    The cycle of spending 20 hours finding mods, installing them and then planning a play through of Skyrim just to quit after around 10 hours of gameplay is undefeated lol

    If I could get some of the kind of 'live another life' type story mods for Cyberpunk 2077, letting me start with another narrative and ignore the whole Silverhand storyline in favor of new narratives, I would probably go back and play Cyberpunk 2077 a lot more than I do. Skyrim's modding community helped that game last SO much longer than it would have out of the box.

      And how Skyrims mod community was a continuation from Morrowind and Oblivions mods. It’s possible that there will never be another game as heavily modded as Skyrim, or the Bethesda modding community.

      Calling Cyberpunk a bad game is very much not true, but all the flak it got at launch was very much deserved, but right now the game is actually really good and I can recommend it, but weather the full price is worth it or not is up for interpretation as we all know people see value through different lenses.

    > ARPGs are a very relaxing genre to play
    I had the same idea, bought Grim Dawn to chill after work which was quite stressful at the time. What was chill at first quickly turned into a tryhard hobby. Didn't even notice how I hit 1500 hours and several endgame-successful homebrew builds.

      New Vegas is better.
      Also, Fallout 4's world is bland and unengaging compared to virtually every other open world sandbox.
      Bethesda is woefully mediocre as a game developer and their games are way overhyped

    • @guthrien

      I disagree completely about the world, but I haven't played out of the box Fallout in years so maybe some of the mods are making the world better. Exploration is really good in that game. My personal favorite mod I've found is Horizon overhaul, it makes the survival part of the game 'make sense'.

    These top-down, isometric RPGS are always good for replayability; they aren't heavy on downtime due to cutscenes are chasing quests across a big open world, they don't get bogged down in dialogue and cutscenes, you never have to remember where you are in the story or what you planned to do when you come back after months away. There are plenty of games that I don;t have time to play because I play in bursts, a few hours at a time across the occasional weekend. These games would probably be amazing if I could ever get anywhere, but the Gods of Wars, Witchers, and other narrative driven RPGs require me to pretty much start over and relearn every time I wanna sit down for a weekend. Action RPGs are easy to pick back up quickly and put down just as easily

    DOS:2 is how I discovered this channel. Got the game on sale and was looking for more info.
    I still play Diablo 2, in the form of D2R which just looks so good while giving me all the nostalgia. I played it first (and got addicted to it first) pre-LoD, even. No runewords...How did I ever manage?
    I also still play Grim Dawn, as I think it's the best overall top down ARPG.
    What Remains of Edith Finch is a "walking sim" I come back to and playthrough once a year or two. It's just so good.
    I still replay several JRPG's from the 16 bit console era (FF6, Phantasy Star 4, Chrono Trigger, etc.) and a few others, like Super Metroid, A link to the Past, Super Mario World, etc. again...Because of nostalgia, and they still hold up.

    Neverwinter Nights 2. it's everything to love about fantasy and d&d. It's like "what does it mean to be a hero? and lets you answer that. Also, just how well every character starts as a well established trope (dwarf fighter who likes fighting and drinking etc), but then gets a twist in their arc to make them feel unique with lots of personality is such a good mix of comfortable familiarity with good personality that makes it feel good to come back time and again.

    Skyrim was the first game I ever 100% completed for the Xbox 360 back when it came out and I still to this day come back to it multiple times a year. 11 years later and no game has been able to capture me the same since. Admittedly, mods have helped a ton with keeping the experience fresh, and things like wabbajack modlists open up a whole new world of modding where you don't have to spend dozens of hours modding before you get a stable experience the way you want it and can actually play.

  • @MrWhybull
    @MrWhybull 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve played dozens, if not hundreds, of games since I started gaming in the 80’s. To this day, I still go back to Asheron’s Call. It had so much of what people crave in modern games. The massive open world, things to find and explore everywhere, loot to collect, puzzles to solve, lore to uncover, rumors to chase down, and the list goes on. It is not without fault and it’s old, but I never did find anything that could replace it or the experiences it contained.

  • @Perfidion

    Skyrim SE and Fallout 4 are my gaming crack. Particularly Skyrim. I've dumped over 2000 hours into that game, and I regret none of it. Unlike the more involved and complex CRPGs like Pillars of Eternity, or the Kingmaker titles, Skyrim lets you put your brain in a drawer for a couple of hours while you just run around and kill things. And that's exactly what you want after a long day at work. I save the more cerebral games for the weekend.

