- Thank You Dave Canterbury for the video last night on this knife build. I watched it 3 times before transforming my putty knife into an extremely sharp, good batoning, and great scraping knife. Even though the edge retention is very poor, overall, it’s an incredible emergency knife. Please find the LINK to David Canterbury’s video below. Also, do follow my LINKS below Like And SUBSCRIBE. Good Video buddy
Looking at old cutlery makers videos, I think they skip heat treatment and just hammered the knives in shape and hardness. So if the metal is too soft, hammer it like a scythe
Sometimes we see channels coming out with similar subject matter all near the same time, and each acts as if they originated it. It is the mark of character when a man gives credit to the channel he got the idea from.
I keep a thin blade putty knife in the kitchen. I rounded the corners off a wee bit so that won't dig in. I scrape cast iron cookwear with it. Use it to separate frozen bread slices. Very useful.
I'm with you on that. Usually they take someone else's idea or topic, put a little twist on it, and then call it their own. How fragile is your ego if you can't even say, "I got a great idea or technique from X Channel. Here's my version or demonstration of it."
Fun little project, something you can throw in the tackle box and have in an emergency
Great video and very noble to give Dave the shout out, IMHO. People should know that a coarse grinding stone will be less likely to burn the temper out of your blade than a fine stone. I had it reversed in my own head for a long time and that's why I mention it here. Do all the shaping that you can with a coarse wheel and then maybe move to a fine file for the finish work before the actual "sharpening" phase on a wet stone.
Great point!
Mein erstes Messer für Bushcraft war auch ein Eigenbau aus Geldmangel.
Damals; vor gut 40 Jahren, hab ich einen alten Stechbeitel umgesrbeitet. Das Ding hab ich heute noch im Einsatz.
I know it’s dear you. Ty!
I used to make these for my kids and all their friends, I recon I’ll start making the for the grandkids now. ❤
I don't mind the soft metal, easy to sharpen, easy to dull.
Get lots of practice that way
Well Dang David........An easy project that even I can do and probably will by Sunday.
I think a stainless putty knife is going to be better for me next time.
It even sounds sharp!
I make camping knives out of old carbon kitchen knives and patina them with oranges, but never thought of a putty knife! Until now! Thanks
Thanks friend!
Now I need to investigate the orange thing.
I’ve done the same, old hickory by Ontario knife company. Sad they just closed theirs doors. I’ve bought their factory second butcher knives for like $6, and made some nice camp knives with them. I think replacing the wooden handles makes it nicer in the hand too. All the mountain men back in the frontier days, were most likely using big butcher knives as their edc, as opposed to the Bowie knife we assume they had.
Great job. I use a well used flap disc for grinding the edge, just be very carefull of the direction as the flaps will catch in the knife edge
Very well done yet again.
I appreciate that
Yeah i saw him make that "hobo knife" and thought well the flea markets will be getting a premium for those "bushcraft putty knives", they will be hard to find soon
I made one without grinding 10 years ago. I made some videos with it. There was such little interest in the 4 or 5 videos that I deleted them.
Sounds like a good rainy day project. Personally, I do not trust my angle grinder enough to try it on something like making a knife blade. I’ll have to go with my belt sander to get the putty knife to the shape that works best for me. Your finished project turned out very nicely. Thanks for sharing.
I agree, the belt sander is ideal. But as a former pipe fitter, I’ve had many years of experience with an angle grinder. I was pretty confident that I could handle it. Glad you liked the outcome!
Hi David! Flea markets are fun and can yield rewarding results! Love this exanple!
I love'm. Haven't been in a while.
Forgot about this channel. Good to see new vids.
David, I really like this idea for making an emergency bushcraft knife, for light work. Except for the cutting edge getting dull quickly it sharpens right up with that diamond sharpener. It works and I'll bet it will still get a spark off that flint just watch that sharp side.
Thanks Erol!
Great idea!
Awesome 👍
Thanks 🤗
You can find these at garage sales but jardto find new with wooden handles... most are plastic and will get soft in the grindi g process and the blade will get loose... saw this same idea this morning another channel
Yes that was Dave Canterbury's video. I gave him credit in the description and in the video.
Pure utility. Excellent!
Great to hear!
Good job David.
I have a Red Devil I shortened to 1 1/4 inches and sharpened on one side. It's an excellent gasket remover.
Shortened to be stiff enough for the job. Cool!
