uncovered track they would be confused about about which direction they were walking.
With great difficulty. I wouldn't try it tbh. You can find tyres without steel radial belts fairly easy... In fact, you're local tyre shop should have a used up one every now and then and would be happy to give one away. They're usually used in light trailers, like what's used on a small boat trailer.

They sure are, albeit heavy. They'll never wear through. The straps might need to be changed every now and then though.
Love it! Have these held up for you? Are they comfortable?
They're not as uncomfortable as I thought they were going to be, but they're not that comfortable for long periods of time... mainly because they are so heavy. I just use them for short trips outside, around the house.
How do u make thoes straps? And If u knot them on the bottom of the shoes how does that work????

Basically, your use a nylon structured tire instead of a steel belted version?
Yeah, it's definitely not a steel band tyre; it's an old tyre from a trailer.

They get fantastic mileage too :)

You omitted the part showing how the strap ends were fashioned so as not to pull out of the holes you made in the soles.
They were actually from an old pair of flip flops.
thanks,i tried but its a painful effort to cut the tyre because of the bending wires in it.
Small tyres usually don't have the radial wires... That's what I used.
Great video! I was wondering what kind of drill bit you used for making the larger holes? Was it Forstner? wood or metal head? Thanks!
Yep... Wood.

How do I know the wheel that has no wire through the numbers and letters written on it
I'm thinking if you used a car tire the steel belts would have been a problem.
Trailer tyre. No radial belts :)
Yes, the steel belts are difficult to cut. I thied using a hacksaw to do it once and it was a pain in the ankles.

The flip-flops I were actually broken, so I put the straps from the old ones to good use.
I tried that, but the curve of the tire makes it difficult to glue on. I ended up using rivets.