    Cyberpunk is amazing. 1.5 made it the game it should have been at launch. I'm on my 4th playthrough and just can't get enough of its world and exploration. It's my new Skyrim, basically.

    • @7dayspking
      @7dayspking 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely nowhere near the game it promised in the 2018 trailer with 1.5 and the 2019-2020 marketing, not even close. The complex and open ended Fallout 1-2 Esque quest design where quests can be completed in many ways leading to many outcomes isn't there. The deeply involved dialogues are massively scaled back. The advanced traversal like wall running and stuff isn't there. It's not even close to what was promised and it'd need several years of further development to be because it'd require a complete and outright overhaul of every single dialogue, quest, scene and location in the entire game.

    • @rickeyboy42
      @rickeyboy42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@7dayspking "It'd require a complete and outright overhaul" absolutely, because you're describing an entirely different game. They definitely made a mistake showing an earlier version of the game when their feature list wasn't nailed down, but nothing of the above was "promised" to you. I've worked in game development for 15 years now... I've even worked on a couple of games featured on this channel. I understand the development process and it's completely normal for features to end up on the cutting board before release. You saw some early footage of the game and you imagined this version of the game that doesn't actually exist. That's on them for lack of clarity, absolutely, but also that's on you for thinking you have any idea what this game SHOULD have been. Never judge a game based on unreleased footage. ALWAYS judge the final product only. You are not owed anything.

    • @7dayspking
      @7dayspking 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rickeyboy42 They advertises this entirely different game, Don't forget that. You tried to suggest the 1.5 update makes Cyberpunk the game they advertised but you know damn well it doesn't.
      They advertised the game with that demo. What you market is what is expected. They never at any point before release came out and admitted the game was no longer anything like what was advertised.
      Mate, I don't make purchases based on 'pre release' hype. I didn't even buy Cyberpunk! But CDP (The publisher) absolutely deserve everything they've got and a handful of them should rightfully be sitting in a cell right now for the lies and lack of clarity given both to customers AND investors.

    The fact that I enjoy playing Cyberpunk 2077 as much as I do is pretty wild. I'm pretty old and I distinctly remember cracking open the Cyberpunk 2020 rule book back in the day with my RPG group, reading that first paragraph (the one you can find as a bit of lore in the computer game) and noping out super fast. I found it overly pretentious and that feeling came rushing back when I found it in the game and read it again (I hadn't thought about it in 40 years). I didn't realize at the time that I bought it that the game was based on that RPG I so despised years ago. But I waited until 1.6 when the reviews became more positive and gave it a try. I always find myself going back to Final Fantasy 12. I have probably put about 1,000 hours into the original PS2 version alone. Once I got into emulation and I found English patches for the Japanese released version with additional content, I probably ended up putting in another 400-500 just with the international zodiac job system. And now with the remaster it's just a blast going in and playing that game with a bit of a fresh coat of paint with some minor changes done. I think I in total of probably put about 2,000 hours into the game as a whole throughout some of its various versions, self imposed challenges, and a randomizer mod for the remastered version of the game.

    For me, I can never escape Football Manager, Stellaris, XCom2, the Pathfinder games, or Battletech.

    1) Warhammer Total War series
    2) Xenonauts (X-Com)
    3) 7 Days to Die
    4) Axis & Allies (because it's so hard to find time and people for in-person)
    5) Grim Dawn (ARPG)
    6) Warlock 2

    Privateer 1 - yes the old space game from Origin.
    Wolfenstein New Order and Old Blood, just when I want to get in a little shoot em up, sometimes on easy and sometimes on hard.
    Age of Empires II (2013)
    Kingdom Come Deliverance
    Kerbal Space Program
    Last but not least - Everquest. Still playing it after all these years.
    That's about it

    I wish I still had motivation to play games. I still find them to be as fun as I always used to but now whenever I start a game up I just lose all motivation and end up just closing the game after a few minutes. Most days I do nothing with my free time beyond sitting down, don't even watch tv or movies anymore. I think my brain is just burned out on having "fun".