Thankyou for a good job
Excellent! It’ll need frequent sharpening but obviously it takes an edge. Impressed!
That's what I thought. Wait till you see the bow drill video I made the next day.
I enjoyed the transformation and video.
That is really cool !
Never ever thought of doing this ! Thanks David another well done video !
It was fun. Thank you!
Hi David! Excellent demonstration!
Hey, thanks!
Thx
👍🏼hey David I turned my great grandpas putty knife into a knife. Very slicey. The handle still has all of his stuff on it. Paint, putty and whatever else.
Goodjob!
I too like to leave the dents, scratches, and wear and tear. They add character and tell a story of their own.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl 👍🏼
Thanks for sharing that great video Mr west 👍👌🔥
I love repurposing them ! They make good throwing knives
I’ve done this a fun wee project
Nice project. If you take the lint from your dryer you can use that as tinder to start the fire to burn the larger pieces
👍👍👍 .. nice 😊.
The Man knows! 👍. Unroll the electrical cord extension reel completely to eliminate the danger of an 'Induced Magnetic Field' and possible subsequent electric cable overheating under Load 😊.
A nice little Project. I suppose that, in the absence of the appropriate electrical grinding tools, if one has enough spare time / idle hands, a hack saw and files/s would suffice. Treat as an 'ongoing project' (akin to 'whittling') to counter 'boredom' aka 'Mull Time' 😏.
Thanks for sharing David, take care ..
Thanks Thomas.
AC current alternates polarity so it cannot induce a magnetic current, therefore no need to unroll unless you just enjoy it. If it was DC, such as a welding lead, then that would be true.
@@justme7478 I don't think so.
Quote: "The magnetic field produced by an alternating current is not canceled out because the changing magnetic field induces an EMF that sustains the magnetic field. This phenomenon is fundamental to the operation of devices like transformers and motors that rely on electromagnetic induction to function properly."
Go research it. If not so, at the very least, look up photos of melted cable on extension reels .. plenty out there.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl 👍
Now that's pretty cool David. You made a 50 cent knife do what a hundred dollar one would
True... or a big part of what a $100 knife can do.
Dude, awesome video. Luv it!
G'day mate. You never cease to amaze us with your project. Cheers from Australia.
Love! this stuff! Cheers!
G'day from "down under" David, just goes to show what can be done with very little and one of the inherent beauties is you can choose any blade shape. I did do one of these back in the day ...... 30 years ago ; ). And as an electrical apprentice we did one as a wire stripping knife out of a power hacksaw blade, though we did have to blow a hole for the second rivet with an arc welding rod. I also did do several "file" knives too, though in fairness I had access to an industrial surface grinder and oven back then. I do now have a modest "store bought" cutting tool collection, though I did buy a tramo machete specifically for modification in much the same way, ....... just on a larger scale ; ) and I've also converted an ol' felling axe head into a Hudson Bay job with custom handle, ....just because ; )
Btw; we all get our inspiration from somewhere and I respect that you gave Dave C the acknowledgement in this instance, ..... mind you, he probably got that from somewhere else too ; )
Anyway, great work mate !!!. Cheers Duke.
Pipe Insulators often have similar knives. TY!
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl No worries David, btw have you seen a carpet layers knife, kinda like a hook ?
Sure if you do it everyday you want what they use, steel-wise, i.e. very wearing.
However, if you want to have crack at a room or two, I reckon its just a putty knife away ; )
Yes, a hawkbill knife.
Yep.....I have made two of these. I tried it with a stainless steel putty knife and it didn't sharpen as well as the carbon steel one. Either way wheres there a will....there is a way. I will say the carbon steel one I made was dangerously sharp. Just leaving it outside on my man cave table it lost it's razor edge overnight just due to the rust forming. Kool knife though David. In a pinch it could save your life. Thank God for Mora's though. I thank God each time I use my mora's....he made them possible!
You're right, if you look too hard at that edge, even... it dulls.
I never saw a stainless putty knife.
a.co/d/3BkwCiD
It’s a keeper if it clicks into its sheath like it did at the end! It’s as if there was a magnet stuffed in the bottom.
LOL! I couldn't believe the sheath worked so well.
when using a grinder on knife steel...use a FLAP DISC, never a hard grinding disc.
The flap disk will not heat up the metal as much and they cost about the same.
Also, if it matters, the flaps last a bit longer for same work.
