I was there when it was being built. Everyone hated it. It cut the beautiful campus in half. It looked cheap and didn't fit with the other buildings. I remember the death of the student.
I remember when it was built I thought it wasn’t finished on the outside. I thought they would put a covering over the cement. I worked in the Dean’s office of Liberal Arts when I was in grad school. I didn’t like it at first, but changed my mind. I remember all the temporary buildings that were there before Faner was built.
Hi Gary! We just did a Saluki Sleuths episode on the tunnels and asked this question. The short answer is that no, the tunnels are not an official SIU fallout shelter but it's been suggested in the past (the '60s) by university staff that the tunnels would be a very safe place in the event of a bombing or nuclear attack due to the concrete protection.
@@SalukiAlumni In 1975/6 I lived in Brown Hall, I remember reading in the DE a year or so later that they had crackers and emergency food down in the tunnels that was being donated to the local farmers for their livestock. Funny how some things stick in your head. Thanks for this series. I practically lived in the student center studying on the fourth floor.
I usted 2 sneak into into it when the library closed at 12d and would study until 2 or 3 am I had the place to myself along with my 1 or 2 other people with me we sometimes smoked weed before we left Sometimes my girlfriend and I would walk all over the place and never got lost we did have some classrooms that we liiked where we did things that college kids do BTW we got in because 1 of the doors was not secure we did nor break in
I was dating Michael when he was killed. I'm disappointed that there isn't a plaque with his name.

Interesting. Attended SIU in the early ‘70s. I remember the crane accident.
Very sad situation
I do too.
Gary Schmitz, class of 1980. I would like to talk about the tunnel system on campus. Was it used as fallout shelter as well as steam?

How about Thompson Point
Was finished during my days at SIU, stayed out of it for the most part.
You are one of the lucky ones! ;)
I hated Faner Hall.. That's the worst building on campus
It is definitely a tough one to navigate!

The garden needs to be better maintained.
I attended SIU from 1/72 - 5/75 and watched Faner being built. I hated it! So ugly.
Haha! Many would agree with you Ann!
I know it needs a power wash!
That might be nice!