  • @blindhamsterman1

    fun list to read.
    For me the games I come back to again and again are:
    Baldurs Gates (even dragonspear since its release, but it used to be something of a yearly tradition to play through the originals, eventually using the old BGT mod when that was made.
    Mass Effects (though i played andromeda just once)
    Elder Scrolls 3 and 5 (I love morrowinds vibes and with mods it looks quite pretty, mechanics got a bit dated, I love skyrim but miss the RPG elements, cant wait for skywind)
    XCOM (i think 2 was overall a better game, but I love 1)
    Witcher series (All 3, I loved them all for their own reasons, though I ususally use "rise of the white wolf" for the 1st one now)
    As I've gotten older and have a family and job etc, I no longer really get to play games much so playing anything more than once is a luxury I rarely have. I'll absolutely go back to cyberpunk at some point, I loved it, even if it wasn't what was promised, even if there were issues, I still loved it.

    Don't you struggle remembering how the games were like every time you go back to them after certain amount of time? Because I do, I usually need up to 30 minutes to remember the controls and the basic strategy, unless it's a simple platformer or something like that.

    XCOM 2 Long War of the Chosen - the mod has entered 1.0 version on Steam Workshop - I wonder if Mort would like to try it out, probably not 100% but just for initial impressions.
    Quality of life mods like Overwatch/Evac All should still work, and if you're tired of the timed stealth/missions the Resistance Ring facility lets you pick the "Infiltrate" reaper order so timers don't start until you are spotted - under Advanced Options for the game difficulty you can also enable Time Turner so any mission timers are doubled. Ironman to prevent save scumming :D

    Even now in 2024, nothing beats TES and Fallout. Most of their entries would never be considered great rpgs, by me, but they're good enough in that regard and excel in gameplay and exploration. They aren't the best, but they feel like home. And home is the best.

    I play POE2 at least once a year since its release. I can't understand the sales failure of this game, in my opinion, it is superior to the first one in everything. Unfortunately, POE3 is not in Obisidian's plans and that is very sad.

    • @ovidiudiumea4012
      @ovidiudiumea4012 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I can't speak to POE2, but I tried POE1 and I couldn't really engage with the combat. The real-time with pause combat isn't my cup of tea. I had the same issue with Tyranny.
      I also felt the fantasy world felt a little bit generic with POE1, like they went the 'safe' route. Tyranny was better in that respect.
      That said, I might give POE another shot one day. Have to finish Pathfinder first. Which might be difficult as I'm having fun with Skyrim at the moment. Ugh.

    I don't actively go for 100%s, these are just a few games I find myself continually or perennially playing over the years.
    I come back to Skyrim occasionally, but never stay too long with it simply because I don't like its systems and design all that much compared to its predecessors. I'm more likely to go back to Oblivion, Morrowind or even Daggerfall.
    Divinity: Original Sin 2, whether to play it solo or co-op.
    The Sims 3 is probably my most played game of all time, though I think I've finally ran out of things to do in it. 9 years of playing it ain't bad though.
    Fallout and Arx Fatalis aren't similar games, but I lump them into the same category of 'highly-atmospheric RPGs that don't overstay their welcome and which I enjoy returning to every few years'
    Legend of Grimrock 2, even if by now I can remember a fair chunk of the puzzles there's always a secret or two I've never seen- or simply forgotten about- and there's a good variety of potential party compositions so it's another one I return to. It helps that there's a respectable handful of full-length player-made dungeons for it as well.
    And traditional roguelikes, Caves of Qud and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup in particular with an honorable mention for Tales of May'Eyal

    I started playing Cyberpunk again after the Anime came out, and hearing they patched it a lot. Is it the game that was promised to us? Or at least what Impression they gave us it would be? No, but after getting over that and knowing it's a not a Skyrim meets Cyberpunk, I quite enjoy it now. I do hope that if they make another Cyberpunk game, that they truly go the Skyrim route, open world and do what ever you like, join different factions that actually are factions and not just subquests. I wanted to be a corpo rat but you really can't be one beside the intro of the game, that is it. I want to work my way up the corporate chain, do shaddy stuff or become a corpo enforcer. I want to be able to join the police. I want to be able to just leave the main story for what it is and have great adventures as the faction I have chosen to join, like in Oblivion were I completely ditched the main story and just became a mage, working my way up the mage guild. Or like in Fallout New Vegas were I joined the rangers and played the game as a Ranger instead of the main story.
    Still, I have began to enjoy the game for what it is and don't regret my purchase anymore.