You're right, but for me, a $0.50 putty knife from the flea market, doesn’t warrant the extra expense. Quenching manages the heat to prevent overheating. I was making do with the tools that I already had. Appreciate your input!”
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl also....just a fwiw...NORTON is about as good as you can get, and if you buy them from a Welding Supply store, they should sell for a little bit LESS than DeWalt from Home Depot....go figure.
I used to buy discs by the case, we would tear through about 20 in a day with 4 grinders on W-flange beams and pipe risers.
Very cool project!!! Budget friendly
Yes! Thank you!
exactly !
That method is great “ I have an old Draw Blade a Old Timer made me back at the steel mill in the 80s it was made from a band saw blade and the machine itself was from a World War 2 machine Shop.
Cool, right there!
Just a small suggestion. With either a grinder or a belt sander, keep a container of cold water on the bench and dip the blade in it every few seconds it will help it keep from overheating and taking the temper out of the steel.
Nice work
Thank you! Cheers!
Cool!…
Sir this is one of the most beautiful knives I have ever seen. And believe me I have seen so many. 🔪
Wow, thank you!
Been wanting to do this. Thats a beautiful knife
See a couple of videos later where I make a bow drill set with it.
My shop just might get a new (old) beater knife this week, but I got to save one for what it is. A Canadian belt knife design might be fun too. As well, I like seeing the Corona Razortooth love in this video.
Thanks friend!
Obrigado por compartilhar! Farei uma faca dessa! 😉🗡👏👏👏
I saw Dave’s video too and will be looking for putty knives the next time I go to a flea market or garage sale to make one.
Fun project and useful skill to know for an emergency.
great
Thanks for the alternative to instead of a belt grinder. Use the handle grinder. Sure that’ll work just as well and thanks for all the details.
Slow removal of material and frequent quenching. Thank you!
Interesting video David, thanks for sharing YAH bless brother !
My pleasure
Somebody I can't remember which youtuber turn to five in one scraper into a survival knife who is full Tang and you can put on with it and everything
I think I saw it. The lack of edge retention is a problem in normal day life. For an emergency knife, miniscule.
That is one slick idea 👍👍🇺🇲
I didn't invent it, but surely improved it.
The slow motion catching the sparks is cool. Do you think an old Sawzall blade could be made into a decent knife? Those are common at garage sales
IDK seems a little hard.
FYI: Lowe's sells the diamond combination sharpener for about $20.
My Lowe's and Tractor Supply and Home Depot are out all the time. LOL!
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl Sounds Like my luck. LOL
Flap disk on the angle grinder would put bevels on that with no issues as long as you took it carefully.
Yes.
It's soft steel but it's also tough as hell and you can probably sharpen it on a rock if you had to.
Agreed.
I would have thought the char cloth would go behind the flint to catch sparks.
Hitting the sharp edge of the Chert causes the sparks to jump upwards. See my flint and steel playlist.
The tricky spot for me will be sharpening it
You can get a lot of practice with this soft metal
Fery good
David I ment to ask you the other day....whatever happened to your bright green mora? I noticed I haven't seen it in awhile. Really liked that color but never got the opportunity to get one. I have several of the olive green ones which are great but I really liked your green one. Mora doesn't offer it anymore as far as I can tell. I have so many moras right now, they will last me a lifetime. Just made a order the other day for Christmas presents for my nephews. I guess I am addicted to Mora's. No matter how many I have I always want more!
Indeed, I’ve retired the bright green Mora for now. It’s resting in the drawer.
Good...I was afraid you might have dropped it in the fire or something. To me, the older and scratched up a mora gets.....the better it works! I have one that is about 11 years old and I have really abused it but you get near the edge and it will lay you wide open. I have sharpened it so much over the years, the blade is about 1/8 shorter then when it was brand new. .. but it still performs perfectly.
Try using old wood chisels too
Great video! David, with the re-shaping of the Putty Knife blade, will the spine still create a spark against the flint? Thanks.
I think so. I'll probably try some day.
Congratulations Mr. West for your video, I really liked the making of your knife, but I would like to know how the sheath of your knife was made, thank you very much for posting your work.
I’m using a Mora Companion sheath. It fits the knife perfectly.
David West giving MacGyver a run for his money, of course i bet on David West
And no duct tape on this one.
David, I don't look a bit like your momma, but I'd recommend wearing at least a pair of readers when you're striking flint. It'll probably never get you, but my second try, I'd be in the ER. I know my luck.
Good video. I like repurposing and adapting things.
The oddest thing is, just today I was using a putty knife to spread plastic wood in a ding and thought, "I wonder if this thing is heat treated enough to make a blade?"
What's the chances of that? It's true.
PS - I prefer the Lansky style sharpeners with the angle guide. I can do a better than fair job freehand, but I'm an edge snob.
That sounds like my luck. LOL
Anybody else get the urge to throw there putty knives like a yhrowing knife?
A good putty knife these days if you don’t find one for .50 at a garage sale is about the same as a Mora.
I hear ya.
zamzam water
Zamzam water is rich in minerals. The health properties of Zamzam water (taste, odour and smell) are stable and not changed with time. Four essential metal ions are present enormously in Zamzam water. Those include sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium.
У меня в зоне такой был из шпателя , хлебушек порезать норм
Я подумал о том, чтобы попробовать другие принадлежности, такие как нож для масла, разбрасыватель глазури и другие садовые принадлежности.
I wanted to do this when i saw daves video but suddenly i cant find any of my old putty knives. I swear I was tripping over them last week
You’ll find them after you buy a new one.
If I ever go to prison and the warden makes me spackle, I’ll remember this video. If not, I’ll just buy a knife.
This putty knife project is not just about making a tool, it’s about demonstrating what’s possible with a bit of creativity and skill, especially in emergency situations. It’s about fostering self-reliance and preparedness, showing that with some ingenuity, we can turn everyday items into useful tools.
No belt sander, only a grinder? Try using flap disks. ;-)
That would work.
That’s cool and all, but what if I have a knife and need to putty something. Is putty still a thing?
Plumber’s putty, window glazing, scraping tasks, filling holes with filler, scrape away gasket material… save 50 cents and turn the knife back into a putty knife?
Now about the sheath?
I like that repurposed Mora Sheath.
But you can get an actual knife for 50c from the flea market.
I can’t get excited about the Mora. Obviously my loss.
My putty knife is too flimsy. Get a Mora. They’re awesome and cheap.
This project is making an emergency knife.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl Well I think it was an awesome knife. I suppose as long as it is for slicing, it should be great.

One could. Yet would not have the make it yourself satisfaction factor.
Wait, razor sharp is soft metal? That doesn't sound right. Straight razors & filet knives are usually MUCH harder than Bushcraft and camp knives.
When it only takes a few passes on the stone to razor sharpen it and only a few cuts to dull it, it's soft metal.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl That makes sense, thank you.
Next time: How to make a putty knife out of a knife.
Right?
David West showing us how to build a prison shank - Awesome! Trump may need one if the God haters try to throw him in jail. TRUMP 2024!
They say the constant lawsuits don't affect him, but lately he looks numb, drawn out, spent. How could it not affect him after so many years of torture!
Some will argue but judgement day will take care of the rest. And for that I feel sorry for those individuals. Can you imagine if everyone on earth loved God and Christ as much as they love us? None of this would be happening and the United States would be the strongest and most loving country in the world. Can you imagine what the powers to be could get done while serving God and following his word. Just imagine. This whole situation is sad when you really think about it. Evil can only take control if you allow it and stray away from the word of God.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl I am a Big Fan and will be praying for both you and Trump! God wont take us out of the fire - He gives us the strength to go through it and be better for it!
This is a project? A putty knife and an angle grinder? Please save me from
No man, this is awesome. Mors Kochanski made knives kind of like this for his students.
American puukko!
Ruined a good putty knife.
Putty knives are made of dangerous material, should not be ground. That's what pops said. You don't appear to have a mask on. You are dangerous.
What is the dangerous material in a putty knife that should not be ground? My putty knives are too thin and flexible for a bush knife. I’d want a thicker more rigid spine. I make them from files and saw blades.
Emergency cutting device/fun project.
I don't watch or support Canterbury in any way. Not only is he a known lier, he is a shady business practitioner and steals othwr people's ideas in order to make money off of them and he spreads false information about his subject matter. He is auite knowledgeable but I can not support such a shady sheister.
After my mentor Gundog 5, I've learned most of what I know about firemaking and bushcraft from him. I'll always appreciate him for that. By your own self righteous standards, YOU... and indeed I are also liars and shady shysters.
But that’s soft cheap steal.
Emergency knife. Not so soft and cheap. See 2 videos later where I made a bow drill with it.
